Not sure that I even know how to use one. I have a humminbird 565. the manual is not much help to me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Chris, go to the hummingbird web site, they should have tutorial and if they don't go to Lowrance's web site they have a great tutorial.

chris, maybe you have book with that hummingbird? if you have it so just read that directions as step next explain to you..

Chris, there are some good posts in the electronics review forum, or do a general search on the BOC.
Here are some links to other good information. Some of it may appear boring at first sight, but all is necessary to really understand how to properly use the sonar. Notice I call it "sonar", not fish finder. :wink:

These are more toward Lowrance products, but the principles apply to any brand. I'm not sure what, if any, tutorials Humminbird may have, but you could check their website.

what r u trying to do with the finder?
I have 535 and it was a breeze to figure out.

I am looking at getting a new depth/fish finder. thinking about the the lowrance 125 or 135, but was wondering if i should spend a little more $$ and get a color unit. just wondered if anyone who has a color unit, is it worth the extra $$ for the color.

Ron, Definitely get the color. I also was looking at a greyscale vs color and after much research and talking with some of the pros at a local walleye tournament I went with the color. While it may be a bit more expensive its so much cheaper than getting a greyscale and then wishing you had the color and buying the color. As they say....Do it right the first time.
