View Full Version : Calling all GMR fishers!

Hey folks, I was thinking of maybe, with some help of course, trying to promote a small outing for all the regular GMR guys to get together and meet one another. Was thinking maybe a dozen guys from here, not a big full blown event, just a chance to get a group of folks together on the home water. I was thinking somewhere around Middletown/Hamilton area so its half way for the Dayton group and half way for the Cinci folks.
Now I dont want to take anyones favorite spots but would be looking for a good stretch that is public, can hold a dozen guys, allows overnight fishing.

Anyone interested in helping me coordinate such a effort? anyone know of a good place to put a bunch of folks?

Anyone , anyone? Id love to meet some of the names I see on here all the time.

Im thinking maybe in June sometime.

Feedback, Thoughts, Ideas?

I think it would be a good idea Mark. I think me and my brother would be interested in joining some folks down south. I haven't fished GMR that far south though, so I am no help for finding a good area.

only problem with a gathering on the GMR is there are very few spots where you can fit more than 3 people, for the most part spots are crowded if you have more than 2. the only area i beleive you could do it would be in hamilton. there are 2 boat launches there and quite a bit of bank-space. the one area with a ramp is a good area but it gets slammed really hard, and the other stretch is channelized and only 1/4-1/2 mile between two dams. as far as doing an overnighter, their both not the greatest areas to be after dark but if you have 12 folks i beleive that would be a pretty good deterant. there is an area called Reitchler Forest right before hamilton, its a good area (bank-fish only) but unfortunately they have developed the "fear of the dark" that is so contagious amongst our parks, they close at dusk. also you have to pay to be on the property. im afraid these 2 areas are your only options on that river. have you thought about a reservoir? maybe cowan lake?

Dink, It all up for discussion! Cowen might be a nice inbetween spot as well, allows for a lot of shore fishing, boat access if you got a 9.9 or less and a campground.

Any other ideas folks? we will let this topic run its course for the next day or two and then we will see where the concensus is.

I would be up for either spot but I would have to agree the the gmr near Hamilton isn't multi fisherman friendly I used to fish down by the new damn on river road and all day long it was me and 2 or 3 other guys then about ten oclock i would bet there was 25 or 30 couldnt get your line in any where the is a spot behind columbia bowl that could handle a about a dozen or so late at night as long as it isn't too muddy I fish there all the time losts of channel and carp have seen some 9 and 12 pound blues from that spot and I caught a 25 pound shovel last year pretty quiet never had any trouble there

in middletown where route 4 crosses the gmr there is a big hole upstream of the bridge and you could get about 10 guys down there. is cowan any good for flatheads?

The GMR is as low as I've seen it for this time of year. There's easily 4' of visibility in still water. I've been down a couple times this year already. I want to try and target some "winter" flatheads in deep holes, but have not found good holes I can get to from the bank.

I'll keep an eye on this thread. I look forward to meeting fellow catfisherman and learning a thing or two new.

Any more to this gathering? I hate to mention it but a public place such as WC Dam area has lots of room, granted the fishing is not so hot, but surely a couple would be caught. I would be willing to put some time into this & help out. Maybe a small cookout, etc...

Hey Bryan, Ill take all the help I can get. And the WC Dam area would allow boat guys to get out and some decent shore fishing access. Let me send an email to MCD and ask about grilling, late hours etc. Perhaps we could get permission for 1 night to do something like that.

Mid June like the 17th? perhaps... I like the barbecue idea also.
More on this later,

that ramp area is open 24/7, except for times of high water and floods (thank God metro-parks didnt get a hold of it). its also a really safe area, WC police patrol it regularly as well. the only disadvantage might be the boat traffic during the day on the weekends, and the dreaded jet-ski'ers. but at night on the weekends it gets really quiet.

Hows the fishing at the WC Dam? I have never been. I have heard from a few people that its not very good. They said if you could somehow get on the otherside it might be a lot better.

the dam itself isnt any good but from about 100 yards downstream to around a 1000 yards downstream there are tons of nice flatties. they are very weird i have never caught one on bottom with a sliding rig or any other bottom rig for that matter the only way we catch them is flipping just like bass fishing after dark exept we use a big circle hook no weight and a big shad, bull head or bluegill. just walk the bank and flip around any likely spot. we catch quite a few. ( oh yea theres nothing like catching a 25 pound flat with sometimes a couple feet of line out) send me a pm if ya wanna hit it this summer!

Post to bring this back up.

Mark,

Can you get something lined up? I think we could also possibly have a small GMR Tournement too. Maybe have everyone one throw in say $5. If we can get say 10 guys (which we could prob get more) we could buy a BOC Shirt & Hat, then donate the rest to the BOC. What does everyone think about that?

Bryan, sounds good to me, if you keep nagging me like the Ole lady, Im sure it will happen....
We should talk about this in detail and get some fact down, anytime this week my brother!! That would be cool to by a prize or two and donate the rest.
Im still looking at June 17?? tentatively would this work for you and Dink? ( yeah, misery loves company so Ill be dragging you two in to help me)

welcome to the BOC. The outing if it takes places will be on the Great Miami River, not thr Little Miami. I guess we should have been more clear. The boats that we have, while are small but they are not small enough to put (carry to/from) the Little Miami.

have you ever fished up there in Morrow where the two rivers come together in town?

Salmonid
04-25-2006, 10:52 PM
Rookie, in Morrow is where the Little Miami River and Todds Fork come together, that hole gets hammered by the locals so I wouldnt waste your time there. I do get a lot of Gar there at that hole.( with my fly rod)

To answer another question earlier, no the Little and Great Miami Rivers do not ever join together, The Great Miami typically runs just West of Rt 75 from Indian Lake south to the Ohio River meeting it near the Indiana border, while the Little Miami River is 1 big valley to the East, it runs from just South of Springfield down paralelling Rt 68, then 42 then rt 71 all the way to the Ohio River on the East side of Cinci. Both are great river systems!

The Gathering which still needs a good name ( hint hint) will be held on the Great Miami River just South of Dayton near West Carrolton Ohio.

Sat eve, June 17th, 4:30 till 2:00 am, Mark your calendars!! Boat or shore access.

Dellis, yup , still looking at June 17th, from 4:oo pm till Midnight for the "offical" outing with anyone wanting to stay later can, I figure start meeting at 4:00, Im planning to have a grill there and cook some dogs while we meet each other and sign in, then start fishing by 6:00 or so. Still planning on meeting at the WC ramp by the dam, that will be our check in and meeting spot, from there is lots of good bank access and a ramp for the pool for all boaters, should be a good event. Yes, Im hoping to get 5 bucks from everyone to pay for BOC prizes and anything else will go to BOC so it will be a non for profit fundraiser!
Drop me a PM for more questions and I will Officially repost this later this week under a new title, look for it then.
