Homemade bait traps?
I'm not sure if theres already a thread on this or not? But I was wondering if anyone has some homemade bait traps for perch, minnows, crayfish *etc* that they have came up with? Aside from the 2liter soda bottle trick. I usually have to comb the banks with a small rod and catch them on a hook, in a stream near me that has a lot of active bait fish. However, the process gets tedious.

I use traps alot in the summertime. There are some really great articles on them in the member library.

3-4 years ago
I remember reading about a trap system 3-4 years ago, but cannot remember it exactly. Around here, people use to make wooden fish traps called baskets. They were round (like a tube) or flat (like a long thin box) and made of oak slats about 2"x1/4" x 6'. Fingers of tapered wood were placed in one end to form a funnel shape so that the fish could push in, but not go back. A slide out door was placed at the other end to remove the fish. Two bracing rings were placed at 2' and 4' to keep things in shape as well as each end. The sides were the slats with a gap of 1/4 to 1" depending on the size you were seeking. Flathead baskets were a bit larger (perhaps 18" diameter). This could be scaled down I suppose for bait fish.
