Most of the people around here that I have talked to use plastic 55 gal, drums. I bought a couple from the Rankin Co. co-op for 10.00 each. I went past there this week and they still have alot setting outside.

I mainly fish the Pelahatchie Bay area of the Res. and do alot of jugfishing, and some tightlining. I'm getting rigged up to start crappie fishing at night using the lights that you put in the water. I have had real good luck with fresh crappie used as cut bait for blue cats.

Hey ronnie are the drums llegal? don't know why i have this in my head but i thought someone said you could only use the homemade wooden boxes?? I am not trying to call you out at all....just trying to be sure i have all my ducks in a row before i go do it...can't afford a ticket at all!! How do you weight the barrels down?do you use any stakes to hold them stationary or what?? Thanks, Rick
Ronnie Reeves
02-25-2006, 11:43 PM
Rick, I made dog houses out of the ones that I bought. You may have to use wood box's in the res. call Ms. game & fish to make sure. I don't hand grab so I don't know the regulations on that. Good luck on your search.

Ronnie Reeves, we should meet on the water one day this spring. Do you jug in the daytime or night? I jug that same area.
Ronnie Reeves
03-07-2006, 10:12 PM
Tonyjr, I mainly fish during the day but will go night fishing also. I went this afternoon to catch some bait for the morning. The shad have moved shallow in the bay, caught enough to throw a few jugs out in the morning. Iwill be in the bay in the morning, I fish a Polarcraft alluminum boat with a 25 hp. 4stroke Yamaha. Give me a shout and we will get together.

Hi. Im new to the forum and just learning about catfishing. Any one catching any at Barnett . I caught a good bit in April Last year jug fishing. Are they biting yet? I know the crappie was fun catching last week before the rain and cold front moved in . They will be biting good as soon as we get a little warmer weather, probably by next weekend. My son really would like to start catting more. Do you guys do better tightlining , jugging ,or trot-lining?
TonyJr
03-26-2006, 06:30 PM
This weather changing back and forth have them off currently. I believe in 3 to 4 weeks it'll start getting right!:rock-big:
Ronnie Reeves
03-28-2006, 10:21 PM
Ratred, I don't trotline anymore due to those that love to cut the lines. I do real good jug fishing but I have started baiting a couple holes to take my boys so they can do some tight lining.

Ronnie , hope to touch base with you or Tony JR sometimes this spring . My son loves fishing and always goes with me. He is the best fishing buddy a guy could have. He is 14. How old are your children ? Please post a message if you guys start to doing any good in Pelehatchie Bay . We went to Lake Washington yesterday, caught a few crappie then tried the cats with some drift fishing. Only caught a couple small ones.

I have two boys 10 and 14. My 10 year old loves to fish, I took him one morning last week and threw out one line of jugs. We caught seven in about 30 min. pulled them up and went home. Had a good mess of fish for supper.

My chill'ns are young. 4 and 2!! We wont start jugging until after Easter. I'll let you know how we do. We go at night only!!! It's a lot calmer and not as much traffic nor yahoos.
Ronnie Reeves
04-05-2006, 07:17 PM
Tony, I agree with you about the traffic. I'm headed out in the morning for a few hours in the bay if the wind doesn't get to bad. Give me a shout sometime you are going out at night I might mix some night time crappie fishing with some jug fishing.

My son and I done a little tight lining this afternoon above 43 . Only caught one channel. Great evening to be on the water . I agree with you guys about the traffic on Barnett . It seems to be a lot of inconsiderate people on the water . The weekends are terrible with the traffic. Thats why I like to go to the Mississippi at Vicksburg. The catfishing should get good very soon.

Yesterday my son and I went above 43 and got into a school of white bass. C&R about 15 right at dark. Also caught several slab crappie. Great afternoon. Hard to get serious about the cats with the crappie spawning. Plan to try the crappie again tomorrow. Got to get um while you can . Will probably try some jugging this wkend .

Jugged a few hours last night in the Bay . Just caught very small fish . Largest was maybe half a pound . Disappointed, have heard reports all week about how good the cats were biting in the bay. I don't know who turns the reports in to the paper, but there wasn't anyone else even catfishing out there last night. Just a couple of boats trying for crappie. Probably will try above 43 tonight.

