WD-40 Facts & Myths | WD-40 Ingredients
Here's an interesting link to WD 40's web site.
Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer has fish oil in it. But I wouldn't use it for bait either. I'll stick with prey fish.

I've been on other fishing sites where bass fishermen swear by it spraying WD40 on their crankbaits saying it increase hookups. I always thought it contained Menhadden fish oil? The bass fishermen did note that it will damage and eat up line real fast so if anyone wants to try it they might want to take note.

might as well just dip your bait in a can of gas before tossing it out, has about the same effect on the water system.

Isn't that pretty much what 2-stroke jet skis do? They dump an average of 4 gallons of unburned gas and oil every hour they run on the lake. So if someone did want to squirt WD40 on their bait the gas dispersed from that is nothing compared to what jetskiers and also boaters do.

this may be true, I have never heard of that before, would be interested in knowing where that info can be found, but anyway like momma used to say if everybody else is jumping off a bridge then are you gonna jump too? or look at it this way, just cause alot of dirtbags throw all there trash and litter on the ground at the lake does that make it okay for everyone to do it? Caring for our lakes and rivers is a tough job, and if we all start thinking that just because someone else does something it is alright to do it too, well then all is lost already.

Its common knowledge that 2 stroke engines dump gas, 4 strokes do too though just not as much. I didn't say I was going to use WD40. I just find it funny people get irked up over a little WD40 yet they have no problems with the gas dumping engines and these are also same people who use lead sinkers without a second thought. I wonder if everyone is using biodegradable fishing line now that it is available? I care about the waterways too and pick up after myself when I fish, but I also know WD40 users, what few there are, are not a major culprit when it comes to water pollution. Here's a few articles on 2 stroke engines-

I really don't care if people use WD40 on their bait or lure.I just simply let the original poster know that it does'nt contain ANY fish oil.I use 2 cycle motors, drink from plastic bottles, and throw my aluminum cans in the garbage...I'm gonna leave a big ass carbon footprint!!!I don't think a little WD40 will hurt the lakes or Rivers, but it contains no fish oils...

W-D 40 vs MOONSHINE
I've tried the w-d 40 thing once.. I caught 2 more fish than my pardner, using same bait less w-d 40....
No fish oil in it, but I had to try it. LOL.... I done tried dancing on 1 foot and
singing my fishy-fishy song... But I don't get halfway soused and fish together anymore either..
Old man I fished with as a kid said to get the fish to bite better, you needed some " SHINE " ... Take a
swallow then spit a little on your bait... Wouldn't let me have a drink then, afraid my daddy
would kill em.. LOL
I have chummed in springtime, it's about the only time it works here.
Now I just use good bait, live bream, and good fishing gear, seems to work... When things get too slow sometimes I will lean over the side and make a threat to the fish- - - I tell-um " DON'T MAKE ME COME DOWN THERE !!!!! It's going to turn ugly !!!!!!! .. Works about as good as W-D 40 & Moonshine. LMBO
GOD bless j.

I know this is an old thread but it got me to rememberin some things from when I was learning to fish with my daddy.
Back in the late 70's some of the bait shops had just started selling a magic spray that was guaranteed to help you catch fish. You betcha we got a bottle and tried it out. The first thing my dad said was "that smells like WD40."
We played with it a little and it DID smell just like WD. Spray it on your finger and it felt just like WD. Spray it on the water and rainbows were everywhere, just like WD.
We were fishing for crappie back then and I don't know if we ever actually caught more fish using it than if we had not used it. After that bottle ran out we refilled it with WD and used it for the rest of the year.
I had forgotten all about using that on bait.
