Oklahoma City ACATS - Ft. Cobb Two Day Event - 21 Sep 07
The tournaments that we ran at Ft. Cobb Lake were blessed with pleasant weather but the fishing was a bit slow according to everyone who was out on the lake. We actually ran two tournaments this weekend. A two day event for those people who were able to get away on Thursday evening, and a single day contest for everyone who had to work on Friday.
The 7:00am conditions on the Friday morning start were 67 degrees with clear skies. Winds were out of the South at 9 mph and the Barometer fluctuated steady from 29.87 to 29.97 during the day. A couple of teams needed some quick TLC on the boats due to the vibration from rough roads on the way down, but everyone was off to find a likely spot by 7:30am. Although the afternoon temperature climbed to 92 degrees, most of the teams stayed out until the 2:30pm stop time in the hopes of finding that one kicker fish to fill out a stringer. As the teams weighed in their catch for the day, it was apparent that the large fish were not being caught in significant numbers. In fact, I was worried that we might have to resort to purchasing some fish in order to fulfill that promise of a fishfry on Friday evening. When all of the fish were weighed up, the leaderboard reflected the following results:
1st Dustin Sipes / RC Coleman - 26.20 lbs Big Fish of 5.5 lbs
2nd Aarron Harrell / Earl Day - 12.55 lbs
3rd Larry Davidson / Rick Hill - 7.55 lbs
After the weigh-in, we kept the fish from the first days catch and Aarron Harrell led the fish cleaning party in preparation for the fish fry. All of the teams came over to the #3 Pavilion around 5:30pm where Mike Strawn and Sue Kruger were preparing the meal of Fried Catfish, cole slaw, french fries, and baked beans. We had plenty of Gatoraid mixed up to quench the thirst that had built up during the day. The baked beans were provided by Larry Davidson who owns and operates “Okie PrimeTime”, a manufacturer of tackle boxes designed for float tube fishing.
The second day of fishing was much the same as the first, including the weather. The bite was slow, and large fish were difficult to find. A couple of the teams had fish break off on Saturday, but the biggest fish landed was a 10.5 pound Blue. The team of Jerrod Lingle and Kent Hurst drove down from Altus, Oklahoma to fish with us and show off the new piece of fishing equipment that they are using. It’s quite a step up from the 16 foot aluminum boat that they were using last time they fished with us.
After the weights were recorded for the second day, the following results were posted to the leaderboard.
1st Dustin Sipes / RC Coleman - 23.00 lbs Big Fish 10.5 lb Blue
2nd Aarron Harrell / Earl Day - 14.45 lbs
3rd Larry Davidson / Rick Hill - 2.00 lbs
The overall winners for the two day event were Dustin Sipes and his grandfather RC Coleman who had a combined total weight of 49.2 lbs and the big fish prize for both days.
The field for the one day tournament consisted of only two teams. Jerrod Lingle and Kent Hurst managed to pull in a 8.45 channel to get the big fish prize, but were beat out on total weight by Aarron Harrell and Earl Day who were fishing on a dual entry gamble which paid off for them. The results for the Saturday only tournament were as follows:
1st Aarron Harrell / Earl Day -14.45 lbs
2nd Jerrod Lingle / Kent Hurst -13.20 lbs
Payouts and prizes for the tournaments were as follows:
Two day 1st Place Dustin Sipes and RC Coleman $450 and a gallon of Danny Kings Punch Bait
Two day Big Fish- Dustin Sipes and RC Coleman $50 and a box of 250 Eagle Claw J hooks provided by Larry Davidson of Okie Prime Time Products.
One day 1st Place- Aarron Harrel and Earl Day $90 and a gallon of Danny Kings Punch Bait
One day Big Fish- Jerrod Lingle and Kent Hurst $10 and a bag of Sponge Hooks and Tubes provided by Larry Davidson of Okie Prime Time Products.
