Default Can you get lead from an old car battery?

I don't know what is in old batterys but it feels like there is some lead in there. If there is, is there a safe way to get it out?

yes there is lead in there but you don't want it there are much better ways to get lead look at your local auto tire dealer or dealership or scrap yard or talk to a plumber or bass pro shops etc, the list goes on and on but the one place you don't want to get lead from is old car batteries, the lead sucks and is very hard and dangerous to process, don't do it, hope that helps you make your decision, oh by the way look a little further on down the list in this section there is a good part on battery lead.

I went to a junk yard yesterday looking to buy some lead, and they guy told me, he knows a guy that he only uses the lead from batteries. He said it had some kind of plates in it. We looked in an old battery, but the lead was covered in something, and wasn't really a plate. Sort of like a grating. He melted some down, but I just think it is worth it. It would take so much of it to have anything. And besides it used to be full of acid, so I wouldn't recommend it.

I agree with the other posts, you won't yield enough lead out of a battery to make it worth the trouble.

    Default Battery Lead

Battery lead is a really bad idea. Dont recomend it but u can recycle those batteries it scrap yards and for 2 bucks like most scrap buyers pay you can buy a few pounds or trade for it. Thats where i have the best luck.

Besides the danger of sulfuric acid in itself, I am not sure that heating any residual acid (during the melting process) is a good idea. It may put off toxic fumes.

I'm a chemist at my place of work, and let me tell you something about sulfuric acid, it's not a good thing, leave the battery alone

Sulfuric acid fumes are extremely bad for you, they sting and burn you inside like a mother, not a great thing, trust me, might not screw ya up in the beginning but they will in the long run

    Once again, leave batteries alone

Used to work at a battery recycling plant complete with smelter. It's now a super fund site. Need I say more?
