I have just bought a new e-trax and im having trouble getting a signal.Are they like a cell phone with dead spots?

If you're using it outside you shouldn't have a problem. They just need a clear view of the sky.

It might take a while (as in several minutes) for it to get a fix the first time you turn it on. The unit "remembers" where it was the last time it was turned on (at the factory), and when the satellites aren't where it thinks they should be based on that position, it has to go back to ground zero and start figuring out where they are all over again. Older GPS units used to take 5 or 10 minutes to get a fix, the newer ones are much much faster.

Make sure you're outside, away from cars and buildings and just set it down and give it some time.

If it still doesn't get a fix, there's probably something wrong with it -- call the support line.

The device must have a clear line of sight to satelites. You need to get 3 satelites to determine location... 4 satelites for location, speed and direction.

if you are in a thick forest, it will cause problem... also in a valley with mountains can cause probem.

Usually don't have problems on a lake... its wide open.

Remember also a handheld GPS is a reciever, doesn't transmit anything. the only booster you could get would be an external antenna.
