It looks like my plans to make a trip to Yuma to meet with Eric F. and purchase his 'yak are developing a life of their own.
Seems as though a number of persons from some of the other forums I participate on have been looking for some excuse to visit that area and have found this to be as good a reason as any to go so we may have a mini event there that weekend.
Of course from my point of view all are welcome and encouraged to join us to share brotherhood in our sport and swap information and our best lies with each other. While I, like Gary, primarily target catfish, I also enjoy catching striper, pan fish of all types and even the occasional black bass. So if you feel like joining us gather up your gear and head out that week, I'll try and post contact information in the coming week.
Maybe I can find someone local to host an information Thread.

Tom if I'm reading your post right you'll be in the Yuma area over the weekend of the 13-14 of October, right? If so I'll be in the Picacho area that same weekend. I've got to get my river fix in before there's too much work to run away. I stay in my boat through out the entire time I'm there. Granted there are those "head" breaks yet most of the time I've always got a line in the water. Let me know if you'll head up to Picacho.

Depends on the river conditions. I'll be there with BayRunner Ray and he will have his boat. We wil most likely put in at Squaw lake or Fishers landing, that's up to Ray and I know he likes to fish up river when the water is there.

Tom, sisiter finally called me, and she's not planning on coming here until around the 19th. so, i'm open the weekend of 13th. will get with joey soon about it.
a thought. if you get that yak first thing, we could put it in back yard if you'd like if you don't want to leave at campsite. up to you. or in garage.

Thanks Gary, I'll have to talk with Eric about when we can get together. Didn't I read that you and he went out fishing not long ago?
Did you invite him to join the BOC?
We have a few other Marines on the board some from Pendleton on the beach here.
Ray has hopes of fishing upriver if there is enough water to run in. I would like to fish some of the water between Fishers and Squaw to see if it's productive and you are the go to guy for cats in that area.
Before you buy that new fish finder you might want to check out the ones that Ray has on his boat when we are down there. Nothing like seeing one in action to decide if it suits your needs.

Id be right there with you guys if I was still stationed in yuma had some really good flathead holes and bass holes there. Some of the best fishing of my life. Im going back there in March to do some bass fishing and see if the flatheads are hitting but for me they really didnt start hitting really well until April or May. Good luck to you guys ive seen pictures of those big flats around where your fishing at the bait store by Martinez lake.

Yeah, it's blowing a little here now and supposed to blow pretty good all weekend. I was just checking out the weather site.
Got to PM Ray and get him to look, he wanted to hit the salt sunday for a few hours but it looks like it might be a little rough.

Yea .... we are going to cancel the salt trip.... wind at 27 ks, and with the swell thats is out there.....even north of Santa Barbara its blowing.... take til tuesday to flatten out the ocean .... Oh well.... onto the next week end... the low pressure should move on to the east where they dont need it either.
Even the Delta is having some 10-15 mph winds....

I know I'll be fishin out of the Picacho park area the weekend of the new moon. Whether it's windy or not, Catfish eat. As far as navigating, or better put negotiating, the river during the fall I can't see the issue. I've never had a problem reading the lower Colorado. The current slick is usually always easy to pick up, even in spite of the sun angle or wind chop. Granted in low light a sand bar or two might slide out farther into the main channel yet blowing a quartering wake across it determines it's lip and depth. Not to matter. Thursday will be the day to make bait. Possibly some bluegill on a fly for fun along with a backwater bass. Then it's those new moon dark nights! Made for a love affair with a finned creature. Real Mermaids have whiskers.

Tom and I should be leaving Thur to hit the All American on the way into Yuma.... and then up the river and out on the water at Fisher landing.... can't wait to get back down there.... last time I could barely walk and did not want to have to do that on some of the shallow areas.... Hope the waters still being sent down at good levels....

