When you are going down hwy 78 there are two stop signs after you pass ripley before palo verde. At the second stop sign make a left instead of the instead of the right too palo verde. When you come to the canal.
after about a 3/4 of a mile make another left and drive up the canal untill you hit the first irrigation dranged canal walk down and the talapia will hit your nitecrawler as soon as it hits the water and you will catch some bluegills too. Oh the west side of the canal!!

Hey riverbud! Ill be heading towards my place today (Friday). I have to work Sunday so Ill only get one day of fishing. Ill be after LMB off of Walters camp. Dont know if you'll be up that way this weekend. How ever Ill be heading back next weekend for three days. I just have to get out of Los Angeles. Taking the wife and girls with me this time. Next weekend I should be alone unless I can find a fishing partner.
Count me in of the BOC get together. Dont know when or where Ill show up but I would like to join the fellas for some cat info. I have a small duck boat that would hold one more adult. If I dont bring another person count me in as taking a non boater.
Keep me posted regarding date and times also location for the big cat round up!

karodi
02-15-2006, 01:32 AM
Yo dale i will be looking for shad when i come down for the gathering so keep you ears out for some locations for me. I will be using my cast net. Also if you can send my some pictures of the river too it would be great. Hit me at my home email (karodi2100@sbcglobal.net) Oh !! Is the river up right now ? Is it very trashey ? Thanks Keith

riverbud55
02-15-2006, 03:09 AM
karodi(keith) I,ll be getting some pic,s soon tried this last weekend but ran out of battries after a few pic.s, not much man made trash but nature sure left a lot , trees and a lot weeds and river grass, seams your always pulling that crap of your lines. here's a map satalite pic http://maps.google.com/?t=k&ll=33.594724,-114.536558&spn=0.001863,0.00273&t=h of were the dudes were getting the shad the pic shows a back water and in the middle youll see a white spec that is a car on a boat ramp, in front of the ramp is were thay were this last weekend. I did get some pics of this place ill post soon. the water you cant ever figer out should be up in april, the water comes up to its highest some time in the early AM around say 3am and starts coming down around 10 or 11 AM with low water around 3 to 4 pm, it may drop 3' or 4' each day. Fridays are a low water day with the water not coming up much. you can get a idea of how its been and going to be by going to http://www.usbr.gov/lc/riverops.html and looking at Hourly Elevations and Releases and finding palo verda look at todays info and past 4 day info any thing above 5000cfs is a good water elevation

janzaldo
02-15-2006, 02:52 PM
Dale, is it safe to swim in the river?

Jaime

riverbud55
02-15-2006, 08:35 PM
jaime your not going to swim against the curent but you can swim the river, before we had boats down there we used to tube down the river from in front camp around the bend http://maps.google.com/?ll=33.659139,-114.520562&spn=0.012324,0.015943&t=h get out walk back to camp takes about 5 min walk back to camp. it takes about 45 min to float around the bend. any one having a float tube mite be able to use them in that area for fishen. The river can kill though, just this last labor day weekend there was an 18yr old boy killed just up river from camp, kid tried to follow his bud across the river and couldn't make it, tried to swim back up river and tierd himself out, found him under a dock in front of 1 of the houses, if your ever fall in the river out of your boat DONT fight the river you will get out some were there always a sand bar to be found get to the edge of river .anouther thing is to always have shoes on just in case ya need to do some walking to get back. but ya we swim the river all the time. when its 115 ya got to cool off some how.

janzaldo
02-15-2006, 09:35 PM
Thanks Dale, I think I will stick with the public showers. I have alot of respect for the river. I once flipped on Cedar river. The current can be decieving. The current was so strong, I lost a shoe!. Luckily I was wearing a life jacket and the big man was watching over me. I also forgot to mention my buddy Allen and Greg helping me up on the boat! This happend at the Iowa gathering 2003.

Jaime

azraider
02-15-2006, 11:26 PM
I have never used shad but I bet they would kick some tail!!
I also think you will catch big channels and stiper on them. Last september we cought a 12lb striper across from walters camp on liver.

If I can make it i will bring alot of talipia.

Billy Jo
02-16-2006, 11:32 AM
AZRader (Brian) good to hear you are still around. Congratulations on the new baby. Looking foward to fishing with you again, hope you will be able to make the gathering at the river in April. Are you still able to get Telapia in the canal by PIR ?.