I have been pole fishing nailing the bream and crappie. I have caught several channel cats on my spinner jigs. I threw out a line of jugs one day and caught a small mess of blue cats. They are just not hitting yet. I threw out three jugs with anchors in 20 feet, went fishing and someone had taken one of them I guess it must have had a fish on it. Threw two jugs out the other night in shallow water with whole live bream and both of them were gone the next morning. They also had anchors on them. I don't know why some people feel like they have to steal something in order to have some meaning in life? Looks like the crappie spawn is starting to wrap up in the bay so I will start targeting bream to put on my jugs, its fixing to get right for the blue cats :)

We jugged above 43 Fri. night. Started off real good. Caught 10 or 12 one to three lb. fish quickly then the rain and lightening started . Weatherman had said it would be out of the area by 8 pm. Boy was he wrong . Found myself in a bad situation, all my jugs out , lightening, downpoor, and several miles to the launch . Probably could have really put it on the cats, but me and lightening don't mix. Made the call to run for the launch instead of sitting in the boat, or standing under trees on the bank. Luckily not much wind. Made it back soaked but safe. Also had a very good fish fry today. By the way, I had rainsuits that we didn't even use and usually wouldn't get caught in such a potentially dangerous sit. With the fish biting so good we never even noticed a very lite sprinkle turn into an electrical storm. Luckily we learned a lesson and fortunantly not the hard way. I plan to be a little more vigillant in the future. My friend and son are ready to go again asap.

We fished all night a while back off 43 near Thompson Grocery. Aside from the gators when we launched, it was a beezy and bitter start off. After several hours and checking on a few jugs, we had a few keepers and was a great night. Daylight came all too soon and breakfast was calling. We enjoyed ourselves so much and looking forward to going back. Theres nothing like seeing the looks on kids faces when you pull in a nice Cat. The entire night was down right amusing and surprisingly, they never once complained about being sleepy!:)

We went last weekend for about 4 hours one night. Slow and small!! We caught about 20 and threw 8 or so back! We ended up with a dozen and a few 2lbs for some good eating!! I really think that next week and forward will be the times to go!! We need to meet up one night and go!

04-29-2006, 05:06 PM
Tony, we went last night and caught 18 average fish. About that many small ones and through backs. Had a lot of fun. Hooked one that took my jug clean out of sight for at least 20 min. Finally it resurfaced about 100 yards away. We chased it for several more mins. with it going under several mins. at a time, before it got caught in a fallen tree top. We never even got to see it before it got off . My friend about cried. He was wanting to jump in after it at one point when we watched the jug submerge and go along side the boat about 2 ft. beneath the surface. I think all the gators helped him stay in the boat though. We were using liver and shrimp . They didn't seem to have a preference . I'm having a very hard time finding any shad this year. Anyone catching shad around the bridge, docks , or on the river? I think I would do better if I could get some. Years past I have found them easily. I think the big cats are about to get active. Everyone please post how your doing.

I have been fishing the RES for a couple of yrs but not for Catfish mainly for Crappie & Bass.
I am looking to start fishing for these cats (I havent fished for them since I moved from Missouri bout 5 yrs ago) & would love some info/help on which areas are better than others out on the Rez.
I go fishing alone 110% of the time (cant force the wife to fish but she sure loves eating them) so if any of you'll want to hook up & go out sometime I got the boat if you know where to fish:big_smile:
Just send me a PM & we will get together

Cmac, just let me know! I'm ready at the drop of a hat. I'm getting my boat in next week and I'll be out there most every weekend. I don't jug during the day (WAY TO MUCH TRAFFIC). All my jugging is done at night. I'm set up for it though! I love taking people out jugging. If you read the Clarion Ledger read Bobby C's "week on the water" he's running this week. We went on a jugging trip and I think he's doing a story on it. I'll post a link to it when they run it!:smile2:
TonyJr we definitely will have to get together, I wont be able to go at all this weekend (well might be able to get out Sunday) the wifes family is coming to visit this weekend.
My boat isnt set up for any night fishing YET, One of my projects this weekend is to re-run my navigational lights from the switch to the front of the boat) I broke the base of the light last fall & never got around to fixing it since I very seldom did any fishing at night last yr. I have a 2001 17ft Javelin Venom with a little 90 on the back, so its got plenty of potential.
I will be looking for the article you mentioned. When is the best time for you go out fishing, I've got Banker hours I work 8-5 Mon-Fri, but can take off anytime if I have some notice.
Shoot me a PM & we swap #'s

The last few times out all we have caught was small fish. Tried Pelahatchie Bay last Sun. and above 43 a few days ago. Only seem to be small ones biting presently. Surely the big-uns are about to be hungry. Tried above lakeland ( hwy 25) today, just a lot of throw backs.

