What ways do you like to fish and why.
Me i have no boat. so i fish catfish from the bank side.
Keeping bait off bottom a foot or more. why do i do that it makes it easyer for the catfish to locat it easyer for them to get hold of it and easyer for them to hold it longer. in the end it pays off cause the longer they holder the better hold they have onit gives you every chance at a better hook set.
Thank you to any who also give there input.

I usually fish from the bank also. I normally use a slip rig and fish on the bottom.

I fish the bank on the bottom and I tightline it so I can see the rod move instantly. But I'm going to try to inject air into worms so they will float a little off of the bottom. anyone heard of that method and if so did it work?

When its possible..usually early morning or late night when theyre feeding shallow...i LOVE to FLYLINE. No weight, bail open or clicker on and just wait for the line to start peeling away.
A nice chunk of mackerell replaces the weight real nice and i can usually get it out 20 or so feet.
I get a good deal on glow sticks here, so at night i just tape one on the pole tip and wait for it to start bouncin and peelin
When that isnt possible, Carolina rig all the way.

I use a carolina rig with a 2oz no roll sinker. Seems to work great.

I bought one of those worm inflators and it does float em- but i dont really use too many worms anymore, just meal worms.
Also, out here in cali alot of people seem to use a single small marshmello to keep the bait off the bottom. M&M= Marshmello and mealworms are common. Shrimp and marshmello etc etc

I fish from a boat so it depends where i am fishing at. Like if i am fishing around alot of underwater stumps and stuff like that i will use slip-floats(or if im tryin to get those suspended cats. Most of the time i usally like fishing on the bottom, useing a simple two hook leader with a 3 ounce weight on the rig and 6/0 gamakatsu hooks
Bank fish. Generally use a Carolina rig, 1/2 oz weight, 3/0 circle hook with chicken liver.Start in the morning around 4 and usually quit around 8. Have been experimenting with a Pater Noster rig with I may soon use as my main set up.
From the shore with a egg sinker, barrel swivlel and hook on a leader
Unless I'm using live bait, then I use big slip bobbers.

Tightlining with a Carolina rig with a 1/4 or 1/2 ounce weight. or a split shot rig.

I fish with a float on the leader holding the hook, that keeps the bait up off the bottom a bit.
When I am fishing off the boat, I will raise the hook about a foot.

I love to be in a part of the river that has a slow current so as I can set the boat up so I can fish out of the side of my 16' jon sitting in my camping chair with a cold can of Busch beer..oh, yea, I also like the Carolina rig with a float on my leader.

I fish off the bank using a Carolina rig with a 1/2 oz walking sinker in lakes. Usually an 18 inch leader with a 2/0 to 4/0 Gamakatsu Finesse Wide Gap hook. Most of my fishing is for bullheads and channels under 5 lbs. I prop my rod up and pull the line down between two guides on my rod and clip a small bobber on it so it hangs down. When I get a bite, it's easy to see the bobber hanging down jump up. If it slams against the rod - channel cat bite. If it jumps a few times and slowly comes up to the rod - bullhead.

I enjoy fishing small rivers with 20 or so bankpoles out of a 12 ft. Jon boat. I bait mainly with live bluegills and fish for flatheads and channels. I do not place the poles in the bank, but nail them to log jams, overhanging trees, etc.

If I have my way it is drift fishing with the bait suspended at different depths off the bottom, but I will also use a float rig when fishing from the bank. But as long as it is with a good friend or 2 any way is fine by me.

I tight line for channels but rig a slip sinker with about 14" to 18" leader for Flatheads. They seem to feel a tightline and let it go. I back the drag all the way off and wait for them to take line out. I use pole bells. That way the bait will let me know when a big fish is coming in. When the bait sees a flathead coming, hell try to get away and ring the bell.

After reading the title to the thread, I just wanted to add one more way I like to fish, and that is the RIGHT way. I want to do all the right things when I fish such as: Clean up my trash when I leave and clean up after others that they have left disrespectfully. Im a big fan of CPR so I usually release all fish after catching them except baitfish of course. Im not saying that keeping fish to eat is wrong, just not to let them die if you dont plan on eating them. I wont go fishing if I havent bought my liscense first. I actually have met some people that try to slip by and save a few bucks, its just not right. I wont crowd near other fishermen, its not that hard to find a different spot and give them plenty of room for comfort. I only fish with the amount of poles the state law will allow me at one time. Last but not least , i want to set a good example of being a fisherman to the younger generations out there.

