I was just checking in, I havent seen a lot of talk lately. Everything is going well here, I have about another 9 months here in South Carolina. I am slowly stocking up on fishing gear when it goes on clearance so when I get home I will be ready to tackle the big cats. Before I came into the military my fishing gear was mysterious misplaced that why I have to start over again.

Hey Chris
Glad to hear your getting closer to coming home. Have you got a chance to do any fishing while you are in S.C.? Heard there some pretty good catfishing there.

Chris, me and my fishing buddy were finally going to get out today, 2+ mph breeze, sunny, temp got up to 20deg, so naturally with no wind and that temp, the lake froze up. The ice was only 1/2inch and we could have busted thru it, but it would have taken forever to get to where we wanted to fish out by the dam. The lake has been open though, two boatramps ice free till this morning. It's just been too windy with these temperatures.
Supposed to get up in the mid forties this weekend, so I'm hoping we'll make it out then.
Where would you take me when I come fish with you, on the river? I'd sure like to try some river fishing. Kind of leery about taking the Catoon out with not knowing where I'd be fishing as I've not been on any of the bigger rivers.
We'll sure fish Milford Lake though.

Jim,
Ever do any pheasant hunting during the time the lake is frozen? been doing pretty good out your way.

I visited milford lake last summer for the first time, did pretty good for a first trip. Caught lots of wihte bass along the dam, smallies and largemouth along the rock banks and a few nice channel cats at night. can't wait to get back there this spring. Thats one heck of a lake you all got out there!!!!!

Have you seen many Quail? Been so busy working haven't gone out myself.

Jim

I got a couple of spots that we could fish Kansas River, Mo River and the Maris Des Cygnes river. My uncle used to own a bunch of land next to the Mo river up in Weston but then we would have to purchase a out of state license. The Kansas and Maris Des Cygnes would be our best luck.

Actually you can fish from the Missouri side with a Kansas license, thanks to the reciprocal fishing agreement in effect. This works anywhere that the river forms the boundry between MO and KS, which is anywhere north of KC

Steve,
I've seen a covey here and there, but keep in mind that I'm pheasant hunting most of the time. if We see quail thats just a bonus. Wish there were more quail around I love quail hunting, but i'm not gonna walk all day to see one or two coveys.

Brad, next time you head out this way I'd sure like you to give me a call, I'd be more than happy to meet you and take you out on the Catoon. I can't hunt anymore due to physical limitations. I sure did love it when I could though. I used to raise Beagles and Brittany Spaniels, I miss hunting alot. I still go driving around in the public hunting areas around the house, when I can't go fishing :)

Chris, sounds good to me. You are talking about fishing on the water, I hope. Can't do to much shore fishing as I can't walk to far, specially carrying a load. I do some shore fishing here at Milford, but it's right out the back of the truck, don't have to tote anything any distance. The way the weather man's talking tonight, I'll probably be on the lake Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and maybe even Sunday, temps are supposed to be in the high 40s to mid 50's. Looking forward to our fishing trip, your place and mine both. Maybe we can have some of the other guys from that area join us.

Chris

I am sure they would love to join us! This winter I will be doing some scouting on unfimiliar waters on the Kansas, I am going be busy between hunting, scouting and working!

Chris we'll have to give Hillsdale a try when you get home. We did pretty good with the channels this year.

What other tpyes of fishing do you guys do? I like to flyfish and tie flies. I also build rods.

A buddy of mine used to fish for Crappies out there, he did good all the time, I know of one spot that your can get there by land where another creek comes into the lake, I believe its on the north side. HOws the hunting out there this year? A few years ago I went out to Clinton Lake and did some hunting but not much luck out there.

I have been out to Clay Center a few times, we got our limit everyday that we were out there, I dont like to hunt in large groups of people because it takes the fun out of it, we had 3 people including myself and 2 dogs. It was a great time, I am excited to be going again next year 2006.

Years ago we murdered the quail and roosters in a CRP patch next to my uncles farm in Miltonvale. There are some good bird spots up there for sure.

Jim,
Sorry for the slow reply. I actualy come out Junction City way quite a bit. I've been hunting just to the northwest up aorund clay center and Morganville area. I've had to shut it down for the holidays but I'm planning on getting Back out new years day and every weekend after that except Jan 7th I'll be in Iowa.

Sorry to hear You can no longer hunt. What about blocking? Not much walking, just drive the truck to the other end of the field and get out when the hunters and dogs aproach. Might be able to push a rooster or two Your way. most of the time I'm hunting With a small group 2-3 guys and 1-2 dogs, could always use a blocker. I have a four door truck There would be plenty of room for ya.

As for fishing My wife and I are planning on coming to milford for a weekend in March and a Weekend in April. I would love an opportunity to fish with a local, who knows the lake. I Should know the dates after the first of the year.

Brad, thanks for the offer, the blocking though kinda like hunting, just isn't the same as walking the fields behind the hounds (I used to raise Beagles and Brittany's). When I quit hunting I just started Catfishing bigtime. So when the lake's not froze over(and not TOO windy) I'll be out there.
Went out today, just had one bite, but it sure was beautiful, just a calm variable breeze kept me right where I wanted to fish. It was just nice being out on the lake again, winds been blowing just a little to hard the past week+ to fish deep, 60+ out in front of the dam.
I'll be waiting to hear from you. PM me and I'll send you my phone number. It'd be great to meet you this spring, March is ideal, the Blues'll be running then.

Thanks Jim, You'll definatly be hearing from me. The weekend I spent there last summer was a blast. looking forward to returning This spring.

I understand about the blocking thing not the same as being in the field with the hounds....If My dog can't go I don't go, Most of my enjoyment hunting is getting to see the dogs work and point. so I understand. the invite is open so if you ever change your mind your definatly welcome.

Good luck with the big blues this winter
Merry Christmas to You and yours,
Brad

Hey Chris we're gonna have to go fishing together when you get back at the state lake. Probally won't do a whole lot of good that late in the year but I bet we can catch something especially if it rains.

That sounds good to me, We will have to try the Maris Des Cygnes river or some other rivers, I will hopefully have my boat by then. Do you like to hunt? We should get some brothers together for some hunting and fishin.
