Default Thinking about switching gear this year

Was tossing the thought around of using ultra-light gear (rod & reel and line) to catch channel cats this year. Seems it would be a lot fun and more of a challenge. What do yall think?

I have one pole that is light action,I always put bait on it and throw it out bank side of the Rivers. It's exciting when you get a 10 lb Cat on it. Fighting it feels like it's a monster.I have 12 lb test on it. Just hope I never hook onto a big one with it.

Usually carry a couple of small setups to play around with while I am waiting for the real action.

    Cane Pole Action!

Remember seeing them back in the day...

See some long mofo's on this river every once in a while by some older guys.

Spring time with a lot of rain. Water will rise into the woods. Before I sold boat. We use to chum a couple holes in the trees in about 6-8 foot of water. Catfish Charlie on a treble hook with a 8 to 12 foot cane pole. Would take 2-3 hours or so for 3 of us to catch our limit in nice size eating channels. That is 75 eating size fish. Not counting the throw backs.

Come home, clean fish, have a fish fry.
Sometimes use a 6 foot R&R with 12 pound line. Lots of fun but cane pole was more practical for that kind of fishing.

Also fun trolling into coves catching bream on light gear. Did that all the time too. Chilling out on the lake while waiting to check our trot lines.

    Walt,

Nothing wrong with trying to get a little more fight out of a fish. I'm not going the ultralight route, but I'm downsizing my gear a little bit to get some more enjoyment out of some of the smaller fish I catch, but will still have enough in the tank to nail a brute if I have to (hopefully ). I think alot of people over-equip themselves when catfishing just in case that once in a lifetime monster hits, but end up missing the fun on all the fish they catch in between, IMO.
