Several members have been asking for a group get together on the Mississippi and wanted me to set something up. It's not a gathering, just a night of fishing.
Well, I got an idea to run by ya. Seeing as how there could be as many as a dozen of us, boats would split us up an awful lot. Now I know there are some wing dikes that have a sand bar just downstream that would allow being able to cast nearly to the dike, if you tried real hard. Maybe some of you know of such a place. What do you think about setting up a campfire at one of those places and us all fish together? Those of us with boats would be happy to haul the nonboaters and their gear over to the spot we chose.

It just an idea, didn't say it was a good idea. Give me your thoughts. Would ya rather us just take our own boats and a passenger or two and split up? Or we could just fish the same locations, but that could make it a bit crowded.

At this time, I'm open for this fri or sat evening, July 27th/ 28th. Either one would be fine with me.

Come on, I need input quickly or it may all fall apart with this late notice.
Cuz, Gary, Vince, Todd, Chris, and all the rest who showed an interest, chime in on what you think best.

Either way, some of us could go early and catch shad for everyone. That way we would have more time to visit and fish.

Kutter, since you,I and Cuz are all members of Plattin rock, we can all bring a guest in to launch, so 6 boats would probably be plenty. If not I'm sure some could launch at Truman access since it's actually in good shape for once.

Personally, I would like to split up maybe after a long b.s. session. I am all for helping any of the non-boaters out too. Since most of us already have a boat that shouldn't be problem. I am thinking about running over to Wal-mart to purchase me a VHF radio. They have the handhelds for about 60 bucks. That way most of us would be able to talk back and forth without relying on a cell phone. How did you guys do the other night with the bait situation. Bait has been scarce around Truman access. We've been starting to use bluegill and targeting flatheads. We've been catching them, but none with any size yet...Come on everybody else...Cuz, Vince, anyone else...we need your input! I will be out there Friday regardless.

Sounds like a possibility, just decide which ramp we're heading out of and I'll try to be there. I have a boat as well, but no experience running it on the Mississippi. I'm willing to follow someone, but not really wanting to run a whole lot on my own.

Grumper

I'll bring some shad and bluegill. Looking forward to meeting everybody!!:smile2:
Darryl, them frozen mooneyes ought to work like a charm. We've got two ramps here, one is private.Myself Cuz and Kutter are members and we can bring a guest. The other is public and is seven miles down river.

I really don't know if I can make it or not.

A little unsure about running a new section of river at night.

Don't you guys ever fish in the daytime? Fishing a little too slow then or what?

Gary, you mentioned fishing dikes at night. I thought shallows were the ticket for nighttime. Are you fishing the scour holes at night or the upstream edge?

Darryl, I'll probably be fishing all day Friday also, just incase you want to come down and fish. I can show you a few good holes. I fish at night alot, but it seems after 1:00 or so the fish just shut off. This time of year I will be fishing the deep holes though. JMHO. I've had better luck

How did you guys do the other night with the bait situation. Bait has been scarce around Truman access.
We couldn't find a single baitfish, till we went up Joacium Creek (or ever how you spell it). About half way to the dam, we hit into them with 6 or so every cast. The creek was 6-8 ft in the channel and the shad were hiding in the shadows of the brush. This was about 3pm.

Bob there is Truman Access which is a little south of Festus, but is only about 7miles down river of our private ramp. Take I-55 to exit 170. Go south about 3 or 4 miles, make a left on AA, then make an immediate right on Big hollow. Follow the signs all the way to the river. I don't know how the water level looks at Flamm City in Arnold, but you could launch there too. It's about a 20 minute boat ride down to Festus.

Lacledes landing is MM 180
Meramec River Entrance from Flamm City is 160.5
Platin Rock Boat Club 150

Flamm City.. I would guess with about 4 foot of water at the ramp.

What time is Kutter planning on going?
Is that gate locked all the time?
Could Kutter or Gary have Bobs boat come in as a guest if he wants to go?

DARG!!! This will be my 3rd (count it - three!) BOC get together/non-get together that I will be missing due to travel. I am out all weekend (this time at the White River). I don’t think that I can get out of that trip. And a day on a sand bar with you all would be a whoopin' good time. Dangit!

