I woke up this morning with an urge to soak a line (like today is any different) and was thinking about new water. So I gave a call to BOC member Catfishslick, you may have read his post about the close call he had coming home from a fishing trip this month. Phil said that he would be happy to go once he completed a meeting this morning, so I said I would swing by his place in a while.
I got dressed had a cup and a bite and hit the road.
After a two hour drive from my house to Taft and another call for specific directions I pulled up a Phil's house. He showed me his home and his projects that he has been working on.
He also showed me the sturdy pole holders that he makes and when I admired his handy work he gave one of them to me.
Thank you, Phil.
They're very nice holders and I'm sure to purchase one like them would be around $10.00.
Well, Phil completed his meeting and we loaded his gear into the back of my old Dodge truck and headed out. From Phil's house to the duct is around 5 miles by road and a short walk of around 200 ft, at least where we went today.
We baited up our hooks and put our lines out and settled down to wait on the whisker fish. I was using Catmando beef liver and Slick was using some special beef liver mix that he made up, yes, he told me what was in it but I figure if he wants to tell any one, it ain't up to me.
While sitting there on the bank we chatted about hunting and fishing, our kids and grand kids and just about anything else that come up.
We never got a bite in the 4 hrs we were out there but I feel the trip was well worth it as I now have a new fishing buddy and hopefully we will get the chance to hunt together in the coming year.
I know the next time I head over into the San Joaquin valley to fish I'll be giving my new friend a call.

Tom, you said that you would take of a the "drop of a hat", so I'm dropping... Come on over Sat. am and we'll check out the ramp at Marina Del Rey, and get some deens or chovies and see if the sandbass, mackerel, bonita, are in a biting mood...... I've got the GPS marks for a bunch of Cod Holes too.... What you say? The drive is much shorter than going over the grapevine all the way to Taft..... I mean you can even get snow going over the "Grape"..... Might even not be able to get home if they close it down.

Sounda good to me Ray, the only thing I have going that week is an overnight trip from Port Hueneme leaving 10pm the 29th onboard the Mirage, provided the weather is good.
But I'm not oppossed to going fishing twice in one week, the more the better, I say.

Ray , I have purchased my '07 licence and will be watching for the reports of the squid rise. You know what that means, so even if the rockfish are closed we could get some decent early fishing this year.
It seem that since we got rid of the gill nets and long liners from inshore waters the White Sea Bass have been starting earlier every year.

I am all down for a WSB trip. Its been a few years for me since I got into those. Also a good yellowtail bite I am all for too. I need to get my saltwater gear back into use. They are getting a little rusty.

Tom, did you get the "full boat" license to include: striper, ocean enhancement, 2 pole stamp, colorado river stamp? How much was it?

by the way, I use the site http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=46025,
and http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=46069 to check the offshore swell, baro, and wind speed to check if I think it is ok to wonder out ....

I haven't been out of Oxnard, or other places near their.... and my boat works..... I haven't been out to those Islands yet????

Ray, I got the ocean stamp and the second rod stamp figured I'd get the river stamp when I head down there. I don't think they have the striper stamp any more.
You should try Channel Islands Harbor some time, it's seldom crowded the launch is self pay (you put the fee in an envelope and drop it in a vault).
There is bait at Cisco's and Anacapa is 11 miles from the harbor breakaway although some of the best fishing is at the south west end of Santa Rosa.
I have been out to Anacapa and just beyond to fish for lings and caught plenty of them right at the first Anacapa island in 50'-60' of water but ran a little further for reds.
I don't know what the range of your boat is, mine is about 200 miles total so I haven't been to the outer islands in my boat.

I have not got my 07 license yet, but will get them right after new years. I get the ocean, river and 2 rod stamp also.

Ray you have to try the Islands sometimes like San Clemente and the Catalina as they both have awesome fishing. If your boat is big enough to get there than I would try it. The overnight boat usually take 4 hours to get there I believe but they are going at 20- 30 knots I think. ( I still do not know knots relations to MPH yet) But the fishing is very good around those grounds. Also the Santa barbara Islands as well as Channel islands.

If you want to enter the halibut derby this April there in Santa Monica let me know. They give away great prizes and I want to participate. I always feel like I have a good chance to win something.

Tom and Brian;

I've fished San Clem. and Catalina many times on charters that another buddy use to put on. We would go to the "butterfly bank" off of Mexico and troll for Albies.... Got a few "tails at Clemente, and of course the good calico fishing. My gas mileage is quite good... used just under 17 gal. going from Cabrillo (San Pedro) all the way to the west end of Catalina. With the 40 gal. tank, I maybe able to get 200 miles without extra gas cans..... The only other Island that I have been with my boat is to is Santa Barbara.... 46 miles one way out of Marina Del Rey.... That day it was flat calm.. both ways. I wore my eyes out "looking"... my buddy knows how to close his eyes and just sit there as Im driving.... No WSB or tails that trip, but I got two big sheepshead, and a million white fish.

