set up for channels

i was looking to buy 2 new rods. i was considering cabellas whuppin stiks. i fish for channels only between the size of about a pound to five pounds. i was wondering if i should get the heavy action spinning or the med heavy spinning? i would like to be able to feel the fish, but i would also like to use the rods for other fish as well. such as rockfish, carp etc. what would you recomend? i have never used these rods before have heard alot of good things as well as some bad things about them, but for the price you aint out a whole lot if you dont like them.

Channels that small I would probably use a light med heavy or maybe a medium action rod. Sometimes channels can really slam bait then others they have a soft mouth and nibbles are the norm. The heavier the rod the harder they are to catch when they are letting go just as soon as they feel any resistance. I love using soft rods and circles and really letting them load up the rod before starting to reel on them.

I would go with a Medium action rod. 7'.0 to 7'9" range. I would recommend the BP Catmaxx M action rod. But I would also recommend the Ugly Stick Catfish rod, or try looking into the new Whisker Whip Rods. I think any of these three rods would serve you well.. Good luck

Do yourself a favor and steer clear of those Whuppin sticks. Spend the extra and get the White Catfish series Ugly Sticks.

I for one stay away from overkill. I have used 7' medium action rods and spinning reels exclusively for the past 30 plus years for all my cat and carp, sturgeon fishing. All my other species fishing (walleye, bass, panfish) incorperates use of light power spinning gear. It has worked extremely well for my purposes and see no need for anything more expensive or cumbersome for any of the purposes I use them for. I have even caught several muskies in the 10# range on light gear and 6# line while fishing for bass or walleye, as well as untold bass on 4# line while panfishing. Use what you need for equipment, overkill not needed.