I always take a trash bag with me and don't have much trouble filling it most anywhere on the bank. I can't believe how much trash is thrown around. I know beer goes with fishin' but I wish everyone would take their cans home with them!(bait containers and beenie weinie cans too).

hello all. i mainly fish a canal and the platte river. i usually fish tightlined from the bank, with about five ounces of weight and a net style dip worm with sonny's. i tie on a swivel to my main line and then have about a foot long leader on the hook and about 2 feet of line on the weights. when i use circle hooks i do it the same way. i was fishing with a slip rig but i couldn't get the hook set more than 5 times. well hope this help and if anyone has any pointers for me let me know. good luck and peace.

I too bank fish as I don't yet have a boat. One day soon..........lol. Anyway, between the wife and me we usually have 2 poles out tightlining for channels, usually with liver on one and shrimp or dip bait on the other. I usually keep one pole out freelining with a gill and then we usually have one pole out with a slip bobber. My daughter is usually sitting next to me pulling in bluegill after bluegill with her worms while my son is out chunking lures for bass. The heaviest line I run on any of my setups right now is 20 lb. test. that may change if I start catching anything big enough to break that, lol.
I prefer to make a night of it and head out late evening and stay until it gets too hot to fish the next day. We use a lantern but most of the time just stick with chemlights on our poles and flashlights when needed. I am starting to use the circles now and like them alot. I use a carolina rig for just about all of my fishing. Sinker weight depending on the current and live bait size. I use baitcasting reels almost exclusively while my wife, son, and daughter prefer spinning reels. We of course have our Zebco 33's also but they don't get used much anymore and get thrown in the truck "just in case". I also flyfish but not very good at it yet, lol. My dad catches catfish all the time with his flyrod, but I am still learning I guess as I have had it for only a couple of months and spend most of my time taking the knots out of my leader, lol. Anyway, I don't fish just because I enjoy fishing, but I also fish to put fish on the table and in the freezer! I can eat fish several times a week and never get tired of it. Anything too much above eating size I will release unless I am competely out of fish at the house.

Wolfman i would like to say thank you for ading that part if a tackle no other tacklei always take a trash bag.
Alot of the bank fishermen save the water for the boat fishermen.
Just a fact alot of places get shut down cause of trash. and when they do wont even let anyone fish from boat also.
So i will keep fishing from the bank and picking the trash up thats around. so it saves the body of water for me and the ones with boats.
Thanks all for your input man it's a bifg help to us all.

Yall are right on about the trash. When I was a kid all we used to have to do is go knock on someones door to get permission to fish their ponds or hunt on their land and we were never short of fishing waters. Well, nowadays no one will let you hunt or fish their land due to a few idiots who leave all their trash, hunt and fish without permission, poach and vandalize property. I just don't understand people like that. No respect for the land or other people or themselves is the obvious problem. I think you could probably say that their parents probably "dropped the ball", but anyway, I make it a definate point to teach my kids how important it is to keep our hunting and fishing areas clean. I also make it a point to pick up trash while they around or watching me without saying a word to them as sometimes that sticks with them alot more than a lecture. "Lead by example" I think they call it.

I prefer bank fishin. on my big pole I use a 2-3 oz sinker on bottom and up about 2 foot I make a 18" live leader for my kahle hook with a 3-4 inch bluegill. on my lil poles for the pan sized cats I just use a 1/0 bait holder 12" below an egg slip sinker, armed with a wad o nightcrawlers.

Glad to see the responses to my entry about slobs. It's a shame a few of us have to pick up after the rest. I keep hoping for a day when I won't find any trash on the bank but it hasn't happened yet. When it rains, all that trash winds up in the water, of course. I dive in the same water I fish and you wouldn't believe the crap I find down there. I'm more scared of getting hurt on the stuff people throw in there then I am about anything nature puts down there. That goes for fishing line also. We should burn it instead of leaving it all over the place. I hate getting tangled in it underwater...and finding wildlife tangled in it!

Yep brother your right it use to be the same here to people use to would let you hunt or fish there land but now it's hard to find aany that will.
Cause they look at the good ones and think about what the bad ones did.
My brother flathead i know your right on your area down there. I was down near where the old rock place use to be one day and there was a bag of trash in the water. now i don't think they will even let anyone fish that area.
Thank you flathead for also trying to help keep the water clean around here. Be careful in that water brother.
One day when the time lets us i would like to shake that paw brother.

I fish different ways to match the conditions.Somedays, and some weather conditions, I will bank fish using a Carolina rig. Other days and other conditions, I will float my bait under a bobber. I reckon I do more trolling in my boat using a drop shot rig than any other type of fishing. I do enjoy drifting with either a Carolina rig or a drop shot rig if the conditions warrant it. I think each rig is the best rig under certain conditions, so when those conditions prevail, I match the rig to the conditions.
I can essentually go fishing any time I want to go, so, I try to fish those times when I think the fish are biting instead of fishing the times I can go. I usually always catch fish but sometimes I catch a lot of big fish.
I like folks that take their trash with them. I live on a lake and we have a lot of trashy people that make a big mess everytime they go.
