How's it goin? Sorry long time no talk again, I went out again Saturday night. I caught 3 cats and 2 stripers. The biggest cat was only about 5#, but I missed two really good hits, one really had the bait runner schreeching, pulled up felt him and that was all she wrote.

Well, I guess I don't want to dog the new BOC too much before I'm used to it, but it just seems like everything else in life..........It just gets more complicated and harder to figure out, and you just wish it would go back to the way it was! It was all the way up into the bridge at sycamore, but its dropped a bit recently I guess. Looks like good fall fishing for alot of the lakes, I remember two or three years ago, they darn near drained old pine flat during a dry year, they closed trimmer and it was difficult to boat to the inlet. Looks like the opposite this year.

Here's a file on carp info I have collected:

Carp feed by sampling the bottom and sorting out edible and inedible tidbits. They suck objects into their throat for ingestion, and spit out inedible items. Wary carp lightly mouth soft baits, like worms and doughballs. Carp eat until they feel the hook or line, then they reject the bait. The vacuuming power of a carp is strong enough to suck bait outside its mouth until the hook is bare. The angler never knows what happened or gets just a tickle on the pole tip.
Soft baits also cover the hook's barb, which prevents a good hook-set. The hair rig uses hard baits, specifically field corn. (Note: to prepare field corn for bait, soak overnight in water and boil with Kool-Aid and sugar for 30 to 45 minutes.Strawberry and Cherry flavors work well.)
A carp treats field corn differently than soft baits. A carp inhales hard food items, like crayfish, clams, nuts or grain, into the back of its throat where its pharyngeal teeth are located. Pharyngeal teeth grind hard food, like the way our molars grind up popcorn. Similarly, a carp inhales the hair rig and doesn't notice the hook—at first. When it finally feels the hook and tries to expel the rig, the bare hook catches the inside of the carp's mouth. I think the IGFA considers hair rigs to be illegal for record fish.
Once a carp has felt a light sting of the bare hook, it bolts out of the area. If you fish the hair rig with a fixed weight of about two or three ounces, the fish will hook itself when the rig pulls the weight. By the time you see the rod moving, that fish is securely hooked.

Robb, Paul and you other guys that want to try Carping. The most effective way to fish carp for starting out is to buy canned corn the kind you eat. Use a number 12 or smaller treble hook. Use a slip rig and 6 to 8 lb line for leader. Carp are line size sensitive so no large line unless you have to. Thread two cornels of corn on each point of the treble be sure you put the corn on hard side to hard side not through the side that was attached to the husk. O K toss out a handfull of the corn and toss out your rig to that spot and in a while toss out another small amount, carp will come . Leave your line a little slack, when the line tightens just reel and sweep your rod, Fish on! For slip rig I use egg sinker with a very small split shot below it and a 12 inch leader. Some add strawberry koolaid to the corn and other flavors the list goes on and on. I think just the corn is enough untill you have trouble getting bites. keep your drag a little light these guys are strong. The others that have given information are also very correct I have found this method to be the easiest and as good as any.

Hey guys, I went out to Mendota last night, caught two, both pretty small but had a good time. Soaked choves, sonnys, and liver between 6 and 1am. Didnt see too many people out there more so in the back, pretty empty. But it was nice as I have never been back there, that slough runs alot further back than I realized. But I did go to the aqueduct out avenal way and the channel there were impressive, within just a few hours caught 4 4-6 lb channels from a variety of bait including sonnys, choves and shad (frozen). Going back out today a bit earlier so I can try for some of those tasty striper along with a big kitty or two. How long is that gate open at mendota, from some of your old messages I get the feeling its a short period?