Kutter, I do think that your choice of weekend was intentional so as to make it that I can not attend. Perhaps you were jealous of my increasing ninja powers with a throw net???

Confliction... Doubt... Painful indecision! OK, there is a 75% chance that I will not be there but I need a couple of days to think about how to work it out.

I will return to this thread with a decision.

I don't know what Kutter's plans are yet.
No, the gate is only locked from sunset to sunrise, and if there are alot of people on the water, they will leave it open. Besides that, I have a key.
I'm not real sure yet though, which ramp I will be using. I have been using the Truman access ramp alot here lately. I need to double check on the rules of the boat club. I've been told you can launch guests boat, but the rules I have here in front of me are saying that a member and guest can't launch two serparate watercraft at the same time. So I may end up letting someone put in at the boat club, and I put in at Truman access.

I'm trying to make it down there, do I need to bring my boat? Also, is everyone staying all night long or are we just fishing till around 1-2ish. Like Gary said awhile back I think it seems like the fish turn off around that time and don't start up again till before the sun comes up. I only ask because if everyone is staying all night then I'll have to figure something out. I found out last night that my oldest daughter has to be in the city for a Girl Scout thing Saturday morning at 7 and my girlfriend is working so I have to take her.

If all else fails, I can ride with you, if you are by yourself, and I can leave my boat at home, or my buddy can use it. I know this stretch of river really well.
I went out last night till about 10:30. Had a pretty good moon and visibility was great. My partner lost an absolute hog at the boat. He got it to the top of the water, it swirled and headed for the deep. He had his drag cranked all the way down and it was pulling it out like it wasn't nothing. It then snapped 40lb P-line like it was spaghetti string. I guess he'll be using powerpro like me.

It's up to you all on the times. Vince had planned on meeting me at my house around two. Vince, why don't we change that to 4? I expect to launch around 5pm and head up to Joachim creek to catch shad. Mike, you don't need to bring your boat, we will have room in one of our boats. You can meet at my house also, if you like. I'm next to 141 & Astra Way (next light east of 21). As for headin home time, hmmm, that kind depends on whether they are biting, but midnight is usually about when I head home. With it just being the few of us, we can change times to fit everyone. If Mike needs to leave earlier, not a problem for me. One good thing about this get together not being as originally planned, I don't have to haul wood for a bonfire. LOL

I learned my lesson last week on the bugs. It is ridiculously expensive, but I just bought a Thermocell set up to keep the bugs away. In the past, I have had some bad experiences with DEET. I am yet to find someone who bought the Thermocell and didn't say it was the best way to keep the skeeters off of you. Not sure if that is the truth, or that they didn't want to admit to spending $30 on something that didn't work. LOL

Gary, what was that light you had on our jugging trip, that lit up the jugs better than my million CP light? Was that the Surefire? Another big $$ item that I have heard nothing but praise over.

I just wore jeans and t-shirt the other night and had a citronella candle burning in the boat. It wasn't too bad verses last weekend. That light I was using is indeed a surefire. Stop by Dunn's and get ya one. It's a Nitrolon G2. Only about 30 bucks. I'd buy extra batteries though, they take the lithium batteries. I can tell ya they are worth their weight in gold. It only dropped MAYBE a couple rain drops up there. I had a little trouble finding bait but in the end we (MM516, new member of the BOC:wink:) boated 6 fish, a 22, 34, and several that weighed in the low teens. Oh yeah, I caught one that was about the size of my bait on the hook! How that little guy hooked himself I'll never know!

I could be wrong, but it appears that there is a pattern growing about throwing slurs as poor little ol me.

A little water never hurt no one, as long as there's no soap involved. Everybody complainin cause it's been so dry. Yet ya get a sprinkle or two and get your dander all up.

Gary, I know ya think the timing was right and it was, for you an Cuz in that boat of his that idles at 80 MPH. For the rest of us drownin on the way back to the dock, the timin might have been juuuust a tad off.

Besides, while you an Cuz were busy gettin his boat on the trailer, the rest of us were enjoying a great light show. I think Vince liked it best. He kept shoutin something or other everytime the lightning struck real close. I couldn't hear what he was sayin, for all the thunder and the growing swells crashing against the boat. I could be wrong, Mike could have liked it better than Vince. Hard to tell. He just sat there nice an quiet enjoying the show. He wanted to say somethin, I know, cause he was trembling with excitement holding it back. I really wanted to tell Vince about the weird way his hair was standin, but I didn't think at the time you all wanted me to let loose of the wheel long enough to go up an talk to Vince.

