steering cable swap

I have pity on anybody tryint to do this. If you don't have some kind of mechanical aptitude it's gonna' suck!! I had to take my motor loose and pivot it to get the right angle to get the shaft to come out of the motor and through the hole in the floor without hanging on anything and practically tear the whole boat apart to get to it. I will probably have about 7-8 hours in this job by the time I get done with it. It can be done, but it is not fun. I had to fight mine the whole way out of the boat...no where to find one at......blah!!!

What I would have done.
Cut that sucker out in pieces and go back with hydraulic.

I thought about doing that, but that's a bit overkill on a 'lil 50 hp Merc on a 17' boat, so I'll just go back with what came out of it. Nobody stocks marine parts anywhere, had to order that darn thing.....blah!

Can you tell me how to get my steering cable off of the motor. ?

Heres what I have .. \

100 horse Johnson with rack steerring .. I have removed the motor from the boat with the cable still connected .. I have disconnected the linkage and when I try to pull the cable shaft out of the steering cylinder it is all gummed up and hard to pull out. When I do get it to move some ( about 4-5 inches ) it just stops dead .. won't come out any further for anything .. it will go back in just wont come the rest of the way out .. any thoughts on what im missing

Mine is the rack system too. Mine had a plastic nut near the swingarm going to the motor and a metal nut holding it to the motor mounting plate. I took both of those off and it slid out of the motor mount. I had to kind of grab it with pliers and pull it because it was so tight going through the hole in the splashpan.
