Sounds like you figured it out. A little heavier setup like what you bought will be more enjoyable when you hook into something 10+ lbs. Hope you keep catchin' them.

pretty much. only thing i dont understand is the function of the leader line.
what ive been doing is just using some of the same line on the other end of the barrel swivel. i dont really get what having a heavier line as the leader would do? also, if the leader line is heavier than what the maximum line printed on the rod could the bust it?

leader
i am not sure but i like to think that the swivel allows the cat fish to roll like they always do,with out twisting or breaking your line , the heavier leader simply keeps the bait from tangeling up due to a floppy leader and the extra heavy line also helps keep the teeth of a fish from busting the line and might offer a lil more strength and the heavy leader can brush up against rock with a fish on with out being an automatic line break where your 10-12lb line will prolly snap due to the weight of the fish and the line being so light.
this part could be a myth but i like to think that if i have my drag set loose enough and play the fish , i belive that the 30lb leader allows me to bring in a over sized fish where with weak line , it offen snaps just by settin the hook with a light line set up <--- [imo] gl to ya and use what you like , also if your fishing a resavior odds are it was river fed at one time and there are some BIG land locked cats in there and i hope you hook one LOL gl

It makes it so your line doesn't get trashed when they're rolling around and running through cover, since it's thicker it'll stand up to more abuse than smaller line letting you catch the bigger fish. I've used 15 lb mono as a leader before and it gets worthless after 2 or 3 decent fish. I use 30 now. You won't break your rod, that's what the drag is for. The line printed is just a recommendation, not a must use thing. Lots of people use 65-100 lb braid on rods rated 15-25 lb without a problem, unless they forget how heavy the rod is and lock down the drag.

thanks to both of you, thats kind of what i thought it would do. i just want sure if it would bust the rod by having a heavier leader on there. but this rod is pretty thick anyway.
but that leaves me with one more question, isnt a thicker leader line easier for the fish to see and maybe could cause him not to go near my bait?

Some fish are leader shy, but never met a catfish that cared. If you have the bait they want, they're gonna slam it and keep on going til you stick a hook in them.

BINGO!!!!! cats don't care correction , the cats i catch don't care LOL and i am useing 30-50lb big game as leader, no problems with fish being leader shy if you feel that its a problem for you then try some other color leader but if the leader is clear colored will the fish see it ???? also if you got the money some power pro or shakespear ugly braid <-- cheaper if you can find it , these are a good investment when targeting the big boys with your new rod say 30-40 lb braid gl to ya and rip some lip

Here is a clue DRAG DRAG DRAG DRAG DRAG DRAG...If you set your drag right you can dring in any fish that swims with the right set up...I have hear of the people catching 40+lb catfish while bass fishing....with the 12lb line or whatever...They have there drag set right...You dont want it too loose thought..Becasue then the fish will effortlessy take line from you