Anyway, I want to take this time to honor Teamwhiskers (Vince). He broke a record that has held since before records were kept. His bravery will never, ever be questioned. He is one man who can look fear straight in the face and laugh at it. I take my hat off to him and I want everybody here to know just how vast his courage is. Never before, ever, since I bought this boat, has any BOC member ridden in my boat more than once.
TILL NOW
Big round of applause!!!!!!

I think it only appropriate that the Mods check into making up a new "medal" Vince can have showing such an accomplishment. It's not some record that is likely to be broken anytime soon.

ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!:smile2: Well.....some of us got back in time. It could have been worse though, the bad part is I knew it was supposed to rain, and I still didn't bring my rain gear..Neither did Cuz! I don't know about you guys but we got caught in a torential down pour earlier that day, so we were wet already. We need to get back out there and do it again though, weather cooperates maybe sometime at the end of August or something. Oh yea,....Besides Vince, I would definetely be brave enough to ride in your boat more than once! Nothing can be worse than my buddy and his boat. I'd be willing to bet money on that. Lol.

Well Kutter I don't know if its brave or stupid, but I'd ride with you anytime you want. I don't live far from ya so if your ever looking for a fishing partner just give me a call. As for the end of August, lets get a date set the sooner we set the date the more time everyone will have and maybe more will be able to show up. I think that wing dike we stopped at last with the big sandbar right behind it would be a great place to have a gathering. It wasn't too far from the ramp and we could run those without boats out there without much of a problem.

In the meantime I was wondering if anyone was wanting to try up at L/D 25 (I think thats where me and Cpalombo fished). Does anyone know if you can still get out on the river at the Cuiver River access ramp? I'd like to head up there early morning and fish till midday or something.

Mike, I don't know about access from Cuivre Island but there is a pay ramp just downstream from the dam. It is always open as far as I know since it is right on the river. Cost is $6.00, has trash cans, dusk to dawn light and a small dock to park your boat while you are getting your truck etc.

I live just 5 miles from the dam so I am interested in a trip any time.

Tom you really are a credit to the writing industry with that article. I am standing up on the front deck holding a net getting ready to nail something and for some reason??? You decide that you want to do circles and figure 8’s in a narrow channel to get the flying carp in the air or throw me out of the boat?? I don’t know rather if you were testing bravery or to see how long it would take me to finally sit down?

The ride back was kinda cool. With the thunderstorm approaching and chasing down that barge for the 3rd time just added to the mystique of what nature has to offer. Id like to sometime see the pictures that Mike was taking or was he really documenting the event and updating his will?? Nobody will really know that one. If anyone deserves a metal it would be Captain Kutter for not only making the decision to head in as also the way he was able to run full throttle all the way back. By the way.. It is raining out now.. Are you out fishing?

Pictures on a cell phone never turn out too good, but you can make out the dark clouds. As to Kutter doing the figure 8's in that narrow channel with you standing up personally I was enjoying every minute of it. It was kind of exciting I didn't know if we were gonna hit the bank, you were gonna fall in, or if one of us was gonna get hit by a carp. At one time I thought we may get the trifecta and do all 3....Kutter get hit, miss a turn and hit a log or the bank sending you flying into the creek. Meanwhile I sit in the middle trying not to laugh and hoping that the boat would still be able to make back to the ramp....lol :tounge_out:

Darryl anytime you want to head out just let me know and give me directions and I'll be there if I can. I work Mon.- Fri. and get home around 3:30 so weekends are better for me unless it's someplace close to me. I'd rather not drive up north on a weeknight, but I'm not completely opposed to it either.

Went out fishing with Kitter today, caught my first fish over 20lbs in a couple of months. It weighed in at 20lbs, 3oz. As soon as Kutter sends me the pics, I'll post it.

Good Job Gary!! I'm glad to hear that the elusive large kitty has been nabbed!

Where did you guys go? What were you using for bait?

We ended up fishing right below the boat ramp at Truman Access. We were using large goldfish for bait. I did get to break in my new Penn 220.
