That's a pretty awsome critter. I was watchin In-Fisherman this last weekend and they went after Alligator Gar by Lake Livingston (Sp?) in Texas, Big Blues on the James River in VA and White Sturgeon in the Columbia River. They landed a Gar that went 98" and 44" girth. Said it was the largest gar ever video'd. They estimated it's weight at a conservative 230#. If you say this ones bigger, I'm believing it. From the show I watched, they give one heck of a fight?
Just out of curiosity, what do you do with one of them big boys if you decide to keep it?
Do you eat them?
Sure don't look like something I'd want mounted on my living room wall!
Anyway, I bet it was the catch of a lifetime!!
Congrats and tightlines,

If it makes you feel any better, that fish was eaten.
Those guys don't waste any fish. ;)

That fish would have died ne ways if they had let it go. And if there ever comes a point that those fish will be endangered then im sure there will be strict laws protecting them.
By the way, that fish in your picture looks like he went the way of old yeller and ended up in the freezer. :cry-big:

Florida has moved to restrict taking of alligator gar. It and other state fishery biologists have noted a sharp decline in populations. I've read the same thing is happening in Texas so look for restrictions on taking alligator gar in the future.

Gar are often accused of eating game fish, but studies indicate that most of thier diet is of rough fish or marine life that's dead, sickly, or dying. They aren't the nuisance fish many see them as. Neches, are you catching longnose or alligator gar on your trotlines? Its the alligator gar that appears to be having problems sustaining its population. Longnoses, spotted, and shortnose gars are doing ok.
