Anyone know some good places to get down to the Kansas river between Manhattan and Lawrence? Maybe even Lawrence and KC. I don't mind walking to get there, but let me know if there are good places where I can get my truck close. As soon as it thaws out around here I am going to be ready to go...Thanks

I"ll take fishing a the kansas river in lawrence anyday:006: The Flatheads and channels pulled out of the river. Would make any catfishermen happy and the blue comes up to lawrence when the water is high enough. You See that blue that Warcaft1975 is holding that came from lawrence. Were you ask I can't tell you were at, that has been sworn a fisherman seceret. But as far as Kc never fished there personally so i'm not going to knock it. I just not really convinced of the safety with fishing there, after all to stories of people chunking rocks from bridges and people stealing from you. The choice is yours. All i Have to say is Lawrence is a excellent fishing spot.:0a17: :haha:
Just stop by somtime and lets fish.

"KC" covers a lot of area, not just downtown. I've come closer to getting shot out in the boondocks on the Missouri River. Just some d/a shooting his handgun off into the river, and wasn't paying attention to anything else going on. I'll be fishing a lot more out of downtown this year, and if anything happens, you'll hear about it.

There is theft and vandalism everywhere! That wasn't the question or the point. He asked where there are good places to go fishing on the kansas river? I told him about lawrence and that i have no idea of the fishing in KC so i wasn't going to knock it. That only personally safety is brought up more in the Kc area. Cause you hear about it more. Why you ask ? it makes the local paper, news our is told to us here on the boc.

thats right fishing in lawrence sucks and there is too much theft and what not going on around here k.c is a much better place so go hang out up there and keep the rest of the k.c jokers up there with ya. all they do is cause problems down here anyway.i like my town the way it is.the less people think its great the less jokers we have

If we have a whole week of weather like we're having today I think most of the snow and ice will be gone down here. I may have to go donw to Kaw or Keystone next weekend. Probably Kaw since I'll have to be home in front of the TV at 5 PM. Is the new addition to the water works going to make your job harder or easier Charlie?

Harder to start with because of on-site construction. Will be easier after that because of automation. We've not had a Direct of Utilities for almost 2 years and now we had an assistant director resign...........I've a feeling my role and schedule in the waterplants may change soon, along with a loss in OT(about 5G a year). Only 12 years till retirement, going to start hammering the IRA's. Can't wait to get the hell out of NE Kansas. You still planning on OK??

Put as much as possible into your savings Charlie. 12 years will fly by faster than you can even imagine. I think you would like Oklahoma. With the exception of trapping, all their laws and taxes beats the hell out of Blue Nosed Kansas.
I am planning to buy some land or a house at Keystone this year and moving there in a couple of years. Tom (Old Prowler) is almost within sight of the Mannford boat ramp and I think I can find something pretty close to him. By the time you get down there I'll be a full fledged Okie. I'm already a Sooners fan so won't have any problems there. Except that they will be my number two team and I'll have to sign up for the Jayhawk network so I don't miss any of their games. Charlie you need to spend a weekend running jugs with me on Keystone this spring.
How have you been doing Tom? I'm still trapping beaver and rats. The fur is too rubbed on most of the cats and coyotes now to make it worthwhile killing them. I'm getting a real itch to catch some fish.
Hope you boys aren't taking any fish home from the Kaw near Lawrence (assuming your cars don't get stolen while you're fishing, of course...)
Kansas recommends not eating fish or aquatic life from the following locations for the reasons stated:
The Kansas River from Lawrence (below Bowersock Dam) downstream to Eudora at the confluence of the Wakarusa River for bottomfeeding fish* because of PCB levels;
* Bottom-feeding fish include carp, blue catfish, channel catfish, flathead catfish, freshwater drum, bullheads, sturgeons, buffalos, carpsuckers, and other sucker species.

You Kids need to start playing nice or You're going to time out!.....LOL
C'mon Fellas There are plenty of fish for all of us in Lawrence and here in KC.
I'm the guy that had rocks chucked at Him from the bridge, not much fun. I'm wary of folks on bridges anymore. But in all truthfullness this kinda thing could have happened just as easily in Lawrence as it did in KC. Punk Kids do stupid things at times, I doubt there is any shortage of punk kids in Lawrence. I know there is no shortage here in the KC.
Anytime You park Your vehicle in a public parking lot and leave it overnight You put your property at risk. Last year I fished at night from Kaw Point at least 2-3 times a week, never had any trouble at all. I even left the back windows in My truck down one night, nothing got stolen. I'm sure that one of these days I'll get My truck broken into or vandalized. Not because of where I fish, but rather, how often I go fishing and leave my property at risk. Guess I'll keep the insurance policy paid up and fish on!

A pellet gun will take care of kids throwing rocks, stings just enough to make them quit, and what are they going to do, tell on you?
What is sounds like you guys need to do, is have a little fishing tournament, kind of an East v. West type deal, handle it like they do the catfish.com tournaments and let it run for a few weeks, just to see who does have the better waters, or skill.
Of course you can put a rule in there for vandalism, and penalize teams if they have any while they are fishing at either location. Example - broken windshield = 50lb deduction. Maybe a 2lb deduction for each rock chunked off any bridge...........

