I like a rod with a tip on the soft side .The uglystick 1100 CAL 7ft med action is a good channel cat rod ,soft tip with plenty of backbone deeper into the rod.It also has 7 guides plus tip ,i personally dont like a rod that skimps on the number of guides. There should be a spinning equivelent to this rod ,i don't know what the nomenclature is.

I'd go with a 6-8' medium, no more than medium heavy. I have caught pretty good size channels over that size with a 7' light action rod. Its a lot of fun and more sensitive. If ya just want to get em in quick, use a heavier rod. Channels that size could be caught on ultra light gear, just takes longer.

For channels I use both medium & med/hvy action rods. I prefer the med/hvy because of the lake I fish the most, I catch the odd hybrid striper on liver. I need the xtra backbone for those beasts.

all right guys i bought two ugly stiks 7ft med action spinning. hope they will be good enuf. i have a large plethera of different rods. i have tons of ultra light rods but, most of my heavier stuff lives at my beach house. i was trying to get myself some new stuff that all feels the same hopefully this does it. i think these should be all around good rods for the type of fishing i have here and, hopefuly they will be able to handle the ocasional rock fish out of the baltimore harbor. hope they aint to long for the lil boat i guess time will tell. yall think i did allright or what?

Enjoy your rods and good fishing!!!
For channel cats a nice composite rod with a flexible tip that still has some 'bone is the ticket, I think. I like composite rods med to med hvy, maybe 7-8 ft. Ugly sticks are good rods, people have caught a ton of catfish using those. The white ones, black ones, tiger rods.
I have a Tiger Lite heavy (not really that heavy) spinning rod I use for flatheads and channels. I use a couple spinning setups and a couple baitcasting for both channel and flatheads. A couple composite rods, one graphite, one glass.
For a long time, I used light to medium spinning gear for channel cats and 10# test line. That's a lot of fun, but if you're finding bigger fish near heavy cover I'd go no less than 14# test.
