Probably a wise choice. This old saying carries a lot of weight. "There are old mushroom hunters. And there are bold mushroom hunters. But, there are no old, bold mushroom hunters"! And Jim, I lOVE the hens. You only have to find one to strike it rich. I know a few spots that grow back every year. One always has a clump of them growing in a 3 foot radius. Hell, I get picky when I take them. There's so much I only take the best parts. You guys ever harvest any coral fungi? These things are delicious! Very naturally spicy! Here's a pic.

Spring the Morels /Sponge mushrooms come up.. Darn things really shrink when you cook them,, I think it takes a grocery bag to make a skillet full after they shrink.

My wife loves them, so I will get her some this spring. The morrels are up when the lilacs are blooming.
I found a good sized hen of the woods two years ago this past fall. Didn't realize what it was and researched it after it had shriveled up. It didn't come back this past year, that I saw. Is that a usual happening?

Ya' it is, I've been picking them from the same spot/pile for 4 years straight. If not disturbed they'll spore from the same tree/spot for 3 or 4 years. after they're food source is depleted they won't spore anymore. The spot you found is either dead, or dormant because of poor conditions the past year. Check it periodically in september, it may come back up if the conditions are right.

Here's another one most people kick over on their mission to find morels. Great eating, but they have a poisonous look-a-like. (the jack-o-lantern) not for the novice. (do your homework) chanterelle mushroom - Google Search
And here's one of my favorites. oyster mushrooms - Google Search
They grow In all seasons if the conditions are right. I find a lot of them in the fall when hunting the hens.

    An interesting site
    Poisonous Mushrooms | MDC
Here's one that has an edible look-a-like. But, I wont even encourage anyone to hunt. This one is deadly if you pick the wrong one. Delicious, if you pick the right. Staying away from gilled mushrooms is the best for novice pickers.
