Dan, you are a beast. Much reps to you as you seem to be logging a ton of time on the water. Solo, with friends, good weather and bad.........your out there. I've concluded that you either live in houseboat on the river or you've got just the 'perfect' situation with home life (i.e. dream job and lady friend) that allows you to get out there.

Forget the fishing tips for now, I want to know your secret for getting on the water. I can't catch squat if I can't soak a line.

I can't catch squat wetting my lines!!! I'm going to have to start bringing home some fish, or at least some pictures. My wife is starting to get suspicious. :cool2: LOL!
No, she's pretty cool about me fishing. She thinks I'm crazy going out to the river in the middle of December. But, she accepts it.
I guess my secret is... TELL her you're going fishing. Don't ASK if you can go fishing. I must say that I can't be responsible for injuries, divorces, or any other misfortunes from using the above mentioned advice. :smile2::smile2:

I have NO idea how this ended up as the first post in this thread!!

Hey Rat, I am thinking about going today. If the fog lets up early enough. Let me know if you want to go.

Damn, I just got a chance to get on here, sorry Bob I missed ya! I wouldn't have been able to make it out there today anyhow, I picked up my baby girl yesterday. Keep me in mind the next time you head out, I'm on vacation until January 2nd, I can possibly make it out there the 26, and during the day of the 27, my number is 314-568-0002.

Dude, I need to introduce you to waypoint #207... Just a stones throw from Maple Island… My transducer was wearing out and finally couldn’t handle the stress and split… :ooooh: since then I’ve had to rely on already marked honey holes… plus they’re places that I know hold fish… It’s your old stomping ground and a good cure for and will give you the winter blues… Give me a pm and let’s work thru our schedules and make it happen.

Hey Mike, boy I'd sure like to get out there with ya, I'm on vacation until January 2nd, I can possibly make it out there the 26, and during the day of the 27, my number is 314-568-0002.

Rat, sorry for the snub. It's just personal.

That's alright Greg, I'll just add you to my list!!!:angry:

Mine says #2 and look at the time, I'm in the future!

Hello my fellow Missouri Catfishing Brothers.

Darryl (AKA SkipEye), Joe (not yet a fellow BOCer) and I (AKA RIVER-RAT) launched from down town St Louis at approximately 0945 hrs on Wednesday 12/19/2007 in a feable attempt to catch some of these "winter time blues" that I keep reading about. I had some SkipJacks from the Freeze Fest Ryan (AKA stlcatman) and I attended on Monday 12/17/2007, in which we ended up as two frozen skunks! :smile2:

Anyway, we decided to go ahead and try to catch fresh bait to accompany the frozen skipjacks. We managed to catch some asain carp and several SkipEyes. After that we headed to the first hole. About a half hour after anchoring, Joe caught a lonely little channel cat. Darryl has the single evidentiary photo of that catch! Long story short, that was the only fish brought to the boat all day! We scoured and surveyed quite a few wing-dykes in a 22 mile stretch of river. THAT'S RIGHT, WE WENT APPROXIMATELY 22 MILES DOWN RIVER AND CAUGHT A SINGLE DINK A$$ CHANNEL CAT!

I don't have the greatest electronic fishfinder on earth but it will show me once in awhile fish beneath the boat, not Wednesday, it didn't show ANY!! We couldn't find any fish! I feel like I'm back at square one. This whole "winter" fishing has proved to be quite challenging for me. I would be more than happy to pull up anchor after anchor (all day) for anyone that knows how to find/fish for the blues this time of year. I can read "How To's" all day long but I learn better by practicing "hands-on"! Sooooooooooo, if you don't want to get your hands cold from that nasty, cold, wet and extremely heavy anchor, I'll do it and make short work of it too!

I went out to Alton last night after you and Skippy fished. I was only out from about 6 to 9:30ish. The only place that I found anything on the electronics was a 60 foot hole. There were some arches about 35 feet along the wall to that hole. Only problem was, it was right in a stretch of river with big a$$ ice sheets floating down. There were sections of ice about 2 or 3 inches thick, and about 8' by 8' square. I set one line out to see how it was. And it was only out for about 10 minutes till I was sick of listen to my drag scream from mini icebergs getting caught on it. I tried a few other spots out of the ice flow with no luck. :sad2:
Time doesn't move by to fast when you're alone, it's dark, it's cold, and the only sounds are ice chunks hitting the boat. And my stomach was growling from not eating any supper. I guess if I would have had some food I could have sat longer while enjoying the aroma of PePe.
Hopefully I can find a break in the rain sometime Saturday during the daylight hours for some more skunkeness.

