"Packin Heat"
Absolutely, I am always with "iron" - in one shape or another -- "I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it"

I have a concealed carry permit and I usually carry one on me when on the river, especially if i'm alone.

Ain't no critters or snakes to worry about most places I fish, at least in MN. In CA its usually so crowded there are plenty of witnesses around. I had some coons messin around on the shore close to me once, but they took off. Things are changin in MN but mostly a guy can go about anywhere without a gun. Runnin into someone on meth might be a concern.
Probably easier to leave than put up with the hassle that would come from doing the world a favor by shooting someone who needed it. Even a .22 shot will carry a long way at night. The .357 is a good one, makes good noise, but limited to 6 shots, and my 9mm can poke a lot of holes but I aint' got much faith in its ability to end things quickly. The .44 is quite reliable but real loud and painful without earplugs. Also my snub .357 is real painful without earplugs. I reckon my fillet knife or bait knife would have to do. I feel undressed without my swiss army knife, but its a slow to use weapon. I generally stay away from a place I might need to use a weapon, and I'm gettin older and slower so until I get a permit I ain't gonna worry about it too much.

I have a concealed carry permit and I do carry . Thankfully I've never had to use it, but there have been a few times, at some of the boat ramps out in the boonies at 2 or 3 in the morning, when the weight of a pistol on my belt was really reassuring.

12 gauge marine shotgun for the boat.
Get the job done and quit playing with the idea of getting it done.