My boat is small, but is called the "sea hawk" .....slices through the waves they say, in the advertisment....can take waves over the front and its self bailing.... (see the attached picture)
Is that halibut tourny one by WON or another group... I think that there are two each year.....we'll talk more on the "butts" at San Vee.

That is a nice boat. As a matter of fact, if I was to get one it would be one similar to that. A buddy of mine has one similar but its called the River pro or something in that name range.

I am going to try the V tomorrow and see whats happening. I was tempted to go to Irvine and fish for trout but I will do that next week or next Sat. I'll give a report when I get back.

Hope you get down to V.. for the big Blue... trouting is easy.. power bait and all. I like river trout with spinners like the rooster tail, or a casta bubble and 3/4 lb line for the leader and a fly.

I was comming back from fishing out of Del Rey back a bit, and a bunch of Brothers at the back of this crusier were "partying", one called out and said, "I have a boat like yours" and I turned around and went back and said that "then you must fish at Irvine?" and "you must be Ronson? Yes he said... They were partying on dads boat. You've been on it before haven't you?

Back to my morning fishing off the rocks now.... nothing for the macks, try again in the morning... got to get some fresh bait.

LOL. Small world isn't it. Yeah I been on his pops boat. I fished the Del Rey halibut derby on it a few times. But yeah catmandos boat is just like yours. Lots of room inside. He does not take it out on the ocean so he just uses it on fresh water.

I can not wait to get mine. I like the color blue cause it fits my name but I will look for a green one or purple, something flashy. I may have to get it custom painted. If all things go well I should have one in the next year and a half. But I been saying that for the last 4 years. LOL.

BTW I lost one at the V today. It just poped loose after setting the hook. It was a big blue that ran hard. I let it peel for about 15 seconds and he still was not hooked :confused2: Therefore I was skunked. But thats how it goes sometimes. A guy I know however got a 41 pounder.

Fished Aqueduct water today... One of he last stops all the way from Tracey is Perris Lake. I decided to let it warm up a little before departing my in-laws in Sunneymead. As I was getting my thoughts together on just where I wanted to shore fish, the limited access to my favorite place was even more limited.... The Lake is down to "half mask" so as to imporve the dam structure.... I use to like to ride my bike out onto the dam, but with the 911 scare, you cant walk on the dam, but you can take a bass boat full of gasoline and or other stuff right up next to to it. Go figure the logic on that. Well since I did not want to climb nearly 100 feet of Rip/rap with my bum back and knes, I decided to walk down the side of a launch ramp and walk across to where the rip/rap met the sand... "a good choice" with my body feeing the way that it did.

Wouldn't you know it.... The "float tube" guy that had just got his gear together was down there launcing right out of where I was going to fish...

He was there first, and I could only hope that he would kick his way out "knowing that I was going to cast right where he was launching".....Fat chance.... I put up the chair, drove in my spike, sat down, baited up my sorry XXX anchovies and threw the mussy mess into the water.. I thought about one of the threads on BOC... "how long would you sit before moving"? well, I went for "my Max" of 30 min. with one bait..... Minnows might have tried to suck the juices from the bait, but nothing.... Just like baseball... "no hit no runs and no errors"....I re-baited and throwed it out there one more time, and again sat for the max of time.....Even the boy.... "grown Men" that were walking the shore pitching "Giant" rainbow trout immatators got nothing.... I saw lots of boats comming off the water.... no one said they caught anything..

"Just the calm before the storm" Sould have walked to some hard to get to places...... Cant catch them all the time.... Thats catching, and I was only fishing.....

Tough fishing this time of year at Paris, Ray. I have a friend that lives near to the lake and fishes it year round. He says that this time of year the best fishing is for large blue gills and trout, 'course he's a bass fisherman and doesn't fish for the whiskers. Bass now are mostly in deep water there but I don't know about cats, I do know that I have been out at this time of year and caught trout on cut mac's while trying for cats around by Bernasconi beach at night, no catfish though.

What do you mean "not that I need one"? I always need a new pole, reel, lure or whatever, there is no such thing as too much fishing gear.
I ordered it from procatfish.com for $32.50 plus shipping. I also ordered some Lighthouse floats (slip floats) that use 3" cyalume tubes for fishing at night and a box of tubes to combine shipping. Took about 8 days to get the pole but that was just before Christmas.

Windy up here also today
Ray I buy mine at Taylor Tackle on Sherman Way in Canoga Park. Len Taylor was the one that turned me on to them.
I was in Turners in Reseda today to pick up some pre rigged ganions for Fridays trip on the Mirage with my son in law and looked for the grubs in blood color but they have never have had them. Last time I was there I asked the manager to get the blood ones but I don't think she cared.
The pink ones and the white ones work also but I think the dark red seems to produce the quickest bites.

Tom, I have to go back to work monday.... a full week... thats going to stange with all the days off that I just had.

