Well, I started deer hunting last season, and today was my first opportunity to hunt this rifle season. My uncle took me down to his friend's place this morning, he's got almost 1,000acres, mostly swampy land. We got down there around 10 and fished in the ~stocked~ pond. Good fishin! We caught around fifteen, biggest was a lil over 4lbs. Then we set out to a greenfield around 3. Within thirty minutes over settling in the shooting house, I looked to my right and saw a button buck browsing about thirty yards away. He was followed by three does. All four were 1 1/2 y/o. The landowner wanted us to take does and only big mature bucks. I could have taken one then, but I decided to wait and see if a momma doe would come out. While waiting for a bigger doe, at the end of the field came a 2 1/2 y/o spike, quickly followed by another spike. We sat and watched the 6 deer for a bit to see if anything else would happen. Then something spooked the four 1 1/2 y/o's. So it was just the two spikes.
Since I had already passed up one shot, I decided that if another doe were to present itself I would take it. Around 4, the three does and spike popped back out of the woods. I got my gun up and spotted the largest-looking doe, with the scope on her, my heart was pounding. She must have been in heat cuz she ran a lil with the spikes behind her, they were real interested in her. She stopped broadside at around 100yds and I took the shot with my uncle's Winchester 7mm. Pure adrenaline. She dropped, and the rest of the deer just looked at her. The rest of 'em just went about their business looking to and from her and us. They didnt bolt til I was all the way out of the shooting house. We got her back up to the house and she weighed 90lbs. I skinned and gutted her. We got both inside tender loins, the back straps, hind quarters, and one shoulder out of her. The ballistic tip bullet made the exit-side shoulder into a bony jelly.
What a great day-great fishing, my first deer, couldn't get much better. I know I'll continue to hunt as long as I can pick up a rifle.