C'mon, Dan is much to young to have attained the Zen Master level of Brownie point acquisition. Much less the art of successful deployment of said Brownie Points!

Have you met Dan? It could be that his wife just wants him out of her hair!:smile2::roll_eyes: couldn't resist!

I fished all the time when I first got my boat but my wife has adapted to the game well and it has since become increasingly difficult for me as a mere Brownie Point understudy. I have much to learn fellow grasshopper!

Heathen children (boys seem to work the best) are the secret to much fishing time. I could go to the Amazon for a week as long as I take at least one kid. If she has the choice of being stuck at the house with us 3 or getting rid of some or all of us for extended periods, what do you think she's gonna do? I swear I don't influence the boys in any way to act in a manner that might influence Shawna's decisions, either. My genes took care of that part nicely..........:ooooh:

Well a friend and I hit Weldon Spring yesterday. Took forever to get down the river in that fog. Finally about 10:30 we started fishing. Now i started in places I know have produced this year. We had skipjack, shad, and skipeye. All were frozen. All we were getting were pecker bites. Finally a little above St. Charles I went to a dyke that did real well last winter. After about a half hour we were getting ready to move and my partner caught about a 3 pound channel cat. On the way back up I wheeled in a dyke that caught my eye and we got a blue abut a pound and a half. We did not get skunked. The water was 37 degrees but still dirty and falling slow. Dont have a clue why we didnt do better. I marked fish in a lot of places but couldnt get them to bite.

I can't believe you drove all the way to the Arctic just to go catfishing!

I fished for about 2 hours yesterday, and while there were quite a bit of logs and debris floating downriver, I didn't see any icebergs out there. Air temp of 34 and 20 mph winds blowing upriver (complete with whitecaps) made me wuss out early.

Hey did anyone consider that the blues stacked up and the commercial guys scooped them up early.. Or that they are changing their ways because of commercial nets taking over their holes during the winter.. Just a thought..

NANNER
12-23-2007, 11:25 AM
The commercial guys do put a hurtin on the fish Harold thats for sure, but there are still some nice schools out there that manage to avoid the numerous nets. They do get tough to find but when you do it can get crazy. I wish one of the bob members would find one of those 'crazy' days. This place could use some positive fishing reports to say the least. :smile2:

Tkyhunter and I went friday she got a little cold while we were running down river. We fished about five different dikes using live shad. she caught a five pound blue on the second dike we fished. We managed some dink bites at the back end of another dike, don't know what they were but we couldn't catch them. We fished about three hours with only one fish caught.

Harold, I'm not sure if this will help, but the Rat swears by it. I won't try it myself, but he's insist that watching the Justin Timberlake concert (Live at Madison Square Garden) over and over is a cure for any ailment. He tells me you can find it on HBO....he must have recorded it. Apparently, that was the only thing that got him through the sniffles he had this August. I like to think that the lady in his life put him on it, but I'm not so sure anymore. That guy has a feminine side raging as his biceps are big.

Rat, I'm sorry to let the cat of the bag........but anything to help the brethren.

Got 2 bulkheads cut out as well as my combination casting deck extension/ storage locker top. Not a straight line on that boat, so I've had to do a lot of math and stuff....:ooooh:

UPS hosed me and didn't show up, but I'm almost finished with the wood parts and I picked up 2 quarts of flat gray epoxy, so I may blow some paint on it this evening if I feel froggy. Hopefully the UPS guy brings my stuff tomorrow and I can make a BIG mess (I think if I do it right between the foam and epoxy I can make a mess that will take me days to get off of the garage floor and myself)

IT IS, if you can find them. Heck, If I had a boat, I'd probably be out there. Until I joined the BOC, I never really had a drive to fish this time of year. I was always in the woods. But when rabbit season ended, (February) I always started fishing hard. I've always done pretty good in February.

theonecatfishbob
12-26-2007, 10:18 PM
For the record, this has been the worst cold water period I have seen. That includes the first winter I started fishing. I dont know yet what the problem is. I know on the Missouri bait has been all but impossible to find. I think it may have something to do with it. None of the holes I caught fish in the last 2 winters are producing. Need to do more research, probably in a different stretch of river.

