Outboard Tune - up?
Does anyone have experience with Lewis Marine off I-70, St. Charles? Good or bad experience? The reason I ask, is I have my boat in for tune-up, impeller replacement, and for them to look at my controls. I am just trying to get a feel on what to expect. I have talked to them several times, and I am not getting a warm and fussy feeling. Almost as if the guy doesn't like to be bothered, he'll call when he's ready or something. I just want to get an idea of the $$ involved, but he couldn't give me a ballpark. Not a big deal, but you'd think they'd have some idea, or give a brief summary of what was done.

I would think they would at least have an idea how much the impeller plus install would cost. heck, there aughta be set book times and costs for something like that. now, I have no marine mechanic experience, so I might be way off base. but in the automotive world there is a set time for everything on a car or truck. from engine repair to removing a seat to replacing a fender or bumper and everything in between. there is almost always a set time.
so what I would do is call a few other marine shops and ask them what they would charge for the same work. maybe try to get a feel for how their time is set.

Changing the impeller takes about 15 minutes so it shouldnt cost much.

Hey smokin this would of been a good question BEFORE you took your boat to them. lol. All joking Aside boat marinas usually are not cheap no matter what they do. Seems like they always run in to trouble! (of course they do) the tune up will be the most $. U could of done the rest your self. If u get online they have allot of sites that show you how to adjust your cables. As far as the impeller goes it all comes in a kit when u buy it. Not hard at all. Just getting the water tubes aligned back right can be a trick some times. Hope they do you right so u can get back on the water. I'm sure you will let us know.

Unfortunately as mentioned, they have my wallet now!
But, I am hoping they'll prove me wrong and show evidence of each charge - labor, and sound 'fairly' reasonable in their repair / final $$.
I did do most of the tune up myself, filters, spark plugs, oil change, lower unit lube, etc.... Basically, I told them to check the controls, listen to the idle and valves, and if need adjust to specs. Also, I had them check the oil level, and adjust spark plugs to manufacturer specs - if needed. AND to change the impeller (kit). He did tell me yesterday nothing major was found wrong, but that they were trying to get the idle set right. After 178 hours on the Yam F150 '09, and no problems (knock on wood), I figured it was time to take it in after the cables, valves and engine finished stretching and settled in for a lookie.
Riddle (Scott), yes it would of been a question to post beforehand!
But, it was sort of an impulsive decision to do it, and Lewis is closest. We'll see, I hope they make me happy!!
I am guessing, Impeller, controls, possibly a valve adjustment, $350 - $600. What do you think? 3-4 hours labor, plus parts - if needed. I will post and let everyone know the damage!

Smokin, I've had em work on all three of my motors (150hp & 40hp Yamaha and a 40hp Evin) and had good experience on all three. One time they coulda sold me a whole new gas tank, but found a used pick-up tube and did save me some bucks. I deal with Greg Lewis in the shop. Once they had the problem fixed by the time I got home...bout 15 minutes away.
On the flip side, a bud of mine took a 15hp Mercury which wasn't pumping gas and took 6 weeks, burnt up 3 impellers in testing...don't know how...a head gasket, carburater, and tried to charge him an excessive amount (don't remember exactly), he objected and they did cut the final bill down by 1/3 or 1/2. The same dude had taken the same 10 yr old motor to them previously for a gas problem and they replaced the carburator under warranty and didn't charge a penny. Guess they coulda charged him and not said anything bout the recall.
But, ya know the definition of BOAT=Break Out Another Thousand.
Let us know of your experience and hope it works out.

Even Yammies need tweeking once in a while and an impeller every other year! I do believe they work on quite a few Yamahas.

sience it is a 4 stroke engine that is a whole difrent ballpark than a 2 stroke when it comes to a "check over". for them to check and adjust the valves and such , and the timming belts on any 4 stroke motor are only good for 200 hours, so dont be surprised if they charge you for putting one of thoes on. an impeller replacement alone will be arround $200. and whatever you meen by telling them to "check the controls" could be interpreted difrently by them.
Lewis marine tecks know their stuf and have been in business a long time and are growing and growing not by doing people wrong,
your bill will be more than you think it should be, but thats the way it is with these new 4 stroke engings, much more moving parts going on in there and for the price of the smooth quiet power on the water sure hits the wallet at the shop