I think it would be pretty cool, just wish I lived up that way to get in on the action. We could make another region, for us down here, but not sure we have the waters to compete with you guys locally. At least for the Blues........yet anyway.
Calvin, did you happen to make it to the Boat and Travel show last weekend? They sure had some sweet rigs out there. Anyway, the catfish guy that was giving a presentation was talking about Cheney and Eldorado and how in 5 to 10 years the blues that were stocked in there the last few years could be anywhere from 20 to 40 pounds. He said with the food supply they have in both lakes, especially Cheney with the White Perch, it would be nothing for them to gain 2.5 to 4 pounds per year. Not sure if I believe him or not, but sure hope that is the case!

Has anyone tried putting together a KC/River get together up there?? I would kill for the chance to fish/gtg with all the locals and others of us who do not get to fish those waters very often, to be shown how and around by the locals.
Have you guys ever had a gtg up there?

Gary & Jeff, Let me know when you get ready to start fishing the Missouri this spring and I'll plan on making a trip up there. Is the Kaw still iced up?

Calvin,
I'm going to start hitting the MO in March shortly after I move. Gary has plans for awhile but I'm sure he will be ready before the blues kick it into high gear. I'll be sure to post when they really start bitting. I have to get settled in and locate some bait holes.

I have a boat now we can use. It may help keep us from having to hike two miles up the river to the good spot. I may even have a new motor by late March or early April. Keep me posted. That early in the year I can probably get us bait here and keep it alive until I get there. Where are you going to be working in KC?

Calvin,
I'm moving to Parkville so I won't be far from all my old bait holes in Olathe. I'm going to try to locate some new bait holes closer to my new house. March, April, and May are all great months for blues on the Missouri.
I'm still working for myself. I sell on the internet, I've changed my business model a bit and now I mainly sell books. I have expanded alot and sell on about 30 different websites. My wife and I both work full time on our business.
We have been looking for a house for over 6 months and finally found this one. We were really picky on which house we would move into so it took awhile.

Calvin,
You should see the bait tank my wife got for me for my birthday. It is one of the Keep-Alive models, the 14 gallon glo-tank. I can keep bait for DAYS in this thing, it is really nice.
I am ready to go, like to put the boat in the water after the makeover I gave it this winter, does not even look like the same boat.

Jeff, we'll have to make a couple of runs up to Parkville this spring to fish with Geoff and Gary. I think I'd feel better leaving my truck there than at Kaw Point.
I'm heading south as soon as we get a good weekend if you're interested. It sounds like this weekend is going to get snowy again.

They are letting out water at Kaw and Keystone looks great too. If this "great storm" they keep talking about fails to develop I may run down to Kaw Sunday. If I do I'll give you a shout. Right now its sunny, warm and very little wind here. I think they might have been crying wolf again.

calvin,
when I was out thursday there was a lot of crap coming down both the Kaw and the Mo. Hard to fish with all the grass and wood moving downstream. if We don't get too much rain most of that stuff should be gone and You'll be in good shape come Sunday.

Brad, I should have been more specific about my post. I meant to say Kaw Lake instead of the Kaw. I figured the Kaw River was still pretty plugged with ice and winter debris. Thanks for the update because as soon as I can get good weekend I want to come north to fish the Kaw or Missouri too. The problem is I want to schedule my fishing trips around the Jayhawks' schedule. I'm sure I can see their games up there but wouldn't be able to in Oklahoma.

Calvin, There is not much more enjoyable fishing experience than sitting in the boat fishing, while listening to your team on the radio, I love doing that, whether it be the Chiefs, the Braves, KU basketball, OU football, or Gordon lapping the field, it makes the fishing that much better.

Is this deal gonna be biggest fish or total weight of a 5 fish stringer? This might be a fun deal to get in to.We got bank fisherman in one corner, a boat bound angler on the other corner and when does the ring bell sound?Who is gonna be the referee on this little deal?I know what the lower Kaw has to offer and I have been on the upper section a time or two.Biggest fish for the season sounds like the best way to rule this one I think.
Well since you spoke up you can referee!! I'm game for the 5 biggest fish of the year or just the biggest fish of the year.

I might want to get in on the action with ya Josh.I saw Brad and Doug over the weekend and told Brad to just order the raffle rod wrapped in blue as I am gonna win it and that way it will match my other one.:tounge_out: Tournament time is coming closer and I for one am lookin for it to get going. Once the season gets going the fun is not far behind.Working the Open house around all the new boats about killed me.i will get one someday just gotta work a few details out.I know what I want just gotta find a way to pay for it.

Calvin,
The way the Hawks have been playing, there is really no need to watch them lately, you know it will be a blow out.
Of course they are about due to lose to Baylor or somebody! :tounge_out: Kind of the way they seem to play.

Jeff, the Sooners almost embarrassed them Monday. They play TX at 11 AM Saturday so I'll be able to go fishing Saturday afternoon and night. If I can catch some perch over where I'm trapping beaver I may set a line. Otherwise I'll be stuck with sides and gizzards. I'm getting a little hungry for some fresh fish. How's your house coming?

Ugh! Don't ask, we were all ready to break ground when the darn weather turned bad, put us off another month, I am still wrestling with Westar to get electric pulled back to our land, what a pain!
I am about ready to sell the 7 acres, and buy a lot on Keystone, and just sit on it for another 20 years or so until I can start thinking about retiring.

Jeff, right now is a good time to look at Keystone land. I've found several spots close to the ramp and a couple that butt up to the government land and they are pretty reasonable. I wish I'd bought some land down there several years ago.
How're you doing Tom? Right now I'm just catching a few beavers to clean out a neighbor's pond. I may keep a couple to eat too, but I'm starting to get more interested in catching a flathead or bluecat than a beaver.
