Alligator gar rig?
does anybody have a rig suggestion, I haven't fished for alligator/longnose gar since I was a kid. I will be fishing from the bank on narrow muddy rivers. I will be using saltwater spinning outfits.
thanks

When I was stationed in Savannah I used to go catfishing alot and found thatwhen ever I rigged my sinker on the bottom with my hook above it about 18 to 24 inches with any ole type of cut bait. I always caught more gar than cats. Any where from 24 to 52 inches long. So start with that unless someone comes on here with better advise

use a steel leader, bout 10 lbs lest breaking strengh, less than your main line.place a 6/0 to 8/0 trebil hook on one end and a 3/0 to 4/0 swivel on the other.use a large pencil shaped bobber and fish half way to the bottom.let fish mouth the bait 3 or 4 min more if fishing real large baits.set hook hard 3 or 4 times but not hard enough to break line.when and if ya get to boat or bank cut leader and release dont kill such a magnificent animal.make new leader and repeat.by the way dont use stainless wire or hooks they take to long for fish to get rid of.

I know what not to use
Fishing last summer at Lake Allatoona I threw out a minnow on a 12 lb line, light action bass pole,no sinker no leader just hook and minnow,Big gar took it and ran,got it to the bank and it took off again, snapped my pole mid ways and broke the line.Gar was about 4 ft long.

Line size will depend on size of the fish, some folks make rope flies and 12 lb line, thats small ones. Gar can live outa water for a long time while ya untangle that rope from their mouth. Not sure a hook is needed, they got a pretty boney mouth.
