Shrimp for catfish bait

i have had great luck with shrimp. if you cant find shrimp with heads on buy wild caught. wild ones have a much different smell than the farm raised, although i have had great luck on the farm raised also. the tidal rivers are great places to use them here in maryland. gota figure they eat the heck out of grass shrimp so why not regular shrimp right, but they seem to work real well in upper potamac also. i allways have a small baggie of shrimp in the cooler. it is a great all around bait not only cats, but white perch also love em. and i happen to love white perch!!!!!! so grab yourself some shrimp and give em a try!!!!!!!!!

Fresh crawfish are pretty good if and when you can catch them. The smaller ones can be fished whole, hooked through the tail and then pinch/crush the body too allow the natual juices flow. The best store bought Crawfish to me is the Louisiana Red Crawfish that Kroger gets in every now and then. Even though I catch cats on rock shrimp as well" these are a larger shrimp. I dont buy the bagged 30/40ct,, fresh is better I beleive..

Heres a tip on shrimp some might not do,The tails are pulled from heads and peeled,then split, making 3pc of bait. The tail use them by themselves or like myself I tip it with a 1/2 a nightcrawler to help secure it to the hook. The head/claws is hooked through the back and fish under a float dragging it along the bottom(move a couple turns of the handle/stop/let sit for 5min/ repeat etc...)Killer technique on or near semi/rocky bottoms or rock flats. (I cannot begin to count the numbers of cats we've caught this way)

There is one more type of shrimp that outfishs them as well. The Fresh water Prawn.. It has a longer tail and can be split and cut into several 6-8 peices of bait. If you have a asian food market around, go and get them there.I've seen them at Kroger too!.. Here we have a farm up the road a bit that raises them and other types of shrimp and fish for fish markets and stores.. which people can go to and buy them directly from them..

I have never fished with shrimp. However I notice in May when I catch catfish in Lake Ouachita they have a lot of little grass shrimp and worms in there stomach.

What kind of shrimp do you fish with. Is there a bait shrimp and where would you get it.

I sell a good bit of frozen bait shrimp for catfishing. In fact, my best selling catfish bait, in order of sales are the following:

1. Canadian Nightcrawlers
2. Shrimp
3. Mullet
4. Chicken Livers
5. Blue-back Herring
6. Hot Dogs
7. Minnows (frozen and live)
8. Florida Pinks (only because I can get these for about 1 month)
9. Red worms (some folks use red worms to catch bream, which then they turn around and use the bream for catfish bait)
10. Packaged Cube bait.

For shrimp, I use whole jumbo shrimp, head-on.

My personal favorite choices for catfish are Pinks, Nightcrawlers, Mullet, Shrimp... in that order.

I use Wal-mart shrimp if I can not get to Dave's supermarket and buy the fresh Tiger shrimp.works good for myself and my fishing buddy.

Go to Walmart. Buy uncooked shrimp. Works great. Take shell off.> thread up hook. Do not have to use entire piece.

I use to have a good deal of luck fishing with shrimp and crayfish, but not in the last 2 years. The area where I live, the Asian carp population is so bad even the drum (or river perch/ perch) are getting few and far between. Don't get me wrong I never did like hauling in perch after perch while trying to catch a decent cat... but honestly it was part of the hunt. I miss it a little. As for now when I do catch cats its always on Liver, Dip Bait, Cut Bait, or Worm. I have had shrimp in garlic and unleaded for the last year on at least one pole each time I have gone out for the last 2 years with no fish. Take it for what its worth, maybe its one of those deals that is dictated by food available, when there is plenty they don't touch it when there is none look out.

When I was younger and dumb as hell, I would try any thing to catch or try to catch the catfish but not fresh shad and a good old skip jack works well for me.

ive been splitting the bag of frozen shrimp in half putting them in ziploc baggies. strawberry syrup in one and fresh cut garlic cloves in the other, shake them up well and leave them in the fridge overnight. both work well for eating size channels, i cant really tell a difference between which works better though.

after doing some reading around here im just going to start using garlic salt instead.

Last year shrimp was not very good for eater size channels. Now this year it's a toss up between nite crawlers (worms) and shrimp. I can get a bag of shrimp, uncooked, in the shell for about 8 bucks from Wally world. Count is listed as 60 to 70 shrimp per bag. That's a lot cheaper than crawlers @ 3 dollars a dozen. And easier than trying to get garden worms out of this dried out soil.

I'll try that garlic - shrimp mix. Sounds interesting.

i always get the head on shrimp try to get the stuff that is not previously frozen. I found that if they arent biting on just plain shrimp coat the shrimp in brown sugar.