The wind on the river may make for an uncomfortable time but wouldn't cancel a trip unless it was blowing real hard.
On the salt water it can kill you.
Rays 19' aluminum boat does fine on the big water when conditions are not to rough but with the wind blowing onshore and the wind swells at 4' it would be almost impossible to fish from and very uncomfortable.
My 24' sport-fisher with its deep hull would ride that and still allow you to fish as it has almost 3' of free-board at the stern but it would still be a rough very tiring ride.
gtbait
10-06-2007, 12:49 PM
I can agree with that Tom! An onshore wind strong enough to straighten a flag, an outgoing tide and ground swells over 3-4 feet and you often have more line out of the water than in. I had a 12ft Avon wearing a 25 hp Johnson that I would use out of Long Beach and Newport a couple of times a week. That "airboat" was safe enough yet there were afternoons I stayed inside the harbor and fished docks and oil islands. Granted it did find it's way to Catalina on a few trips. It was a great boat for a young man without a lot of responsibility or fear. She drooled for small craft warnings and the wake of a tanker coming through the breakwater openings. That girl would even surf the shoreline troughs outside of Newport when the waves would reach 6 feet. Alas, the time came to ,.,.,grow up. This is a given though on any river condition,,,,the CARP are always friendly.

Eric is coming by today and we're gonna talk about it. told him he can use my extra 6gal tank since he only has a 6 gal one in boat. now to figure what to bring.

Ray and I did go out fishing Santa Monica Bay yesterday. The predicted wind never arrived so it was fairly calm, not a lot of fish though I caught a bunch of dinks and Ray caught a legal size Salmon Grouper. We also caught 6 small macs which we will be bringing along with some sardines.

Gary I got to ask you, Is that launch ramp at Squaw Lake at the base of Senators Wash Dam or over by what used to be called Imperial Oasis?
We used to call that entire area behind Imperial Squaw Lake and there was no launch on the west side, the road ended at the dam.
tofish
10-08-2007, 12:56 PM
Tom, at the base of the dam. if you drive out on the dirt dam to end of paved road, look to your right. bingo, there it is. road down is at very end of dam. it's all pavement for RV's, and dirt for tents or if not crowded, can put tent up next to RV. i'm gonna look for url to a satelite few of site for you.
it's across river from hidden shores.

Okay Gary, that was what I saw on Google Earth. I just wasn't sure which side of the river you were refering to. Like I said none of that was there when I lived in Yuma.
Now Ray can decide if he wants to camp there or Fishers. I don't care myself, ones just as good as the other.

Gary, Thanks for the link to the view.... OK with me to meet you guys there.... I had thought of going home via Blythe...... the only concern is.... can I camp (dry) on the land point to the east, and how far is the store/bait shop..... It looks as there is building on the point area..... I like Fishers because of the avialability of a slip for a nite if needed, Can I pull the boat up on the sand near the point area where we might camp....

Just got back from the Yuma/ Az boys get together with Gary (tofish). Gary did a great job of finding us a great camp spot with a view, and met with Plumbertom1 and myself on Sat am for a camp out on the Colorado River. Gary showed us some new fishing water that was also new stuff for Joey and Eric that joind us.
I let the way through the sand bars as we headed up river some 30 miles to some great Flathead water. Before setting out for the night, we had a rather nice shore dinner of sausage, steak from the mini barbeque and chips to munch on while the younger boys were busy catching stripers off the shore where we pulled in for the dinner.
Here are some of the pics that I took of this mini gathering.

