That's my favorite catfishing method! Of course we do it redneck style LOL!! If anyone ever wants to go let me know and we'll hit the water. I probably do it different that most:)!! Everyone that's ever been with me will tell you ' You'll have a great time'!

Got some jugs ready to use this spring if we get enough water to use the ramps in the lakes around here. What do you do different than most juggers?

Augila, where do you fish mostly? (What part of the State)
My trick is how I catch the bait.

We didn't get to do alot jugline fishing last year, someone wouldn't let it rain down here in Tx. So the water levels got to low and they stopped all boats on the lakes around here till just recently.
I'm looking forward to jugging this year though.:)

I fish mostly Tawakoni and Fork , sometimes the Sabine River. Did real well last spring on all 3. Caught our limit most every time, catfish on Taw. and Fork and Whites on the Sabine. Tried Lake of the Pines a few times but didn't have much luck.

Hey guys. Welcome to the board. The skips usually start running around Greenville around early to mid May, and are, as far as I can tell, are usually somewhere in the area until about September or so. Look for warm water inlets or fish jumping around dikes. Throw white or silver jigs or a sabiki rig.
I used to jug fish a lot, but it got to where I was burning 8 gallons of fuel just rod and reel fishing, so I quit jugging, more or less. Still got some jugs, though. I usually jugged in July or August, but I've got some buddies that have been doing pretty good in May.
Good Luck!

dudlbugr, do you fish public or private waters up that way?

I love to jug fish!
Hit the Verdigris Navigational Channel in OK
I jug fish sometimes at the lake in whiteville do pretty good for the most part. I have some swimming pool noddles I made up insted of jugs like them alot better, they dont take up as much room in the boat and dont get tageled as bad.

I do quite a bit of jugfishing, mostly in the current of the Arkansas River, or in the current in the outlet cove at the nuclear plant. I've tried jugging in lakes a few times, but haven't had much luck.

Hate to hear that Jeffery Bunch! Any reason why? I'd rather jug fish than any other type!! Just can't beat it!

Rip, we use white qt. castrol jugs. There easy/cheap to get (oil change places) and don't take up to much room. If we get a 35 or so lb cat on one it'll hold it down for several seconds but it normally will come up. We also jug mostly at night! Nothing like being on the water at night and hearing nature!

Tony,
I fish the Mississippi River 90% of the time, the Sunflower about 9%, and private ponds (for bait or bas...bas...bas...bait) about 1%. There is a discussion going on the MDWFP about whether oxbows are public or private, but I'm putting in at public ramps, so I'm not too worried! ;)
You fishing mainly on the rez?

What's your user name on the MDWFP site?
I fish anywhere I get a chance, but mostly the Rez.

Tony,
I'm dudlbugr over there as well. Mostly reply on topics involving catfishing; a few on hunting and anything on trespassing. I think Dennis does a good job running the site. We'll have to get together for a fishing trip this spring or summer!

I too used to love to jug! Listening to one of the jugs get struck hard is hard to beat. After a few of the guys on here got me to try rod and reel fishing jug fishing became a thing of the past! Watching that rod tip bend just keep on bending. Its just hard to beat that...............

Anyone fishing out of Vicksburg ? Trying to learn a little about the area and how to catch fish in the river. Tried my luck several times last fall with very little success . Any recs. for this time of year ? My son is getting discouraged as well as I. I have heard that this area has great catting ,I just must not be doing something right. Would welcome any suggestions .

rat, there are a lot of good juggin runs at vicksburg.........i've been from vburg north all the way to greenville several times....... try floating the sandbars with cut skipjack or cut shad ,,,, 15 to 25 ft water.... drops off your jugs from 1.5 feet to 6 or 8 ft ............wait on warmer water and keep up with the river gauge at vburg and gville........... anywhere from 25 @ greenville on down, u should be able to catch some good fish juggin.... hope this helps........ also ... pull into the sandbar to the 15 ft water , then turn 180 degrees and throw the jugs out from the 15 ft water out to the 25 ft water...................

Coach, Thanks for the reply. Will sure give it a try. I have tried this in slightly shallower water in the fall . No problem getting shad, but how do you get skip jack, not sure I know what they are. Also how deep do you rec. fishing in that depth of water?

03-25-2006, 10:53 PM
Coach ,I just reread your post. I think you mean to set the jug lines from 1.5 to 6 or 8ft. deep.
coach
03-26-2006, 12:21 AM
drop lines = line length off each jug............. be sure to put at least a 2 oz weight on the lines , otherwise the current will blow the bait up outa the water and all your bait will be at about the same depth.... check around with local folks and find out how they catch skippys ....... sabiki rigs or small crappie jigs will do the trick ...... check with somebody down that way that fishes the big water , they will tell u how/where to get skippys.............u need to use at least 6/0 ss hooks too ...... and make sure the hooks are sharp.... i suppose u cut the shad into steaks or use the little ones whole...... when u hook the shad , make certain the hook point is all the way thru the bait ........just the opposite of "hide the point" for sunfish
coach
03-26-2006, 12:32 AM
another thing that might help u rat............ when u are lookin at a bar u think u wanna float ............. check the current off the bouys ... ride by them and see what direction the current is running ......... unless the wind is really bad , your jugs will follow the same route as the current seam off the bouys ....

Thanks Coach. Will give it a try when the river gets lower and the temp is warmer .

I totally agree with ya Tony, theres nothing like being out on the river/water at night. I love it and there isnt anything else I'd rather be doing.

rebelzgrl76 where do yu fish the bigbee?i grew up fishing that river way before and up to the dredging and locks and all that.i was born in columbus ms and grew up in carrollton al.we always fished up river from the old landing at pickensville al.i love that country life.
I have never jugged for catfish before back in Missouri we used to run trout lines when the Ms river was & catch a ton, but I have never jugged.
is jugging like using the trout line method, except for the fact that your not tied off to anything like you are when you run a trout line.

Anchored juglines are kind of similar to trotlining; Arkansas even considers anchored juglines to be trotlines. Freefloating juglines are a different matter, especially when jugging in a current. You're always chasing jugs, even if there isn't a cat on them. It's work just trying to keep them in one general area. But it's very productive. And while there's something to be said for feeling those big pulls on a trotline, wondering what you're going to see when you get to that point on the line, chasing jugs, having a jug go under when you reach for it, that's lots of fun too.

Free floating jugs are good for large bodies of water (reservoirs, Dammed Lakes, etc..) Tie off 1 to 8 foot of trotline to your choice of jug with a weight and hook on the end. Put your favorite bait on it and spread them out (in ms, no more than 25 per person) and watch'm work! Nothing beats it JMHO!!
