View Full Version : Drought Conditions In MISSOURI

I just read todays headlines on the drought and how it is affecting the waterways of SW Missouri, especially the trout fishing at Roaring River State Park.Since I,along with everyone here, are avid catfishermen(and women),I fish Missouri lakes all summer whether there are drought conditions or not.I guess my question is 'does lack of rainfall affect the catfishing?' In what way's would it?

If we don't get a LOT of rain, we will see things this generation has only heard of. I just hope the holes retain enuff water to support the population. The lower end of the rivers have changed here in West central Missouri; silted in etc. since Truman filled up. Who really knows how this may effect the fishing? Farm ponds stand to suffer even more, because they're already low. In some ponds it's already a long way from the normal bank out to the waters edge. That cuts down on the number of insects that reach the water. The lower the water level inside the dikes-the less the wind can oxygenate the water. This could concievably spell disaster for all species of fish. In most ponds and shallow creeks the cover is along the banks, and if there's no place to hide the whole food chain is in jeopardy. Come on RAIN!!!!

Arkansas right there with you Wolfman. Norfork Lake, at Wednesday AGFC report was down 14.5 from normal pool. Only running the generators about 1 hour a day now. But they claim the trout fisherman can wade the waters of the Norfork and White Rivers while the gens are not running. I went to Mountain Home last Monday and the marina there at Henderson landing looked really bad. Doesn't even look like you could launch a boat from the ramp there. Plus you can see islands there in the lake that you normally don't see.

Trips to work each day, the Missouri River is looking way too low in St Charles and around Howell Island. Florida had the same problem about 3 or 4 years ago, lakes way down or dried up altogether, they had drought conditions for like 2-3 years, but they finally got the rainfall they desparately needed, fishing is just now starting to recover. I'd happily do a rain dance if I thought it would help, lord knows we could use the rain. Good Luck to all...

I had a little over half an inch last nite and today. primitivefrn, yer right. The rivers do need some water for sure. Coming this slow it won't do much for them right now, but if we get the ground soaked up then maybe we'll get some runoff. Spose ta rain maybe 4 days this week. Can't hurt us none. I sure don't want to see a drought like I've heard my Dad talk about in the 30's.

I've been washing the truck alot lately and now I'm thinking I may set up the tent in the yard and sleep in it. That's about the only way I can think of to make it rain.Another year like the last one and we'll be hurting for sure. The old town of Linn Creek may rise again without some rain.

I got about a half an inch of rain in the Parkville area the other day. Calling for more rain today and tomorrow - will have to wait and see if it actually occurs. I need to buy a new mower - I mow two acres. May not have any grass to mow this year. So, the question is: to buy or not to buy!

For all the hoopla and forecasts of "possible torential rains", we got little more than heavy sprinkles so far this week, and maybe a quarter inch on Sat. I think the fresh grass seed I put out scared the rain away.

Well, hopefully our little drought will be over after today. Some big storms hitting the region right now. My county is under a tornado watch currently.
But tomorrow's another story! The rain should clear out in the AM and I will be hitting river at the crack of dawn!

It's still holding right at the same temperature here but at least the wind aint blowing. It might be up on the hill above me though.I'm down in a hole only about 15' above the lake with about 150' of hill on 3 sides of me,it's only open to the south and even then only to just across the lake to another large bluff.

Well up here in Cameron looks like we missed most of what hit Kansas and Nebraska. Got up at 3:45 AM and was suprised to see the streets are not even covered. We got a small amount of sleet then snow yesterday afternoon and evening. The streets were still warm enough so they are not even slick now.--paddle:0a17:

Wolfie, I'm afraid I will have to tell these folks you embellished that story about Noah on Truman. I didn't have an omelet; I had fried eggs. And it's been wet here for 48 hours. Snow on the grass this morning. Melted pretty soon today though. Still drizzling.

has the drought effected the fishing? I think it has .. last year I had really good luck in the spring but soon the water was getting low and I could not buy a bite..got a few later in the summer but normally we could go to the river and come home with a basket full.. last year we were lucky to come home with 3 or 4 after a night fishing.. I started to think it was just me but I talked to a lot of guys fishing the same area.. a lot of them are blaming it on northern states not releasing water on the Missouri but from what I have read..there is no water to be released! I have had more problems this year just getting in the water than I have in the past 20 years of fishing. Most of the ramps are almost out of the water and those that are not you have to drop off the ramp to get into enough water to float your boat. The other thing I have noticed is finding shad..as the water drops I can not get where I used to find shad .. I guess I'm going to have to spend more time on the water looking for them than fishing.. are you guys across the state having the same problems? You would thing though if there is less room for the fish to move around you would be able to locate and catch them easier..that was not the case for me last year..I hope this year is better.

Ken I went out for a while as well, I got a late start and man was it miserable. I was only out a couple of hours. I decided to wait for a better day or maybe even night fish which I don't usually do till late July if then. I can't remember the last time we had a strong current from the dam seems like at least three years. In a normal year April is the month for current in the main channel. I think the sky may be falling? See ya on the sandbar!

I'm afraid if We don't get some rain they won't get the lake back up as soon as they normaly do.This time last year it was already back up 3' higher than it is now.Truman is a foot lower than this time last year so it's not like Truman is holding the water to get it back up.When they do bring LOZ back up 6 more feet it is going to put a hurt on Truman without some rain.I think the wife said She heard on the radio they had cut down the flow at bagnell. It's just not sounding good anywhere around us right now, this should be the rainy season.
Jess, I did my part getting the warm weather here by not cutting my hair off yet.You need to do yours by getting your crew together to going fishing in a boat to bring the rain.lol!!

We're off to a strange start this year it's seemed more like the first of June these last few days.I had to fire up the big A/C in the house just to breathe good.I can't ever remember needing A/C in the house before Easter.I usually don't turn it on till about Memorial Day or after.

Well guys I can predict the weather. If I plan grass seed then I will get high winds for about a week. If I water my yard it will be hot and dry. If I wash and wax and detail both trucks it will rain for a week. So I got to mow my yard and wash and wax and detail my trucks to get alittle rain going. I have not wash or wax them since last year before the good rains. I wash them this year and it rained the next day.

04-17-2006, 04:06 PM
Depends on how busy I am and how many times I have to mow my yard. I have 1/2 acre yard on a very steep hill that I have to push mow for the time being. It usually takes about 6 hours and about 3 gallons of gas. So no rain is good for not mowing the yard and leaves more time to fish. The down side is no rain = poor fishing.
