I heard that there is some deep holes on the Kaw close to Eudora , that produce some monster fish. Does anyone know if there is any wing dikes in that area? If so how long of a walk is it? and is it thick bush or pretty clear?

Thank You in advance :)

there are some wing dams down there its a good walk to get to the good holes(400 yrads or so)a good path to follow though the four wheelers have made a real good path to follow, i fish down there all the time its a heck of a spot better bring the big boy line...lol

Anyone fish the confluence of the Wakarusa/Kaw, Stranger/Kaw , Mill Creek/Kaw? Is there any paths that lead you to these, or do I need a boat?

i know you guys talk about 435 and turner bridge and kawpoint. i dont wanna just go out and walk around forever trying to find where to fish i know a lot of places are pretty inaccesible on these rivers.

i will be bank fishing, wanted to know how to get to these spots where to park etc. being new to river fishing im a little confused as wehre to go.
i live in mission near 635 and i-35 so im kind of in the middle of all these kaw river spotts.
maybe you guys could help me out and let me know a little bit more info on these spots and how to get there and such.

I tried fishing downstream form bowerstock again. No luck I only had liver for bait, I didnt have time to try and go catch shad. I managed to catch 1 goldeye on the liver and had one hell of a hit on a piece of it. I took out my 14ft surf rod (overkill!!) the fish just arent aggresive enough to use that beast yet, I think i,ll try again tommorow with lighter gear. Heck its probably a little early in the season for many channels in the river but I have that itch and I have to scratch it!! lol:rolleyes:

Here is some pics from earlier today. The first one is about a 5 lb. channel I caught down at 435. He bit on shad sides. The second one is Catchinbiguns and Brad K. in the boat, as we are cruisin down the Mighty Mo on Brad's boat , on our way to the Kaw.

We didnt get any bites this evening on the Kaw. The action right now seems to be down at 435. There isnt a whole lot of action right now anyway. Still a bit early. Ill still keep trying though. If its not raining real hard, its a good bet that Sun, Mon, Tues, or Weds , you can catch me down at 435.:)

Here is some other pics from the Kaw lately. The guy holding the channels is my buddy Les. The close up pic of the cats is the same fish. Someone had this houseboat tied up on a sand bar down by the Grinter House at about 78th & K-32. It looks as if it runs and someone uses it regularly. The other pic is a couple guys "trying" to kayak up the rapids at 435. Just thought everyone would like to see these. :)

Yo Sturgeonhunter......Errrr cathunter1978. I agree the action has been a bit slow as of yet but the water temp is still only about 55*. I tend to do better when it hits the 60's. Lots of fihing season yet to come and we'll put some hawgs in the Green Monster yet!!

Hopefully we'll get some rain and get that river level up a few feet I don't think that would hurt at all. We shoul;d have done better lastnight I thought everything was right for a good noght of fishing!!!

Oh well we'll try again soon i'm sure!!

I took charlies advice today and fished the hole on the southside of the dam here in lawrence, I caught two, 1 about a pound 1 about 3 pounds. I did however hook up with two nice fish that got me into something and broke me off. ("50 plus yards of spider wire that I later drug in") the small fish I caught were on liver, the good fish I had were on goldeye that I caught the other day and kept in the fridge. I'm going to try a couple of places for shad in the morning and go back with real bait and fresh line. The liver is a joke it only sraws small fish that just peck at it, I had to wait longer to get hits on the goldeye but they were biggger fish and they weren't messing around with it. I think i'll try throwing my net at clinton spillway, I was there about a month ago casting jigs for little walleye and snagged alot of shad, hope they are still there they could'nt have went anywhere unless someone else has already netted them. There sure seems to be alot of good fish in that hole, THANKS CHARLIE!!:)

Man I tell you there's nothing like having fresh bait, for now we've been using the shad in the Jar, and that's better than nothing for now. But I've gotta to try to get into some shad or goldeye, or carp here if I want to intice those big blues.

