Well, The first place I stopped I wasn't there 15min. when the first rod went down, grab the rod made about three cranks and he got off. Put hat rod down and the other rod went down. That 16lb'er made a mess with all three of my lines. About 15min. later the outside rod went horizontal big time. Finally got him in and it weighed 25lbs. I thought, man this is going to be a good day. Never caught another thing. Oh well, it was nice just to get out...

vlparrish
04-25-2006, 11:52 PM
Jason, first of all welcome to the BOC. Second we have caught most of our cats on shad and skipjack, but sometimes we use bluegill and shiners. I never use any store bought bait of any kind or liver and rarely use nightcrawlers.

We hit the river above the greenup dam today and fished an area on a rocky shoreline bordering 30 plus feet of water with a bench coming up into 8 foot. We marked alot of fish sitting on the drop and in the deeper holes but couldnt get any fish to bite . We caught alot of shad this morning and had fresh bait but couldnt find any skips. We also tried up the little sandy about a mile or so in at a outside bend in a deep hole that benches off with alot of timber and brush but didnt have any takers there either . I dont know if we just didnt hit any active fish or if maybe we just wasnt fishing the right kind of areas for this time of year how shallow have you guys been catching the fish out on the main stem of the ohio and what have you been looking for that the fish are holding on ...
vlparrish
05-28-2006, 03:30 PM
Shannon, I haven't caught any big cats lately. I have been catching numbers of small ones. I am mainly fishing fresh cut threadfin shad. I have been targeting any woody structure, like logs, jams and stumps. I will anchor just above the structure and drop a line on each side towards the upriver a little and usually I will put one right in front of it dead center. Most of this structure I am targeting has been shallow, less than ten feet deep. Also no matter how small it looks on the surface I will hit the structure. I caught a nice ten pound flatty from a log that didn't look like much cover. Vern

05-28-2006, 10:56 PM
Thanks vlparrish ill try some more of the same then thats about what we tried the other day i really think we were on some fish they were just inactive we marked alot of bigger fish holding close to structure and on the drops and we actully fished some great looking piles of brush and marked alot of fish around them also . We will just have to get out there and try some more thanks again for the info...

Nice flathead Vern, how much did it weigh?
vlparrish
06-25-2006, 04:05 AM
James, I have been catching a few flats, but most are really small. That is my first big one of the year, but I also have caught a ten and a twenty but that was weeks ago. Slimcat, the flatty in the pic weighed 28 pounds. Not my pb, but a good fish anyway. Vern
Catfishhunter
06-25-2006, 03:01 PM
Vlparrish, I went last night and only caught a 3lb. flattie.Had one good take down while I was putting my rods out and by the time I got to it it let go. Might have been a gar, who knows.
vlparrish
07-03-2006, 03:07 AM
The Ohio is starting to fire up again, I suggest you guys hit the water. Vern
SkiMax
07-04-2006, 03:46 PM
the flatties are slamming in the Ohio. We have been catching alot of fish in the 8-15 pound range with a couple in the mid 20's. Most of ours have been on live creek chub, they have been hammerin' them. They have also been biting on live shad, but not as well as chubs. good luck! cya saturday vern?
slimcat
07-04-2006, 05:52 PM
Vern, SkiMax, are you guys tightlining or are you using clickers. The other night I was having problems hooking into fish using the clicker. They may have been gar though.
MadKater
07-04-2006, 08:06 PM
Demetrius,I had that same problem a few days back while fishing with my dad,we ended up turning off the clickers and just allowing it to free spool,i took a peice of toilet paper and wraped it around my line and reeled it back into the spool and disengaged the spool, when i fish would pull out the paper i would pick up the rod and let him have as much line as i thought he needed, engage the spool hammer back and hed be hookd....i cant say this was the reason we started catching fish since we only caught 3 and missed 2 doing this and they where biting kinda slow anyway but i like to think it worked lol.
slimcat
07-04-2006, 09:52 PM
Madkater, that definetly is one way to wrap up things.LOL. I have never thought about trying that. The clicker just is not working for me. Maybe saturday night I will bring some TP.LOL. We will definelty need it if J.W. and D.H. are around .
vlparrish
07-05-2006, 03:00 AM
Demetrius, I am a big fan of tightlining. I have several reels equipped with clickers, but it is rare that I ever use them.Besides it would be really hard to use a clicker on the drift, which is my favorite way to fish during post spawn. Max, no I won't be at the tourney this Saturday. I think I am going to hit the Henderson Gathering. Vern

alright thanks vern. i am gonna go drifting tonight now that i got the boat and rod holders to do it  . are the skippies running your way? i have caught some in rising sun. about 4 a night is my average but they are bigger, running 10-16 inches. man the blues havent been able to resist some fresh cut skippie
vlparrish
07-14-2006, 04:29 PM
Max, yea. that's what we caught all our fish on is fresh cut skips. Catching the larger ones on sabikis right now, but I like the small ones hooked whole better. They seem to like the heads best. Vern

07-16-2006, 02:28 AM
I got out on the Ohio this evening. After eight hours of hard fishing I ended up with three cats and a few missed oppurtunities. All three cats were flatheads and they were 4 pounds, 7 pounds, and 25 pounds. I caught them on cut skipjacks and live shad, the smaller two came on cutbait and the large one came on a live shad about 8 inches long hooked threw the lips. Vern

These flatheads right now are a blast. I've been going a few hours every night for the past few days and burning them up, caught 4 last night, and had a good one get off and one broke a line. Live shad seem to be the bait of choice, but we caught 2 last night on small cut carp.

Vern, I am going to have to hook up with you guys, evidently I don't know what I'm doing, I fished the Ohio from Cox's Park up to the Trimble county Power Plant and have not caught anything but small channels & small flatties, 2 years ago I caught some decent ones but no hogs. Everything I caught this year has come from shallow water along rocky banks, although I did get a nice run in deep water Saturday night, I was fishing a 5 inch bluegill on large circle hook, the pole got bumped gently for about five minuites before the fish took it, as I started reeling the pressure just let go, but the fish did manage to take by bait, I guess it could have been a gar, but it got by blood pumping anyways. What kind of places are you guys catching the big ones??
vlparrish
08-03-2006, 05:32 PM
Travis, we are catching most of our cats this time of year in deeper water. Look for deep water and ledges in outside bends and straight stretches where creeks come out. There is usually a deep water eddy just below the point of a creek channel. Fish right in the deep water in the hole or at the current break, also look for them right against the ledge on the bank side of the eddy. There is some great water located close to the Westport ramp. Vern

Six live shad went into the water and six cats came out. My friend Carl, his fiance' Sheila and I went fishing on the Ohio tonight. We caught 2 channel cats around five or six pounds and four flatheads. Carl caught a flatty around 8 pounds and Sheila caught the other three, a 4 pounder, 18 pounder and 35 pounder. It was her B-day and she had a blast. Vern

D.H. gave me a nice "weekend off" by having me go down and ride along with him. I'm usually at the helm of my own rig and it was a treat to be able to relax and ride shotgun. That fish was a real sleeper until I got him alongside the boat; that's when he woke up and gave me quite a fight on a short line. Thanks Eric...W
