I hunted deer with a Ruger Blackhawk in .41 mag, also carried a Ruger Redhawk in .44 mag but never got to use it. I carried a Highstandard double nine in .22 for years and then went to an AMT Lightening in .22 for squirrels.

I used to coon hunt with a pistol. It was a Stoeger Lugar 22 cal. Made just like the German lugars except it was a 22. I was pretty good with it too.

i knew a guy who shot a doe with a dessert eagle. he spooked the deer up and started shooting at it. he emptied the clip and wound up taking out two of her knee caps with one of the shots. she didn't go far and he finished her off.

1. Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 mag
2. Smith & Wesson 22 Jet
3. Lone Eagle 308 Win
You better have your muffs on with all of them:)

I solely hunt with a pistol during modern rifle season. I use a 357 mag with a 6 inch barrel, the recoil is nice and you can still place a nice 38 round in it for simple target allowing you to get a good steady/cheap practice hand. I would however suggest to carry your rifle along with you for the first year at least just in case Mr. Big comes by and you test your own nerve more than he does.

Colt .22 mag/long rifle revolver (yes both on the same gun) for grouse/rabbit/etc.
.41 cal Ruger (that was used during an archery bear hunt by force Bear tried to come up and join my dad and I in our tree stand, used the .41 to talk him out of it)