I like to think that the lady in his life put him on it, but I'm not so sure anymore. That guy has a feminine side raging as his biceps are big.

Rat, I'm sorry to let the cat of the bag........but anything to help the brethren.

Well Greg, I told you that in complete confidence. I thought for sure that after you had had success with the process you would keep it under wraps.

Well you know what this means don't you? You're cut off!! Out of the circle of trust

I tried the entrance to the hot water discharge. Nothing there. That screenshot was about 7 miles down south though. Just above the Clarke bridge.
I got my little nibbles at the hole above the 3 docking thingamajigs by the power plant.

Sorry to hear about your luck Dan, I'm heading out in the morning to give it a shot, going to Melvin Price, hope to be in the water by 0930 hrs.

Here is a question for those of you that have experience with the "winter time blues", does the barometer still have merit on the feeding habits? I noticed that today it was on a steady rise.

Dan, I know where you were at by the bridge.. The guys at the bait shop said that area is good in early spring..
That goes to show you the difference in fish finders, my cheap cuda 168 didn't show any holes up there just different depths with gradual changes. I need to look that area over up there with your fishfinder..

I guess an attachment with that last post would have made more sense.
Think I may have had to switch over and try for a big walleye after seeing that pic, but thats just me this time of year I find it hard to get that thought out, hopefully after this years meeting and some PIG Chasing with some of yall, I can stay focused on them winter cats  Oh by the way, I'll have a good price on some ice fishing equipment in about a week LOL!

Did ya find any descent bait fish today? you would think the little rain we been getting would get some of them fish "on the move" after all the low water this year.

You think they are walleye? What makes you think that? I was looking for catfish, so I just kinda told myself that thats what they are. LOL. I'm wanting to do some walleye fishing soon. Walleye is my favorite kind of fish. I was going to head down below the dam and try for a while. I also heard that they bite pretty good on Carlyle around february.

I was using frozen skipjack. But I did make a dozen casts with the net at the discharge of the power plant. I only caught 2 shad. But I didn't really try to hard. I just wanted something to put on one of the poles other than skippies.

Just the way the pic is staged in a suspended type setting, with bait in the area, nothing seems to be set they are in a classic ambush set from middle to cover up and down the ledge, seems to be positioned where the current would be "backed up" from hitting the bottom of the hole in a heavy current I would be looking higher up??? I don't know what they are, but it just looks like it could easily be a walleye school as they would be in a tight pattern which should give you a bigger "blip" or "sweep" and is obviously a strong reading, and 3-5 fish almost on top of each other should be a strong reading, and it looks as if there may be 3-4 good groups on your shot, as opposed to 3 or 4 giant fish???? But again, I am the type of fisherman that when I locate a school I can not just target one type, I have to catch atleast one so I know what it is..LOL! either that or drop the camera down and peak around. That is some thing else that is a great tool, just find fish save your screen shot and identify them with the under water camera, then you will have definite reference to save....... yes most of my time is on the Kaskaskia but I would think that the patterns would be pretty close to the same in any river, and most lakes for that matter. Wife always says I spend more time "playing" than fishing, but I like to see whats down there ya know........ Have ya ever looked at Dr. Depth? it is software that you record your screen info and load to it then it makes 3-d images from your info. OK, enough babble for this round.

Yes that is usually a good time, but right know is also  I don't know about the spill way at Carlyle right now tho, as the either still are or have just stopped running the commercial nets below it to "remove the carp" but this time of year you can usually bet on "the slope" either from a hump or a hole, or channel edge, or or or LOL trolling slow...... Dang-nabbit, now I am ready to go look for some eye's.

Randy,

You have got me all fired up now. Not only do I have to peruse through your 600+ posts to see what other information I can extract, but I have to convince the wife to let me get out on the river.

I love the electronics banter.....if you have screen shots to share, I would love to see them.

Geeesh buy the time I get them done something new will be on market . She has been copying some of them for me in her spare time, just a pain in the arse to go from tape to disc to card, LOL but slowly getting it, I think :ooooh: cross eyed and blind I think tho.........

As far as the lakes if it don't get cold real soon it is looking alot like last year no ice to walk out on......... sooooo Mr. Heater in the boat i guess. Just try is all ya can do, if ya have a bad memory like me, then write notes.