sgt fishslayer (joey) met me at house at 0500 and we drove out to squaw lake to meet with plummertom, gilmafam and ericf sat morning. tom already had one flattie on the stringer from friday nite.
had a cup of coffee and headed upriver in three boats. took them into the ca channel to make bait and fish a little. if i remember right, believe ray caught his channel cat back in there also.
then we headed upriver. stopped a few places to catch some more gills and try for cats but made picacho state park with no problems. stopped upriver a few miles where ray bbq'd a great shore lunch for all of us, and we all kinda got to really visit and get to know each other. joey and eric played with the little dinky bass and stripers, plus some smallies for awhile while tom, ray and i shot the bull about everything that fishermen lie (i mean talk about).
then fished our way down river aways, to find a really good back cove to tie off for the night.
first flathead in went to eric. about 15 lbs. then later tom started some action. the current died down some, so bites did too. around midnight, i got a 12lbr, then kinda passed out in that freezing floor of boat. :tire: joey was giving it all he had, but the fish catfishgods just weren't watching over him this trip.
next morning, ray heated water up for instant coffee and made house calls around the boats. (thank you ray!) then we fished and run our way downriver to squaw lake. pulled out of water about 1:00 sunday afternoon, and came back to house. i brought tom and rays fish back here to clean since lake had no cleaning station there, and they swung by house on way home.
all together, a great weekend, great people, and only thing i'd do different next time is a warmer bag and padding for underneath.
i didn't take any real good pictures, but will take off camera later and post what i have. ray took some, some hopefully he will post them.

What a feeling sitting at one fishing hole all nite and watching and listening...... coyotes, Jack Asses braying, beaver flopping their tails cause we were in their "Flathead hole"...... what a nite.... very long...... had to wake Plumbertom1 up several times so that he could pull in his fish.... (had the hearing aid turned off), and we traded off on who could snore louder to keep the other awake...
Oh.... by the way, Personal best by Eric with his 14.4 lb flat.... way to go "Newby".....

Got to Rays house around 10:30 AM Thursday morning after Leaving my house 30 miles away at 8 AM (Man, I love L.A.). Anyway we loaded up the gear and hit the Highway 91 across N. O.C. and through Riverside to the 60 and out to the I-10 to the 118 past the Salton Sea ( every time I drive past there I get depressed thinking about what a great fishery has been allowed to die) through Brawley and caught the 111 down to I-8 into Winterhaven where we turned up S26 to Imperial state recreation area and Squaw Lake.
We pulled into the camp ground at Squaw and found Garys friend Ray, the camp host having a visit at his camper and he set us up with a camping place just a few feet from the shore line where we could beach the boat.
We launched the boat and made camp for the night.
In the morning I made chorizo and egg burritos while Ray got the boat readied and then we hit the river.
We ventured up the river a good 25 miles, well past Picacho State Park, Stopping here and there to fish for sunfish to use for bait at night then went back to camp at Squaw and made up some sandwiches for a little after dark meal.
Back out on the River we stopped at a spot that Gary suggested and set up to fish with our gills an sunfish. After a couple of hours there I was bit by a determined fish and boated a nice little flat head about 6-7 Lbs. It ate a sunfish that looked like it wasn't able to swallow but after a while on the stringer, it did manage to get it down. some time later Ray caught a little flat head that was maybe 1 lb which was released.
After moving back down river to the entrance to Squaw Lake and setting up there right at the edge of the current, we fished a while longer. Ray hooked up and brought to the boat a flat head that, to me, looked to be the twin o the one that I had caught but we didn't get to make the comparison because Ray tried to lift it into the boat with his 15 lb leader, big error, snap went his leader and away went his flattie. It was close to 11 pm and we were planning an early start so we called it a night and headed in.
Just before sunrise we got up and made coffee and cold cereal for breakfast Loaded all our gear for the day and overnight on the river. By this time Gary (tofish), Joey (sgt. fishslayer) and Eric (Eric F.) had got their boats in the water and were prompting us to get going. Ray and I may be Old but we're slow.
We headed up river to what Gary named the "California Channel" and pulled into a side lake (no name) and fished for sun fish loading a number of baits into the live well, mostly smaller fish.
Pulling back into the Ca. Channel we went upriver a little ways and stopped to fish in one of Garys spots where Ray caught a channel cat about 4 Lbs on a small sunfish. We moved further up the same Channel with Gary showing us places here and there to fish where he has done well.
then on up the main river With stops along the way to try for more bait.
We went past the launch ramp at Picacho St. Park and pulled ashore at Carriso boat in camp for a BBQ of sausage and steak with chips and dip to snack on while Ray cooked.
It was late afternoon by now so we started looking for a place to fish for the night and after a few tries at places that didn't fit the bill for one reason or another we found a place that seemed promising so we set up with our boats a short distance apart (close enough to talk without shouting) and began to fish in earnest. Shortly after dark Eric hooked up with a Flattie that was about 14 lbs, a little while late I got one, we went that way through the night with a fish now and again and snoozing in between. Ray and I having a contest to see who could snore the loudest, but I cheated, I shut off my hearing aid so in order to wake me Ray had to reach over and shake me, which he did a few times when my clicker started making noise I couldn't hear.
Any way through the night we got 6 flat heads in that spot the largest being Garys at about 20lbs (way to go) and the smallest one of mine at around 3lbs. Not a bad nights fishing for one spot.
At sunrise Ray set up his little stove and we moved over to Garys boat for morning mud. Once that was over we moved back down river fishing any spots that seemed like they might be good, but outside of more sun fish nothing was caught.
Ray and I had to make tracks back to the big city so we got off the river about 2 PM and ran into Yuma to Garys house where him and Eric were working hard to clean my fish for me (Thanks, Guys, in case I forgot to tell you, I really appreciated that) and to pick up the Kayak from Eric, (which was ostensibly the reason for this trip to Yuma).
After picking up my prepared filets and tying down the yak onto Rays boat we headed back, crossing the sand dunes west of Yuma on I-8 at the time of day that they are well defined by shadow from the late afternoon sun. The drive home was uneventful and we got to Rays house around 10 pm. loaded my stuff into my truck cap and I drove home in light traffic.

