A few of us BOC members are going to Port Gibson on the 7,8,9,and 10th of June,we will be camping and fishing. We have a couple of places we can camp at and we are still flexible as to where we will camp. We are thinking about Grand Gulf State Park,it is 5 dollars a night for tent camping. We will be fishing the MS river out of Claiborne County Port. At the port there is a boat ramp and plenty of room for bank fishing. And a couple of us will be fishing the Big Black river too. It is a small river with good fishing and the boat ramp is at the 61 hwy bridge.
Everybody is welcome to come camping and fishing with us!!

The Mighty Mississippi is RISING pretty good! It oughta be some good fishin!
oldprowler
01-18-2007, 10:46 AM
Coach: Does that mean I do not have to go through the passport process again? I sure hope so, the required shots were not too bad although I was a little concerned about the use of the community needle -- especially since I got there for my shots right after they finished with that van load of "cheerleaders" passing through on their way to New Orleans.
I hope you have started saving up them skippie tails for me like I asked you to. There is just something about the way they twirl in the water that really attracts the bigguns.

To all heading toward Port Gibson in June: Word on the street is that the game wardens are out in full force around the Vicksburg and Port Gibson ports. Please be sure to have all of your gear in order and be legal.
I also hear that the bait shop in PG has skippies for sale. Hopefully, that won't be an issue but it's good to know.

I will go ahead and post directions in case somebody needs them,
The Port is just south a few miles of Grand Gulf Nuclear Station,,
it is at Claiborne County Port,,,,, Port Gibson is about 25 miles south of Vicksburg down Hwy 61
Go south on 61 until you see sign that says Grand Gulf State Park,, take a right and go until you see a sign that says Claiborne Co. Port,, take left and go past Grand Gulf Nuclear Station and take right on I believe it is Bald knob Hill Road,,go until you get to gravel road to right ,,take it then take first left and you will head straight for campin area and boat ramp.
If you have anymore questions, let me know!

If we're gonna be staying at Grand Gulf, they have electricity at the campsites....? I think I can borrow a generator from research (Howdy).
I've been doing a lot of fishin but not much catchin. Can't seem to find the skips either. 40 foot river stage probably isn't helping much. I've fished from Ashbrook down to the bridge. All three of my fish this year came from the same hole. Biggest one a little over 10 pounds. Frustrating!

05-16-2007, 11:52 PM
looks like we are gonna need some generators, the camping area with electricity hook ups at Grand Gulf doesnt have enough room for us, and the non electricity campin area is already taken,so it looks like we will be ruffin it at the port! but thats OK, it is some good night time bank fishin there!
Is there anybody else coming to Port Gibson that needs to be added to the list?

Steve, I can almost certainly get more sunfish. I don't really have a good way to keep them alive though. Do you have room in your aquarium for more? I can get you loaded this week or weekend.
I'll try to get something rigged up to transport some live fish. I have some frozen skipjack but they sure have been hard to come by this year. Is there a discharge at the nuke plant at PG? Maybe Scott can point us in the direction of skippies in the area.
Would it be worth it to freeze some of those sunfish? Or bream....or bass?

Reb, sorry to hear you aint gonna make it!
Joe, there is a discharge at the plant and its not far at all from the port and I have never tried frozen perch, bream, or bass.
My bait pond got drained and it was real convenient to the river,,messed me up big time! I know where another one is but its not as convenient as that pond, Im gonna try it out this weekend maybe it will have some good bait in it.

State Law 49-7-81 states "Shad and minnows may only be taken as bait with the aid of a dip or landing net, cast nets, boat-mounted scoops and wire baskets by residents for personal use in sportfishing." So, it would be illegal for nonresidents to use these gears to catch shad and minnows. Have the resident use these gears to catch shad and minnows and have them give them to the nonresidents. If the residents sell them to the nonresidents, then the residents will need to purchase a commercial fishing license.
Dennis Riecke
Fisheries
In response to:
I have a question concerning non-residents and using a net to catch bait. The regulations state that only residents may use a net to catch minnows and shad. If a non-resident is in a boat with a resident who is throwing a net, is the NR in violation of the law? Can a NR use a castnet at any time on public waters in Mississippi?
The reason for this line of questions is that there will be several people fishing the Mississippi River around Port Gibson and there will be some non-residents in the group. They are questioning the wording of the law as it pertains to catching bait. I have started a discussion of this on the MDWFP forum hoping to get some clarification. http://www.mdwfp.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=31933
Any help would be appreciated.
Joe
While this did not answer directly the question about a NR being in the boat with a resident, it pretty much states that you are not treated equally with a NR license. I would ASSume that a NR in the boat with a resident would be legal as long as the resident was the only one using the net and there was only one net in the boat.
Little Mac
05-31-2007, 01:49 PM
So, I cant bring my own bait??? Ya'll got some screwy law, If I pay for a non resident fishing license for a year, then I should be treated equally. Ya'll bring some extra money, might need bail. cuz I will argue the point.