Riverbud (Dale) Well I finely started to work on the cabnet for the ice maker. Would like to bring it down and get it set up sometime in March. I just returned from Lake Havasu on the 14th, glad I didn't take the boat, the wind was blowing so hard the birds were flying backwards. If you could let me know when you are going to be at the river, the end of Feb or in March I can meet you there.
Just to let you know this is not a large ice maker, It will only make about 20lb a day. But should work good for your personal use. I look into getting new seats with highter backs for my boat, but at $104 ea, I thank I will wait until the ones I have need to be replaced. Did you get the motor for your toon put back together and running?

Donald, sorry haven't got back to you. How are you doing? I haven't done any fishing this year but plan on spending a lot of time on the river this year from April thru the end of October.I thank I will take a run down to Palo Verde to fish one night during the April gathering, It's only 22 miles south and I sure like that area. My son,Grandson and I were there last year in Sept and my son got a 34lb flathead on a 4" bluegill my Grandson got a 7lb striper on a goldfish and we got 4 eater channels 3 to 6lbs on cut bluegill. Do you thing you would be up to making the run for one night? We got the bluegill in pond the by the boat ramp. I will need to talk to Dale and see if I can tow the boat to the area that Brian told him were to get the telapia. Hate to get in there and not be able to get out towing the boat. Would be good to be able to stop on the way to Paloe Verde and get bait. We can get goldfish in Palo Verde (Maybe)

Beardenandrew. Welcome to the BOC. Would be great if you would like to join us at the river in April. You will need to get a colorado river stamp. Hope to see you there.

Hi Billy Jo, does your ice maker need purified water? Just wondering. It sure is going to come in handy?

Jaime

Billy Jo
02-28-2006, 09:32 PM
Hey Jamie how it going? The ice maker will need to have a water filter installed on it. The water at the river is not that good. This ice maker is just a small unit only makes 20lb a day, not real sure how good it will work down there with the heat. But it only needs to make enough ice to keep my drinks cold,if it will do that, it will be working just fine.(LOL)

Hi Riverbud,
~ Since you are the river pro, can you help me make certain I am ready for this trip? I have never fished a river for flatheads before, I want to make certain I am ready...

* Leader recomendations~
~ Do you recomend a braided leader, mono, other?
** I currently use a 50# Vanish.

* Lead weight
~ I usualy use a "cannon ball" style weight on a slip sinker rig. I am assuming that a flat weight would be best to avoid moving too much in the current.

* Will I need a California license, or is there a Colorado stamp to buy?

* What are the requirements on number of rods one person can fish with at a time? (If two max, do I need a two pole stamp?)

~Sorry for all the questions, I appreciate any help.

janzaldo
03-01-2006, 09:22 PM
Doing good Billy Jo, thanks for the info; will defenitaly bring plentty of bottled water! AS far as ice go is their a place close by we can buy ice? How about fire wood? is that something we should bring? are they even allowed?
Good questions AZflats, I know for sure need a stamp to fish the Colorado river; but I live in Ca.

Jaime

riverbud55
03-02-2006, 12:35 AM
Welcome to the BOC beardenandrew and i'll put ya in and we'll hope to see ya there

AZflats your all good on your rig, I have been using 30# maxima for line and leeder with 2oz flat no roll sinker. all your basic flathead ways of fishing work at the river. u will have a hard time finding any water any deeper then 15' with tree stumps and sand bar drop offs , your AZ lic with a colorado river stamp will fish both sides of the river and all back waters and waters of the colorado river(and I think that includes lake cibola)and you'll need a 2nd pole stamp. why we have the river stamp is that us in CA are paying to use AZs half of the river and you folks in AZ get to pay CA to use our half:confused:

hey bill got stuck on the same one this last weekend:o and had to walk the boat out off the sand, going to have to work on finding a way threw that area in low water before i run that toon up the river, there will be away, a lot of sand has piled up there in the spot i used to run, almost seems the deep water is right next to the shore. if the water is running clear and warm enough i,ll put my waverunners in and ill be able find a way alot easyer and faster then in a boat

jaime there's a camp store about 75' out in front of the camp sites thats got ice, water, soda, beer, ice cream and other basic needs. As far as fire wood goes I'm going to try and get some mesquite over across the river on the indian reservation, got a chain saw and maybe i,ll talk bill in given me a hand on getting some when he brings the ice machine down on the 19th i think is what he said.

bill im thinking i mite b able to run a line from inside the trailer it has a good water filtering system in it and just chaged the filter this last weekend for the first time and man did it need it, nasty nasty. bill how big is the machine I may need to be able to put it in my little storeroom, thay just sent me 14 page list of new rules:rolleyes:for the camp and it says i can only have 1 storeroom outside and a BBQ and nothing else can't even store fire wood outside says i can have 100 SQ ft storeroom so i'm thinken about getting or building a bigger one wouldn't mind a taller one anyways to put some fishen rods in. I think most of the rules will be good for the camp if they hold to them and i think that will happen, got some new managers and shes the sister of the owner, things in camp have been getting a little out of control for the last few years. basicly for the last few years there have been no rules. most of the time it wasnt a problem but there always has to be someone that takes things to far

well now then 4 the fishen report
water temp 58 to 60 , air temp hi low 80's lows mid 40's, 3 of us from my boat fished the river fri from 11am to 5pm with myself getting 1 - 2 1/2# channel sat morn made it out by 10 channel didb't get any thing but a few bites, we had diner then hit up a canal fished a few hours and i ended up with 2# and 3 1/2#ers. sun morn we made it out by 9am and fish till 2pm and i got 1 @ 3#. So in 3 days I got 4 fish and my uncle and cousin got zep, I got all of mine on hog wild useing a small peice sea spong for a holder and trebble hook, we also had out some shrimp and danny kings punch bait with only few bites on them, we also had out 2 goldfish at all times and never got a bite on them. well i guess theres next week. i think the water temp will come prety fast soon, if i rember from last yeat the water temp was about 72

ya all have a good one c-ya

Billy Jo
03-02-2006, 10:49 AM
Dale, I will be down on the 18th in the morning. Ice maker is small 18"wx28"L33"H ,it only makes 20lb of ice a day. I have got everything to hook up ice maker except filter. I made a small Insulated cabnet to put ice maker in. I will bring it with me when I come. If we can use it ok, if not I will bring it back.I am sure we will be able to work it out.
So you got stuck on the same sand bar, maybe we can can find a way to cross and mark it with plastic jugs. Have you heard anythang form Bluehunter? I though he wanted to make a trip down there sometime this month. I thank my son is going to come with me. But I can never tell what he is going to do. If Bluehunter and my son are going, I will bring my boat, if they don't come I will leave it at home. Sure hate to go to river without my boat, kind of like walking around with only one shoe on. See you on the 18th.

thought i would post last weeks fishen report, man hope you dude's are getting some fishing in, are the waters around you guys starting to warm up? at the river the weekend before last it was only 60*. any body fished the river further down south yet? if so do you know the water temp.

BLYTHE: Bass fishing has been good in the main river, backwaters, and area drain ditches with fish to 6-0 reported in the past week, mostly on live shiners, but some action on plastics and cranks. Lots of fish moving shallow for spawning. The catfish action is also really turning on with some big flatheads showing. Rafael Terrones, San Bernardino, caught a 45-0 flathead on Saturday and broke off a bigger fish on Sunday. Stan Heinricks, Blythe, landed a 32-0 flathead on a minnow. For more information, call B&B Bait at (760) 921-2248

o ya bill, bluehunter is taking me to lake SAN VICENTE sat. morn to try and nail a big blue in the rain. Last fri he nailed a 50lbr. man i'd love to get one of them hogs

Billy Jo
03-09-2006, 05:34 PM
Dale, that would be a good deal to try to get yourself a big blue. I don't know how you can pass a trip like that up. I would love to make a trip to fish that lake, but a California out of state fishing license is to costly. Get yourself a good rain suit and hit the road. May be your last chance, I hear they are going to drain the lake to make repairs. Good luck

Is there room for another tent in the area? I think it looks good at workfor me to get away fri-sat-sun. If my buddy does not make it (questionable) I will have room for one in my boat. would love to get a big flathead, but would also love to catch some eatin size channels. also looking forward to meeting you all.

where exactly is the gathering taking place?

Billy Jo
03-16-2006, 08:14 AM
How to get to the gathering at the Colorado River in April. This is for the Arizona Boys. Take I-10 west to Blythe Calif. before you get to Blythe you will take HWY 95 north for about 6 miles. You will see a large sign on the right side or road saying Hidden Beachs resort, you will turn right and go about 2 miles and you will run into the entrance to Hidden Beachs resort.

Hey Marc, Come on down, I thank we can find a place for your tent. Always like to meet AZ fishermen. See you at the river.

NOTICE: going to have to change the camp ground location:crying:   .

Earler this week and called hidden beaches talking to the new managers and started to go over the gathering about how to collect the $ for the spots and retold about all the people and TENTS that were going to be there, well with in the last few months they decided not to allow TENTS anymore, unknown to me. And even though i made reservations back in Nov. for three spots and again adding 1 more in mid dec both times telling the person running the front desk that there was going to be a group with tents, there not going to alow us there with tents, I even called the owner and they did care about the resevation or anything:mad:   They didn't care at all NO TENTS and thats it:mad: :crying: I been going there 10+years always been tents 1st time i went it was in a tent. just don't know what there thinking. Even told them i may just move my trailer out thats been there two years, and they said thats fine and I would if I could find anything like it on the river but there no place like it.. So any way I tolled up your nose with a rubber hose or some like that and we would move it some were else:confused:

I think we should have no probem with mayflower riverside county park It is just around the corner from hidden beaches. It mite even cost less and they got group spots on grass that alow tents, billyjo and myself are going to be down there this weekend and we'll get somthing worked out.

sorry about all this at the last minute. man i just think its a bunch bs

Hello All. Riverbud ( Dale) needs to get a head count of the people who thank they will be at the river gathering for sure. We moved to the Mayflower campground, its just around the corner from Hidden Beaches. This is a nice place with a good boat ramp, showers and restrooms. Also good areas to fish from the bank. Store and bait shop close by. Would like to know A.S.A.P. This is a first come campground so we will need to save spots.
Thanks for Your Help.

Hey Riverbud! I been at my place for the last couple of weekends. It has rained on us and the wind has been blowing out there. I stood there for 5 days this last time around. Did okay at Oxbox but Cibola was dead. Only caught a few there. I picked up a 14 ft Jon boat which has more space than my 14 ft duck boat. I may bring a friend but if not I should have room for 2 more memebers. Place me on your list and keep us posted.
EEEeeee doggies! can't wait!

I was wondering how big the tent sites are and do we need to send some money to make sure we get a spot? Can we park next to our tents?
Are there showers at the camp ground? How much are the motel rooms near by?
Thanx!

How ya all doing Billy jo and myself checked out mayflower county camp heres the the info

$16.00 per nite for a nice size spot under trees on grass with a nice little BBQ, ea spot can put 6 people and 2 vehicels.there,s restrooms and showeres. ea spot is 1st come 1st serve there are a totol of 19 spots to be had, I think there was 1 tent there this past sun morn.

if your not staying the nite day use is $2.00

there is a $ 2.00 boat launch fee, not sure if thats 1 time or for each day but ill find out about that. theres no dock so we will have to ancor our boats boat along shore and swim for them (u can run a line to shore to pull the boat to shore also) or trailer them in and out of the water when not using them. boats and trailers are stored in a nearby parking lot and are not counted as a vehicel

I will be there wed nite at my trailer so thurs morn I will go over and pay for 4 spots for thur and fri nites to make sure we have 1 large spot and we can add to that as need be, but somebody else may get between us but i dont think so, we can work the $$$$ out when we get there

for 1.00 per nite Dogs are alowed on a leash, no ground fires, will find out about if we have portble fire pit we can have a fire

there's lots of rooms in town 4 $60.00 of less. If anyone needs a # I will look up one i know of thats just been remodeled next to a good restrant.

I think we will do good here its a nice camp ground with a good launch ramp. only thing were not going to have is the docks and elictric in camp

Hello All, A little Info for those that are bring a boat, be sure you have a good anchor if you plan on fishing the deeper water in the current. There are also some spots with sandy beachs along the river that you can put your boat on and fish if you need too. You can also anchor on back of sandbars and fish drop off. I was down there this pass weekend and had trouble anchor my 14' boat in some spots. Now Dale didn't have any trouble holding his 16' boat, I thank he had an anchor from the Queen Mary. See you in a few weeks.
