From spring til fall I always keep a good supply of crawlers on hand. I also fish walleye, white bass and other species so I can go through a lot. I use a small foam cooler from walmart, about $2 and use Magic brand bedding. A 3 gallon cooler filled halfway with bedding can maintain 100 crawlers with room to spare. Magic bedding has food already in it, but you can also supliment it with corn meal. I change the bedding about once a month and restock about as often. I just keep the cooler, covered with the lid, in a cool corner of the garage. I also keep a 2# weight on the lid. Not to keep things out, but to keep the crawlers from crawling out.
Dont know about meal worms. Around here the big thing is the larve that lives in golden rod galls. A very popular bait for ice fishingbluegill and crappie. Lots of people hit the roadsides and fields collecting the galls (which are plenty cause goldenrod are a nuscince here) and store them in a spare fridge until winter. They stay dormant in the gall until you take them out. I know guys that will collect 400-500 in the fall to last them the ice season. They also work good in open water fishing for panfish under a bobber.
