Well the spot we went to was just a shallow flat. we thought it would be a better fishing location. We almost did not even get out..This was a 3-1/2 hr drive for me to get there..We gave it a shot for a little while then left and went to bass pro shops..We did not even spend a dime there..I needed a new cat rod for a penn reel I had, but I did not like the catmaxx rods, I wanted another quantum bigcat. So we left and went to another tackle store that has them in stock but they were closed...So I spent 7hrs on the rd, 40 bucks in gas, 28 bucks for out of state license and fished for 1 hr.Not a fun day at all

12-27-2005, 01:04 AM
I had 200 bucks in my pocket for bass pro, but we were both bummed after finding this location we went to did not look fishy at all..One good thing Mellon did give me appx 20-lbs of sinkers he made, and I think him for that..I am off all week and the rivers and creeks around my house are blown out from the recent rain, just my luck

Okay heres my take:
I meet Flathunter & Steven @ 5:15AM. The 3 of us, are very big guys. We prob had 800 #'s of man in the the Jeep. So it was cramped, poor Steven had no room at all. I was following the IN signs all the way on Interstate 75, then 275. What I messe dup on is that I should have taken a KY exit of 275, but I kept going. We were only about 20 miles out of the way, (yes ONLY, I've been lots worse). We finally found an exit that would take us right into where we need to be. At this point it sais we were only 12 miles out of the way. This had to be the longest 12 miles of my life. To say the road was curvey (it was a cut through the mountain) would be like saying sometimes it snows in Alaska :p . As we are driving something BIG w/ tons of lights. I was thinking this had to be a Hydro Dam, and was really happy becasue it meant we were closer to the river than any of us thought, well it turned out the closer we got the thoughts of it being a Dam and/or river spot was wrong. It turned out to be a Ski resort! Wow, was that mountain bright. They had manufactored snow & a tons of lights. You know how it is when you go out side at noon after a snowfall of 12 inches, it's so bright that you cant see, this was something like that, but it was still not even daylight yet! Come to find out we only had to few miles to go, until we were back on track. We get to our destination, park and I'm thiking, "Well this may be okay, there are prop some fish laying by those barges or in the mouth of the creek". Then we see this sign "No Trespassing Violaters Will Be Tortured" (Yes Violaters can be toutured, just no terrorists... ) Anyways we had t leave to go to another spot. We got to the other spot and didnt think it looked too good, so we drove around but found nothing else. We fished without luck. Luckily the drive on the way back was geat, except for the part about me falling asleep while drving  ) We hit Bass Pro & to my amazement to be the day after Christmas, it was not to busy. Now for the bad part: I found NOTHING that I was looking for. I want a box of 50 or at least 25 Gama 6/0 Octopus Circle hooks, they only had 6 packs, I wanted a pack of 50 sinker slides, they only had packs of 4, I wanted some small and mid size plastic Plano Stowaways, they DID have these, so I guess I cant say the had NOTHING :glare: ) I wanted to look @ the limited edition ABu 6500 Violet, but you guessed it, NOPE they didnt have it. I know some of you are prob thinking it was after Christmas & they were just out, well I went a while back (months ago) & found the same thing: NOTHING. Am I THAT picky, or am I finding Bass Pro just not to be that great? I usually have my oldest boy w/ me & he loves the place, so thats prob why it's a better trip & I dont complain. He will spend hours at the fish tank. Flathunter was not real impressed w/ the Cat Max rods, so I told him we'll go to my local tackle shop in Dayton, Fisherman's Qtrs. I told him they ALWAYS have Big Cat rods in stock, becasue I've prob bought between 5-7 of them there. I knew I could pick up what I wanted from them in the way of terminal tackle, plus I could put some money down on my layaway which is an Abu 10000 & Heavy action Big Cat. After shopping we were going to hit a little know spot on the GMR that has carp stacked up on each other right now, just to say we caught something. We needed to buy some smaller hooks to do that though, as the smallest we had were 6/0! Well I pull into the parkign lot of Fisherman's & knew it wasnt good...... they were CLOSED! I guess Mon was their holiday. They are usually closed on Sundays and w/ Christmas falling on a Sunday they were closed Mon too. Well that shot us buying terminal tackle, rods, you name it. It also meant that we were not going carping either. Yes, we could have drove to Fairborn, got my other tackle and drove back to the GMR (30 minutes) but at this point we called the day a wash. The only good thing was that I went home & took a nap, Flathunter & Steven on the other hand still had a drive of 1 hour & 40 minutes to get home! :D
Now, I think I dserve rep points for that post, embarrassing as the story is to admit!

Skipjack fishing on rising or falling water? While I understand that Top and some of the others have been catching skippies in slack water below the powerhouse at Dardanelle, all my skipjack have been caught in a current. Here at Little Rock, there is a long rock dike between the powerhouse and spillway areas with a notch in it about midpoint. When the skipjack make their spring run, this notch is a hotspot whenever either the powerhouse or the spillway is putting out at least 30,000 cfm more than the other side, causing a strong current through the notch. Most of the time, the flow is from the spillway to the powerhouse side. Even if there is a strong current all across the spillway, the water rushing through the notch seems to really attract the skipjack. Now, I've seen spots on the Arkansas River where a relatively narrow opening leads to a 'back bay' type of area; with rising or falling water causes a very strong current through this bottleneck. I would expect areas such as this to attract skipjack when the water is rising or falling. Hope this helps. Let me know.

Hey H2O all you need to do is go to catfish connection web site or wait for their new catolog and you can get everything you need and want from them. They have the hooks and the violet reel you want.
Bass Pro isnt all bad just the name should tell you why they dont have catfishing gear.
Sorry to hear about your bad luck. Hope next time it gets better.

yes bearcat I agree. I should have went online to CC to begin with. For now on it's either CC or my local shop, who really focus on catgear too.
FYI: Had I known Jack had $200 in his pocket, I would have dumped him into the river & taken it!