I am in the process of trying new baits and seeing what works and when. I have some frozen cut up bream and crappie soaked in Danny Kings "blood" punch bait that I am wanting to try right after a real heavy rain.
I have a couple areas in the bay that I am keeping chumed up for my boys to tight line around as soon as they get out of school for the summer.
I may go jug fishing early in the morning in the bay, I will post my results if I get to go.

Friday night, most productive trip to Rez. this year for me . Above 43 hwy. Instant action right before sunset. Caught 18 to take home , biggest 7lbs, several 2-4lbs, about 10 under 2. also caught around a dozen throw backs. Strange thing , all real good fish until about one hour after dark, then they got smaller and much slower. We called it due to the mayflies, they were about as bad as it gets. We also had caught some bluegill before dark and used them, not one bite. Fished with shad and shrimp. Nothing on shad. all on shrimp.... Very good trip for about 2 hrs. Now for the worst part (the cleaning). We are going to have a fry tonight, otherwise I mostly practice CPR. Anyone else do any good.

Walk on Charters are only 100.00 for an 8 hour trip and they have a guy clean what you catch also and bag it for you. Cant go wrong, I promise. Worth checking out and passing along. We are planning on going on several trips this summer. Hoping to see ya on a trip out maybe!

Any reports from the weekend? Tony Jr. ???? Ronnie???? Did you guys get to go? I almost went to the Bay and decided at the last minute to go to 43 . I thought the wind would be easier to avoid at 43 and I just seem to have better luck there this year. I've been to the bay several times this year so far and haven't caught anything over about 3 lbs. and most have been embarassingly small. It would be fun for us to have a contest one night for a couple hours to see who could catch the largest and/or most. I know my son would have fun. We could all meet each other and maybe give some pointers. I know I could use some advice at times.
Ratred, I went out Saturday night with Tony, & hes a great guy, it was thefirst time we had met although the fish wasnt biting I HAD A BLAST. Like you said they were biting before sunset & once it got dark the bite was over, we were in Pelahatchie Bay, so you didnt miss much in the bay area, I think we had four by midnight.
Anyways didnt catch much but had a blast just being able to go :}
Thanks

Have yall thought of hosting a gathing on the Ross Barnet? It looks like you have enough folks involved to make it a good one. You might even draw in some ex-sippi folks like me. :) I started my cattin' life on the RB and graduated Madison-Ridgeland in '84.

Anyone fishing this wkend? Sorry but I'm going to have to stay away from Barnett this wkend. Way to many crazy people on the water. Everyone be careful. There are tons of irresponsible and careless boaters out there. One person drowned last week due to an accident. At night , no lights, alcohol involved, no life vest. A set up for disaster. Hopefully many will learn from this. Always watch out for other boaters and be safe. Have a great holiday weekend.....

cmac let us know how you do in crystal lake. Years ago I done well with the bass. Not much luck last few yrs, however I know some have done well there. Never tried the cats there.
Ratred, I didnt fair to well at Crystal Lake (broke a $50 rod that I WILL be taking back to Bass Pro) , Love the lake (No JESKIERS or SWIMMERS!!!) but the fish were not biting I caught a couple of small Bass & a couple of small Crappie (I didnt fish for any cats but there was probably 35-40 "Noodle" jugs everywhere).
Even though I didnt catch anything worth a thing, I will definitly be going back!!!
There was one guy I spoke with that had 6 0r 7 small channel cats probably 1-2 lbs at the most, I did speak with several anglers that said they have been great the last couple of weeks at crystal lake.
I went to Crystal lake cuz I didnt want to mess with all the boat traffic at the Rez.
Ratred if ya ever want to hook up just shoot me a PM & we will get after them  I would love to go out with ya I usually go by myself 99% of the time as the wife hates fishing but loves eating fish (go figure) We can take my boat or yours doesnt matter to me just give me a hollar:big_smile:

We fish for anything and everything ( cats, bass, brim, crappie, ect... and saltwater fish for specks and reds ) I love saltwater fishing the most, hence my screen name:smile2: . Looks like another fishing buddy has lined up a Catting trip to Port Gibson for me next wkend, but will have to get you with us soon. We also camp a lot when we go. Maybe you can join us . I guess I am getting old,but it is just to hot now for camping until this fall..... We might could get some afternoon/evening fishing in anytime... Are you open for any evening trips ?

