Scoped out the river today.. im planning on taking a trip up there to fish off the bank this week. boat ramp is open NO DOCK . river is down and CLEAR. haven't decided what to use for bait yet.. any suggestions? haven't fished the river with such a cold temp. but found a good wind break just inside a jetty with a nice Big Pool that i should be able to pull something out of.. if not i can always make my way out the jetty to get out in the current and fish the drop offs. anyone have any suggestions?

I would try to find some sort of bait fish. I don't know if you can try to catch some shad. It might be tough this time of year. Get some cut bait, best bet!!

Sorry guys, just think your crazy to go catfishing in this weather/temp.
look at it like this.. i ve been bow hunting for deer sitting in a tree stand with wind chills below -30 buddled to keep warm yet enough i can still draw my bow. to get that certain buck ive trapped in worse conditions because the law says i have to check the traps every 24 hrs. ive sat on the ice at the lake for hours to just admire the scenery with nothing but a grub on my line. Its NOT the weather or the game your after that stops a angler/hunter from being there when he/she should its the angler/hunter their self that doesnt accept natures full spectrum that misses out on the experience of a lifetime.

its a new weekend! friday there was ice comeing down the river :sad2: so i thought about going to the lake and doing some ice fishing :0a18:but it was so nice out at the river i couldnt leave so i kicked back and just let the ice flow enjoying the peace and quiet. and when i couldnt take it any more i sacrificed a bit of line just to say i fished but i was happy just to be there.
Sunday ill be out there again! itll be 50! and ill wet that line once again hopefully this time there will be fish on when it comes back in.

What is the water temp at Neb City? I am new here. I tried fishing the MO from the bank at Riverview Marina in January and 2 weeks ago off wing dikes but never got a bite. Used, shrimp, worms, and livers. I saw the water level was headed up, need to get the jon boat motor fixed!

i havent fished the river from a boat. dont have one and since i started fishing it last year i havent managed to hit the river at the same time as those i know that have a boat. the marina isnt the only place there in Ne city you can fish off the bank. you can get to the bank south of the power plant off minimum maintenance roads. and north of the city too in certain places. check out google earths satellite to find a good place.
as far as the temp i dont have a fish finder but a good place to find out the info on the river is.. http://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=06807000 .. this will tell you just about anything about the water you want to know.. right now they havent got the temp stick back in the water yet tho . they pull it in the winter. hope this helps

Thanks for the info! I was pumped to go out tonight and tomorrow but doesn't look like the weather wants me too. Are those access points north of and south of Neb City I see on Google Earth ok with the farmers in that area? Don't want to piss anyone off. If you could tell me specifically which ones on a PM that would be wonderful so the whole world doesn't know:)

Well i am planning on ok hoping to get out to the river there in Neb City some time between thursday which is supposed to be the nicest and monday. thought maybe id use some of Trevors scouting and JRs info to see if the kids and i cant reel in a fish or two.
waters about 40-42 now. i know still alittle cool. and the water is just at 7.5 on the gage. But JR said they were opening the gates so by this weekend it should be up.. right JR? and with the Scouting that Trevor did Thanks buddy.. we should be able to get in the warmer water just south of the power plant.
Does any one have any suggestions on when and where and with what we should or could fish with or at? Anyone want to come along? We are bank fishers..we dont have a boat sorry.. but always enjoy ourselves and company.

Looks like itll be friday the 21st of march. where not too sure yet.. south of the plant or north of the marina im thinking. .. what in the heck will they be biting on:confused2:??? ill get some liver some dough some shrimp chubs what ever cut bait i can find.
lets hope the river will be on our side. its at 7.5 and rising just like good Ole JR said it would. now all thats left is to follow Trevors' scouting directions.

Good Luck! Friday looks good, full moon, front coming in and water should be coming up. I looked up by Gavin's thought this morning and didn't see any rise yet up there? I would go south of the plant, and I would go to Walmart or Paap's and get worms, shrimp and dough bait. With the worms maybe you can get a carp to bite for some cut bait. Worms always come through when nothing else will, especially those green worms you dig up down by the river that stink to high heaven for cats! I am dying to fish down there. Let me know what time and where you go and I might try to slip down, you can teach me some tricks:wink: I see on here the St. Joe, MO guys have been catching some. In Fisherman says that around noon is the prime time to fish Friday by the way... Either way thanks for credits and good luck!

Went out sat to a little feeder to the platte. Only had worms and stink as nobody had chubs or goldfish. Its still too cold for me to seine, and I couldnt get anything in the cast net. We were getting hits on the worms, but no takers. So I threw on a small j hook to find out what it was. Goldeyes I think. caught 3 one pounders, and a 2 pound buffalo. No cats yet this year. The water temp was hitting a little over 50 in the shallows close to bank. Should be picking up soon. At least I now have some cut bait in the freezer.

Fished at Nebraska City, south of Nebraska City and down at Indian Cave on the big MO. Tried worms and shad sides. Caught 2 small cats on worms and a drum. Nothing decent! Feeder creek produced the small cats and outside bend hole produced the drum. Tough day, lot of wind.

04-15-2008, 02:10 AM
Listening to folks that know a lot more than me 50 degrees is the go wild point. But this year is way below normal temps ( we should be mid 60's by now.) Cats are hungry, can't hold off forever before they need to eat. Couple warm days w/o cold wind and I think they should start picking up, not crazy but a lot better:) The river here was on a steady temp rise up at about a degree a day with temps in the 50's, it won't take long for it step up especially in the shallows, I would look to fishing in the evenings. Flathead hunter beat me or approve this advice:)

I was truckin over the river bridge today and saw some maniac standing out on the Iowa side of the MO river, just downstream of the bridge. Was it one of you fools on here? It seemed pretty chilly to be out there this morning, but then again, it did look like he might have had a fire going right next to him. If it was one of you guys on here, let us know how you did!

The guy to talk to about crappie fishing in the area is Paap. I believe he has the world record white crappie hanging on the wall in there. I don't know how forthcoming he is with tips, but it is his business! If you don't mind a little bit of a drive, Burchard is a great place for crappie, bass and bluegill. Or the lakes south of Lincoln. I prefer Stagecoach, but a lot of guys have good luck for craps at Wagon Train. I am sure there are a lot of farm ponds closer that you can get a good crappie bite at as well. If you find any, let me know too:wink:

The cats have been hitting great up here in niobrara on the MO. Last weekend we went out and me and a buddy pulled in 12 in two hours (nothing over 4 pounds but still cats). We were fishing a side channel about 6ft deep with minnows and crawlers. I got lines out about 10 of them and usually pull in about 6 a day (checking them twice a day) ranging from 3 to 16 pounds off of bullhead chunks. The cold weather has slowed them down a little but i'm looking forward to anouther spike as soon as the weather warms up. Still waiting for the flatheads to start running but it will pry be a couple of weeks. I found that most of the cats already have eggs in them. A little early isn't it???