ok my turn. got up @ 0330 and got truck loaded to meet up with gary. got to gary's house right at 0500 and loaded up boat, grabbed some hot mud, and took off. met ray, tom, and eric at around 0700 and headed up river. caught a mess of gills and went after some kitties. stopped at a nice little hole and tom caught a nice cannel on a live gill. went up past picacho and had lunch (which was a gourmet feast that ray and tom cooked up) and i procedded to catch 3 little smallmouth while fishing for gills. headed up river and caught a few more gills for bait, set up for the night and apparently eric had on perfume or something cause he got the action from the big flatties. my luck just wasnt with me i guess. i think i am going to tell my wife its because i had the wrong kind of rods and i need about 500 dollars to buy new ones.
all in all it was an awesome time. i got to meet new people, share some knowledge, and learn alot of new tricks. if i could do it all again i would. i cant wait until the next time.

dameon. don't give up on them this winter. they are there and will bite. just slow down things. hard to explain kinda, but everything slows down to about 1/3 the pace during the winter time. i've had time where i've had to hand feed line a few feet at a time for 20 minutes before they'd feel solid. think positive and will do good in time.

Thanks Gary. I plan to hit the lower Colorado when I get back. Most of the canals that I fish (like the "main gravity") are down way low (water level-wise) in the winter...only thing though is that I think that I might have to have a Ca. permit to fish the lower Colorado?

No, Dameon, if you fish from the Az, bank of the river your Az. fishing license is good. If you fish from a boat or the Ca. bank you will need to add a Ca. river stamp to your license. they cost about $3.50.
That applies any where the river forms the boundary between Ca. and Az. from just north of Needles to Algodones at the Mexican border.
It also is good for the horse shoe lakes and back waters along the river.

Will post something soon.... got to get "into the boat" and unload the "left overs" from the Xgiving camp-out......
Plan on cleaning the "outer scumm" off the boat in the ocean, as there is road dirt/mudd.... yea mudd.... and river scumm ...... water blast time..... Got to put on the "plasic stuff" and take some waves over the front to loosen up the grime.....