She must work on her interpretations and telepathic powers! We woulda caught several more but at 3:30 a.m. Mrs. Nag, "wanted to go"!:crazy::angry: !!! Caught alot of nice ones and only 3 or 4 throwback!! The wife was falling asleep as she took the pics! She didn't do very good or show the fish very well! O well, just wanted to share!
This bigger fish weighted 6.5 lbs and the other 3.5 lbs

HOW TO START A GATHERING
Mike Holladay
In order to put together a successful gathering, a few things are needed before you start:
1. Someone to do all the legwork and keep track of ALL the details
2. An idea of when the gathering will happen,
3. An idea of where the gathering will happen,
4. A way to take and/or secure reservations
To put a gathering together for the BOC, first post your intentions on an appropriate thread. After a few people have indicated an interest, determine the when and where allowing all members to have a say in this, with the majority determining the outcome.
Once the location and date have been settled on, it is time to start doing some legwork. Go by the suggested camping area and get some pictures of a campsite, cooking area, boat ramp, electrical connections, and the water surrounding the camping area, if possible.
Determine if the reservations can be made through a national database such as www.reserveusa.com (http://www.reserveusa.com/), or by some other means, such as an 800-number or local number. Determine what the rates are per night and post them to the board ASAP.
As more and more members sign up (and expect both additions and withdrawals throughout the process), keep track of which site they’ve secured.
If you can do it, it sometimes helps for you to reserve ALL the sites and allow each member to pay for the site as they sign up. It makes tracking sites easier and ensures everyone will be close together.
Next is determining what method and type of food you are going to have. My recommendation is at least ONE “community” meal. A large potluck dinner, a catered dinner (if donors can be found), an early morning breakfast, the potential is endless.
Any and all other meals should be at the discretion of each member (BYOF, bring your own food).
Are there going to be boats brought? Who is bringing them and how many? Are they small ones or big pontoons? Is there a dock or beach where they can be tied after being launched? Is bait plentiful? Are there any maps or GPS settings available? Who is going to have enough room for the “boat-less”? Is anyone going to give “seminars” such as how to throw a cast-net, making sinkers, using jugs, trotline pointers? Again, the subjects are endless! Sign up volunteers.
TAKE LOTS AND LOTS OF PICTURES!!
Track any and all changes and update the lists frequently. To do this, save the list as a “draft” in your email program, make changes as needed, copy and paste to the BOC, and re-save as “draft” again.
That way, you only have to make necessary changes, not re-type the whole thing.
T-SHIRTS ANYONE??
Get someone to do the legwork on t-shirts, including negotiating a reasonable price for each, expecting the ++ sizes to cost more (XX, XXX, 4X, 5X, etc).
A logo of some type on front and back is desirable if the design can be incorporated reasonably, otherwise just a “saying” will have to do.
Try to get them made locally and have someone in charge of dispensing and collecting for them.
THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE GATHERING IS TO HAVE FUN!!!!!

Here is a copy of what we did this year at one of our local Gatherings. Maybe it will help yall out, maybe not... Throw it out there on the Gathering Thread and see how much attention it gets. Someone has to step up and run with it and issue out the "orders". Pick a date and roll with it.

fltahead, I have been known to hit the rez about 3-4 times a week when Ican get away from work, Havent been in a couple of weeks though, Had a terrible weekend, the weekend before last lost 2 $70 jigging poles & had someone throw something out there car & it busted my window, but I was more ticked off at losing the poles than the window.
by they way got the window for $50 & I put it in myself so I guess that was a lucky break :}
Ayways you get out on the Rez much??? Maybe we can meet up sometime.
