I personally do my Flathead fishing at night and Ive found that the head of holes up in the swiftest water I can hold my bait is where most of my fish come from. I have one spot where the water flows through an area where there are huge cement slabs in the water just before dropping into a major deep hole. We slip up to the edge and fish our big live baits like flippin a jig bass fishing. We fish our baits weightless with a J hook. The water is only a couple feet deep but we pull our baits along these rocks and flats up to 25 pounds have been up in the shallows feeding and grab our baits. Makes for some super fun fishing. This spot has consistently produced fish this way. So to answer your question about how shallow they will go, they will go as shallow as the food is as long as there is deep water close by, fish it! and if you have any areas like i mentioned try Flippin for flatties but hang on to your rod they make a nasty run when you set the hook on them in shallows like that. BTW we discovered this spot cause we saw a nice flathead laying behind one of these big rocks in our flashlight as we were walking across the rocks one night. We only flip this spot now we dont even fish the hole anymore.

the wabash is about the only place i fish anymore so i know exactly what kind of river conditions you are describing
the previous post is rite on!!! I do not fish water deeper than 8 or 9ft but with cheese bait dont come across any flats but i can imagine. I love the look on a newbies face when he lays into a 4 or 5 pound blue in shallow fast water. Always disappointed when the get it in to the boat. definitly keep ahold of those rods havnt lost one yet but i dont push my look the will suck them rite out of the boat
