Got out last night for the first time in 2 weeks.Didn't even try for cats, just throwing a jig from the bank to get back on the water.

Got quite a few 5-6 inch crappie with a few keepers,a few small bass and bluegills,a 3# drum( hit like a 5# bass!)and a 1# channel,all on a blk/char crappie jig in 2 feet of water.

Felt good to get back out-but at dusk the skeeters flat tore me up!!They usually don't bother me much but last night I thought they were going to just fly me back to their home and eat me there. :evil-big: hate those pesky devils

Yeah, they are wicked lately. Me and the boy were out throwing for shad Tuesday night and the cloud around the marker light on the boat was SCARY.

After the heavy rain thur, the little platte was on the rise and dumping into smithville.Only had about an hour, but was getting bites every few minutes.
Going out this morning(sat)with a little more time.

If anyone sees a blue PT Cruiser with 8 foot rods sticking out the top,say HI :D

Nice. I had to work all weekend, got out for a few hours Sat. night. One good bite on a 4" shad, but that was it. I was trying some deeper water just for the heck of it, but no luck.

Lakes up a little and very muddy on my end.I bet they open up the dam pretty soon.I keep checking the website, but usually is a day or 2 behind.

What website do you look at for the dam information? Where in the world are you catching blues at Smithville? All ever seem to get out of there are channel and if I fish for blues or flats I don't even get a bite.

They are only letting out 100 cfs for now.I wonder if it can affect the flow down in La?Probably just a drop in the bucket.

cook,

hows the water temp running over there, I have been fishing the missouri river alot as of late. Haven't been to smithville since June, been waiting for the weather to cool down some. I've been wanting to get back over there and fish some of the spots north of W I was hitting in June. Sounds like you had a good run at them the other morning. Good luck to ya :)

Water temp on top is still around 79-80. Haven't fished above W bridge much, don't know the channels through the underwater forest yet.

Robert, the first sounds great.

Last time i fished the timber at smithville I got high centered for 30 min. or so. Then again the only catfish I ever catch out of smithville is in my throw net. Think I'll go get bait tomorrow.

Haven't done much cattin in the last few weeks. In fact, haven't done much fishing at all.Did get out a few times this week for about an hour each.Catching crappie and white bass, not a ton but enough to keep me busy for an hour.Tons of small shad, about 3 inches, schooling up all over the place.

To bad you can't use crappie for bait. There pretty thick around the boat ramp.

Mr.T
09-14-2005, 12:57 PM
Are the crappie at Smithville keeper size or just a bunch of small ones?

I haven't been fishing there before but my father-in-law is coming for a visit in a few weeks and I think we'll go there for a day of crappie fishing.

The crappie fishing on Truman is almost a waste of time - very few keepers and generally very few fish at all. I hope Smithville is a bit better.

crazy
09-14-2005, 01:08 PM
You can keep them I guess. There around ohhh 8 inches or so.

Mr.T
09-14-2005, 01:41 PM
I think that answers my question.

The length limit on crappie is 9" so if you're not seeing them even that big, then it's a waste of time.

Ya gotta sort thru the shorts, but keepers are there to be had.Just gotta move around iffin yer gettin the 8 inchers.White bass are hot at sun-up and sun-down.

I decided to take a trip up to Smithville this afternoon and they are finally starting to let water out again. Hopefully the fishing around that area will get a little better. I've had some pretty poor luck up there (and anywhere else I go for that matter) and am hoping it will change with this colder weather coming on.

WhoHoooooo
1250/cfs,good news-been working 14-16 hours a day plus 1 hour each way travel time-bad news.

Flatheads should be up there by monday!!

cook

Well,I made it up there Mon.
Letting out 750 cfs, water about even(level) with the sidewalks.
Jigged for about 2 hours in the spillway and the hole.Came up with 1 crappie,1 large drum, and 2 largemouth
Another fellow got a couple short walleye.
Sunday one of the regulars got a 42#flattie.

I move down to the point, past the football field, and gave some liver and shrimp a soaking.Ended up w/4 channels.

Felt good to be out.now back to the 16 hour days :cursing:

I'll keep talking to myself :)
hit the spillway for an hour or so fri.morning.
Fishing with jigs,got a 8# drum on first cast,a 10# flatty on my third cast,and a 12#flatty 30 mins. later.

Help an old man land about a 50+ flatty,no net,is my hand sore today :crying:
but it was worth it.

Nice. We have a lot of Austrian equipment in my building and one of the guys that works on it (from Austria) has been wanting to fish, so we hit the river Monday and the lake last night. Nothing big, couple of channels. I need to fish the spillway, it sounds like. I'm too lazy to drive all the way up there and see if they are letting water out, though.

Gave it an hour this morning.Had 2 hook-ups but never saw them.Web site said 250 cfs/but it is about over for now.Lotsa shad, saw 1 spoonbill, got a few more drum, but by 9 a.m. the place was filling up.

You won't have to talk to yourself anymore. I caught a 22lb flathead on Thursday and helped two guys land much larger ones. What time were you up there on Saturday? I was there between 8 and 10am.

I've often wondered the same thing. I've only caught one blue below the dam and it was 12" and was caught on M&M's dip bait. God bless.

Robert and I will probably fish it. I haven't had much luck at the lake this summer, but next spring I want to get up on the north end in the sticks and try to get some flatheads.

Hey, Cook, you weren't down at the boat ramp off of choteau the other day, were you? Guy was there in a blue PT cruiser and we talked fishing a minute. Didn't think about it till I saw one of your posts the other day mentioning a blue PT.

Not real sure yet Robert, I definetly want to hit the closer ones and if the funds are there possibly more. I will for sure be at the Warsaw one on May 6th. It should have a very good turn out this year with it being in may. Are you going to run them all? I know anthony has his 20' seaark guide boat 4-sale not for sure how much though. If you want me to find out let me know.

Hit the lake for some crappie.Glad I didn't take the boat-got windy real quick.
Jigs under a float, let the wind blow it near bridge pilings.Only caught 3 small ones, all the rest were 10-14 inches.3 white bass as a bonus.Bite stopped at 10 a.m.,not a bite for 30 mins.so I packed it in.
Almost turned the a.c. on in the car
