Thank you all for the big welcome! I get lots of great tips and information from
BOC. I am a big fan of Rusty's stinkbait so found this site a long time ago on
Rusty's links section. It is great to be able to see where the fish are biting and
what they are biting on.

Sincerely,

Welcome to the BOC!! What section of the Arkansas River do you fish?

rivrbunny
11-20-2005, 10:32 AM
I usually fish anywhere between Kaw dam and the mouth of the Salt Fork. I have friends with places by the old river bridge (now new), a little down from
the old OG&E, and by the mouth of the Salt Fork. I sometimes fish Kaw lake
up on Beaver Creek. I also like to go on "adventures" and fish somewhere new.
I just enjoy being out in the sunshine and blue skies.

Hey Rivrbunny, I have been trying to fish the Arkansas river, but I'm a little skeered of the moving water. I am gonna have to go with Chris Glass once or at least get some more info from him. I gotta give you kudos if your fishing the river, especially froma boat. Hope to see you out there and welcome again to the BOC.

The river is way down- fishing is great now if you find water with any depth. We
did really well recently fishing the deep spots. Kayaking is a great way to get from one spot to the next on the river but airboating is the best!!! I do not have an airboat but I have family and friends that have airboats. They can usually be
coaxed (without difficulty) to put the airboats in the river on a pretty day.
I do not kayak when the water is up, about 1600 cfs or less is good kayaking
water flow. I got caught once on a sandbar when they let the water out fast
and it is scary trying to get up and out of the river with the water rising. Most of the time I will drag the kayak along just in case the corp starts letting water
out or to get from one sandbar to the next.

Brian (Cutshad), This is a good time to take your pontoon out on the Navagation Channel. We really haven't had any rain latey and there's barely any current. The fishing should be decent with the cooler temps and you don't have to worry about any recent rains floating garbage down the river and trying to dodge it. Get out there and fish.

Welcome to the site Misty! There's alot to learn around this place. We have a pretty good collection of catfishermen who have a lot to offer. I have never fished the navigation channel, but my mother lives around Porter, Okla... close to Muskogee. Which is near the Channel and the Arkansas river. I need to get ahold of Chris Glass and get him to take me there sometime so I can get familiar with it...there is a good possiblity we may be moving there near my mother sometime in the future.

There are no nicer people than fishermen or fisherwomen! Everyone has made
me feel very welcome.
Did anyone get any fishing done over the holiday weekend? It was really windy,
really cold, and really low water on the river all weekend. The hunters are up
at Kaw Lake and I don't fish at the lake during hunting season - it could be hazardous. I hope someone caught some nice fish.

I was catching channel up until a couple weeks ago...but I will be beginning to duck hunt now since the birds have decided to show up. Been getting a few quail here and there too. I'll be deer hunting as well...so I'd imagine I'm done fishing until the walleye, whitebass, and wiper run back up the river this coming spring. Good luck...and don't forget the axe in case you need to chop a hole in the ice...Lol.

Ok Dept Wildlife Conservation says the duck hunting is great at Kaw Lake this
year. Habitat is just right and the ducks too, according to the reports Kaw will
be one of the best this year. Good luck with your hunting. They put in a fishing
dock at Ponca Lake so we can fish year round if we want. We are pretty lucky
to be close to Sooner,Kaw and Ponca lakes. Plus we have the Arkansas river right here too. There isn't much more we could ask for:)

Welcome to the board misty! Hunting seasons got us wrapped up right now, soon as its over its back to fishing. From the looks of that profile picture we might have to ask you for some fishing tips. Nice fish. Did you happen to get a weight on it?

That fish weighed 49 pounds- It was all I could do to hold that giant up for the
picture:D Wouldn't it be great if there were more challenges in life like that one!
Haven't fried that fish yet- he might last all winter! (sounds like a fish story to me too!)

Welcome to the BOC Misty. It's great to see more Okies on the site. If you ever get down to the Oklahoma City area with your kayak, take it out to Lake Overholser and try the Canadian River north of the lake. You can get several miles up the river in the Wildlife Refuge. It's definately not the Arkansas, but, for small water, there's a lot of wildlife to be seen.

Fordman,
Thank you for the tip on the Canadian river. I love the Arkansas but occasionally
my friends and I will go off on a "Misty adventure". We have been to Hulah a couple of times and drove by Copan in the summertime but there was alot of boat traffic so we didn't stop. Beaver Creek at Kaw is beautiful as well. I am also
partial to Bison so the Tall Grass Prairie, Pawnee Bill or Woolaroc are fun to visit.
Luckily my friends are pretty good to let me pick our adventure places, they do
veto me sometimes and we have to go shopping or something requiring cities with lots of people but I like the quiet places best. We will have to see what the
Canadian looks like one of these (warmer) days.

There's a great section of Sand Creek off highway 60 just outside of Pawhuska that I've taken by canoe. You can take it all the way to the Falls at Osage Hills State Park. It's really pretty in there and you will not see a single person. I also take a canoe above the low water dam on the Caney river here in Bartlesville. It's not as pretty as out in Osage Hills but it's a area not many people see to often. Some good fishing in there also.

Chris,
Thank you for the info on pretty places to kayak. I don't get out as often in the
winter-I am not very cold tolerant-but it is the best time to see the outdoors
if I am wanting peace and quiet. I will check some of those spots out next time
we have a tolerably warm day. I drove around Osage Hills last summer to check it out but have not kayaked it yet. I found a boat ramp- is that the best place
to put in a kayak? I did not see any water falls- is there any danger of going over the falls? I am not an adventurous kayaker- I chose the wide stable slow
water kayak. I was afraid if it tipped over I would hit my head on one of the stumps in Kaw or the rocks in the river:) My friends think I am crazy enough for
kayaking anyway! I have walked some of salt creek from a low water bridge off
highway 60 between Burbank and Pawhuska. It is really pretty but I am never sure on waterways if it is private property or not. The Arkansas is open
if you are in a boat so I usually just stay on the river. Someone told me the
Chikaskia and most creeks are private property and the landowner can have you arrested for trespassing whether you are in a boat or not.

Okccatman
12-07-2005, 07:59 AM
As far as private property on a waterway. How I understand it is that the waterway itself is public but the river bed in private. In other words if you are floating by you are fine..... but if you touch bottom you are trespassing.
You said you are concerned about hitting your head etc. Have you considered a helmet? I think I would wear one if rolling was a concern.
I know of a area that you might enjoy kayaking as well. It is the Deep Fork river south of Lake Arcadia.

catfishcentral
12-08-2005, 12:02 AM
To my knowledge all waterways in Oklahoma are open to the public. If you can access via a public place you are fine, landowners don't own the waterways. There is no boat ramp at Osage hills, you'll need to carry it in. The falls are basically a stopping point on sand creek. There a series of large sandstone slabs where the water spills over making a series of small pretty waterfalls. The water below is too shallow but the water up from the falls is deep and pretty. In order to get there drive down to where the public pool is located. There's a sand trail and a short hike to the falls. Ive taken a canoe down there a couple times and also a float tube and fished from it. This is a nice summer trip.

Thank you for the information. I will have lots of pretty places to check out in
the spring/summer. It gives me something fun to think about during the winter:) Misty