thanks Joe , I called the Msippi LE> office also and got about the same .

Dennis followed up by posting the following on the MDWFP:
The law says it all very clearly. Where you are fishing has nothing to do with residency. Everyone lives somewhere and that permanent abode is their residence which is located in one state. All the reciprocal license agreements do is recognize the validity of another states license on certain waters, nothing else is granted, only the right to use a license issued by another state on certain land and water within another state which is adjacent to the state of the residency of the license holder. If a nonresidnet uses the gear above in such a manner, then they are in violation of the law. Nonresidents can buy a commercial fishing license to catch minnows and shad. Residents can use these gears and give minnows and shad to nonresidents. Residents would have to have a resident commercial fishing license to sell these fish to nonresidents. Minnows harvested from public water in Mississippi cannot be taken out of state for sale.

So, if that is the case what do we do? buy a 3 day then go back 3 days later and buy another 3 day. Thats 30 bucks. so it would be cheaper than the 50 for a yearly if its just gonna expire at the end of the month.

First off ,I would like to give a BIG THANKS to ALL that came down to Port Gibson!!!! Alot of the fellas traveled all the way from Oklahoma, Kansas, and Arkansas,,,,,,, and my friends,,,,, that is dedication in my book!
The FISHIN was TOUGH, but a few nice ones were caught,,,,, I know alot of folks that would have bragged on them and posted pics! but that isnt the nature of these fellas!
And as far as somebody fallin out of the boat,,, it wasnt anybody in our group,, if you were there you should have come on up to the campin area,, we had the BEST CATMEN in the WORLD gathered right there and they were giving seminars,,,, free of charge,,,
Again a BIG THANKS to ALL that was there,, you know who you are!!
Sincerely,
Scott aka heavyduty

Fellas, I had a blast! We fished hard and laughed harder. First mate on my boat was one fantastic fella. We cut up and caught up and just plain ol' had a ball! He can be my anchor man any day. Hopefully I'll get a chance to be his anchor man one day.
Man, it's tough when people change their name on ya... :tounge_out: Walter, Walter and Howard, Fred and Frank......:0a28: I may have been suffering from blue can syndrome.
I'd do it again any day! Maybe next time I won't harrass the LEOs...

Howard, don't waste your time coming to Greenville just yet. The bite has been as bad here as anywhere else. I'm sure it will get better but it's rough right now. I'd be interested in another trip to Port Gibson or Vicksburg.
Keep October in mind....

i'm still lookin for the pictures with george in them !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Hello Guys. Glad to hear you had a good time down here in MS. Hate fishing was slow. I am new to the site, but have benn catfishin' here in Ol' Miss since I've been knee high to a duck. (currently 27) I'm from central MS and spend a fair amount of time on the Big Muddy. I hate I wasn't aware earlier you boys were gonna be in Port Gibson or I would have come over and introduced myself properly. Take care and good luck!

As hard as it may be to believe, sometimes I can be a bit mouthy. I know....I have a hard time believing it myself. So when one of our group introduced us to the local LEO, I took advantage of the situation by trying to gain some attention. Seems George didn't like it too much when I started calling bull shark to some of his stories (see pic 1). I thought he was joking around so I kept running my mouth. Well, turns out that I was the only one who thought it was funny (see pic 2). I thought I was a goner. I was wondering what I was going to tell my wife and children. (Yes, Daddy's a violator) :0a4: Going to the big house. While my friends allowed me to dig my own grave, they did plead and beg for George not to take me away. I was very proud that they stood up for me like that. (see pic 3). Turns out that George is an outstanding member of the force and that he does, after all, have a sense of humor. He saw right through me and taught me a sobering lesson. Thanks to all who made this trip a memorable experience! I enjoyed every minute of it! Let's do it again....well, almost all of it....:0a19:
