Most of my luck has been with the head, mid sections..

Have yet to have anything hit the tail end.

    Default Head all the way

With shad i use the head over all. Then gut pocket. Last year i used heads and cought most fish on em. year b 4 i didnt no any better and only used em when bait was getting low. I always when for the gut pocket. But them two there r my choice.. And if it came down to picking from one or the other it would be the head

Voted head, which is true, but I actually prefer to cut from the back of the head down toward the start of the anal fin so I end up with the head and a partial gut pocket. I seem to have the most luck when the head is included. From what I have read, it makes sense... the head is supposedly one of the more nutritionally valuable pieces. In fact, when the grizzlies in the Northwest are catching more than enough salmon, they often eat only the head and skin, and roe and leave the rest(according to Animal planet lol). Fish may not be as picky, but it does seem to work better form me whether I'm using shad or bluegill.
