Hi Corey welcome to the USCA the answer to your question I use the head I hook it thru the eyes socket I also kinda step on it to get the juices flowing then I scrape the scales on both sides and hook in the top near the backbone in the thick meat leaving the entrails intact sometimes I'm able to get 2 to 3 PC's out of each bait fish I cut them in 1" strips or chunks sometimes I fillet them and cut those in chunks depends on the size of them hope this helps
FISH-MORE & DO-LITTLE ............. Nihil sine Deo
Head with the gut pocket attached is my favorite piece of 'gill. I hook thru the eye's with J hooks and If I am using a big circle hook, then I usually go in thru the "roof" of the mouth and out just behind the upper lip. My second favorite is a partially scaled fillet. I usually don't have to mess with cutting fins off. If it's a small 'gill I will cut it in two at the base of the tail, toss the tail away, split the belly open, and squish it a little to get the juices flowing. And if that doesn't work, small strips cut from the side fillets do pretty good sometimes.
In dog beers, I've only had 3.

If I'm going for flatheads I'll only use J hooks though, I'm to scared to use a circle for flatheads.

I like the King Kahles,, cut or swimmers.. They've worked well for me,, I hook heads with gut pocket if possible through the eyes, or in front of the dorsal fin sometimes ...in heavier current. If I'm using filets,, then I scale them.. usually carp
Gama 8/0 circles. I like the head hooked through the eyes. I scale em sometimes but not always. Just wanna make sure you leave plenty of gap so that the bait doesnt prevent the fish from being hooked. Only hook em about 1/4 deep or so. Also make sure the point is free of scales.
Well, looks like you boys do it just right by me!Thats the way ole grandpappy did it!
Must be as fresh as possible from the same body of water!!! Cut in three parts; Head section; fillet in half down the spine with the tail remaining on one half. Fish all three at the same time and then after I catch one, rebait with the same section from another Bluegill. Presentation is everything but I never land a Blue/Channel/or Flathead with the same presentation twice. And yeah one more thing...Leave the hook point exposed!!! They smell/feel and do not react to the hook until it is to late.
cut bluegill is great but if you ever have any dead goldfish after flathead fishing cut those up there really bloody, and like bluegills the head with gut pocket is my favorite part to use!
I love using bluegill for channels. I usually hook the head section in the lips, hooking under what i call the chin and try to get the hook out between the nostrils. This leaves tons of the hook exposed while maintaining a good hook in the bait so you dont lose it while casting. The rest of the gill i cut into sections and put the hook near the backbone seems to hold really well there also. GO FISH!