The channels were biting pretty good. Kenny had a hog on with my rod and reel , due to me being the good samaritan and helping my buddy Chris set his baitrunner up, but it somehow got off about 10 ft. from the bank. It might have been a flathead, I saw the mouth and head for a split second. It was a good fish . I would have loved to seen him out of the water. Thanks alot Kenny. JK. We had a good time. Today was a good sign of the good fishin to come. Oh well. We'll do it again tomorrow.

GaryF
03-21-2006, 11:41 PM
The Pallid Sturgeon is endangered, and you might go to jail for killing one, but the Shovelnose Sturgeon is a nonsport fish, open to harvest. Just be careful telling them apart :) The vast majority that you catch are going to be legal Shovelnoses, and there are enough differences that you can tell them apart, but it's probably not worth the risk of making a mistake. Unless you really need bait ;)

I caught a couple of fish here in lawrence on the island below bowerstock dam. I caught one real nice channel abot 8lbs the other was only about a pound, it was alot of fun and very incouraging though they hit hard and were already hooked when I picked the rod up. Eric, I noticed the water was down when i went over the bridge this morning. When I came home I noticed it was up..............was it raising while you were out there? After the water get's to high to walk out there give me a call we'll hit it in my boat.

GaryF
03-29-2006, 05:28 PM
I wonder where that water came from? You can kind of see it on the Desoto gage, but not anywhere else.. I was hoping maybe one of the spillways opened up, but it doesn’t look like it. Maybe it was a little cloudburst somewhere.

Eric, good going! I think I would focus on those deeper pools below Bowersock very hard for the next few weeks – this is when the blues really start to move around. One of those goldeye would make a lot of good cut bait ;)

center12
03-29-2006, 06:56 PM
Gary, I not real sure what caused it. When I went over in the morning it was showing mud on the upstream side of the dam and the rock on the SW of the island was showing high and dry. That afternoon the upstream side was back to normal and so was the downstream. A cloudburst woundn't drop the river, I'll check and se if Perry shut down for a bit...........weird stuff for sure.

03-29-2006, 07:00 PM
Didn't happen upstream so it must have been something they did with the boards or turbines. Sure shows up at Desoto though.

I fished the river again tonight, not as good as yesterday evening though. I had a few hits and lost one. The funny thing is I cant get a hit in the hole itself the fish seem to be back behind the hole in the current, i've been making a really long cast with my surf rod out in the current, probably closer to the outlet mall than the island. The water that I caught the fish in yesterday and had hits in this evening is pretty swift and shallow. This seems strange to me I thought fir sure there would be alot of fish in the hole, I guess there just feeding in the run behind it. I noticed a boat track in the sand I hope whoever was fishing there while I was at work today did better than me. As far as the water being high it must have went down by the time I got there yesterday.

I tried to get shad at clinton spillway, nada... I'm sure I would be getting some fish in the river now if I only could find some fresh bait. The dk's has been working good in mary's lake catching little channels for my daughter, but I dont think the river cats are going to fall for that they just have to much good food to eat right now.

Geoff, have you caught any blues on the Missouri this spring?
Calvin,
It has been pretty slim pickens. I got a 10lb blue and Bryan got a 20lber a couple weeks back. We haven't hit the river alot yet but do plan to really start soon. The Missouri has come back up to normal pool. The debris has made it very difficult to fish lately. We fished the river for a couple hours this afternoon and didn't get any bites off shad, bluegils or even green worms!

I think the lack of snow and wet weather up north has had an impact on the river. If I remember right you had your best luck last year in early March didn't you?
Calvin we've always had our best luck at the end of April/ first week of May. So hopefully the best fishing is ahead of us! :)

It's been slow, so far all I have to show is a 7lb channel. Last year by this time I had caught a mess of blues, up to 42lbs, so it’s a little discouraging. But most of our biggest fish from the MO have come around the last week of April or the first week of May, so we still have some time.

He even had a goldeye, but wouldn't let me have any.........kidding again...............did I mention I haven't slept in 22 hours;)

I had a good time out in the boat with charlie today, it was neat seeing some of the holes and structure on the river.