I'll need some time friday afternoon/ evening to get ready... besides, I thought that we could stop at the "bait bucket" in Bakersfield. I have not been there and want to see what I can get there for future trips.

We have the place in compton (rainbow bait) that supplies worms, crawlers, dads, and other things like water dogs, but its been awhile that I've been there as well. Other than the Vermont bait and tackle (now out of business.. you probably saw them in WON a time one two). I like to check out "good" tackle shops.

Thats got me thinking...... I might go to fishermans hardware in Santa Fe Springs... Their parent store in Long Beach is for sale and they may have a overstocked inventory problem. That old store was next to Joe Jost... "Famous old Beer bar" on Anaheim st.

Oh, What the Hell, we may as well get out of town late fri nite, and then we can fish the aduct at "quail lake" It'll be real cold..You got a piece of that cold at Pyramid Lake... I'll bring the portable heater. I might bring my snomobile boots "Pack Boots" to keep the feet warm... what you say about the new departure time.

As far as bringing equipment, I have a pole rack at the back of the RV for 5 poles.... It gets dusty back there on the dirt roads though..But in the RV I can carry maybe 15 poles of various lengths up overhead out of the way...so bring what you feel you may need... I always keep rods in there for what I call "Road Fishing"

PS... for gods sake dont bring that "salt water" TB I'll have to add trailer wheels on the back of the RV anyway just to carry you and me in it.

Boy you "Back East Guys" dont know how lucky you got it. Out here in "fish-in-nator" land we have to drive to get to get to fishing holes. And when I say drive, you need a good "transportating vehicles" to get you to where you want to fish.
Out here if one is departing "out of town" you have to have reliable wheels to get up and over the "Grape Vine", which is one of the most god awful places to drive over in the middle of the night.
It use to be one hell of a drive on the old road, and is easier now that it is an interstate freeway. But still, you have to go over a 4000 mountain pass that may get ice and snow on it, especially when we are having a cold spell like we are having now.
It can kick the butt out of most flat landers cars because of the long 6% grade that takes one out of the Los Angles area, and North over the mountains into the Sacramento Valley.
If you wanted to get out of town to the east to fish in the Colorado River, you best think longer about it because of two or three good hills to drive over, and the desert wind, heat, and sandstorms.

You have to have several days to do "fishing" out of town here in Los Angles. You can always go to one of the local pay lakes and catch big fish while standing next to many other fishermen, and you might even like the music on his "guetto blaster"
However I wanted to take a some fellow BOC members on a "scouting party" to the delta area of the Sacramento River, and so we departed from Fresno after picking up brother Robb.

When I say that we drove to Mendota, we did this process for some 30 minutes going to the "secret spot".
What a nice area to fish, and when it is warm and not freezing I am sure that it can porduce some fine fish. (I have seen pictures of fish from here)

The only fishing technique that I personally did not try this week end, was fishing with my "swim feeder" attachment for the traditional slip sinker setup. This feeder, is a home made "stink bait container" that holds the weight in it and also some stink bait. (you have to add the stink)
This rig is really cool if you are working in heavily wooded areas, or in rocky area as well. You just throw out like you would normally do and leave it there until you want to bring it in.
When you get a fish on, just do like you normally do, and wind in the fish.

If you are not getting bit, (and that happened a lot this weekend), and it is time to move on, (and this is important), then get the slack out of the line by reeling down as you point the rod, and when you feel the weight, you then crank like hell, and lift the pole up high, and the swim feeder will come up to the top of the water, and then continue cranking, as the feeder "water skis" back to the shore, where, (and this is important) you then drop the pole down as you crank and then lift and pull the rig up and over the rip-rap or stuff on the bank and to where you are standing.
It takes practice to learn this method but it is sometimes the only way to get your complete rig back into your hand when it is "way down there" in the canal or slough.

Wishing I were fishing... bayrunner ray

I'm a good swimmer ( swam competitive since I was 6 years old) water doesn't scare me unless it's over 60 feet LOL same with being up high i'm good to 60 feet then things start getting smaller.

No I haven't tried anything for motion sickness, the only time I went out to sea was way back in highschool , went out and that day just so happened STORM hit and we were UP and DOWN like a bobber in , well a storm LOL it was horrible even the best of them got sick that day, so I swore off ever going out to far in the sea, I'll surf fish but thats about it.

I guess you'll never know the thrill of a screaming drag as a 25 lb yellow tail runs off 50 yds of line from your "I think 30 lb is heavy enough" reel while you wonder "is he ever going to stop".
You should give it another try, I mean, I love fishing in both small water and large but, anyway you look at it salt water fish are just tougher than fresh.

Yeah, maybe sooner at Channel Islands when the WSB get going. Their a lot of fun also, especially when they get up around 50lbs.

Vini, even the best of us get sick at sea once in awhile... Twice in my life (at sea) the others I dont think were sea sickness... any way, they have all kinds of stuff out there to help you..... I alway just ignore the fact that im in deep water....I would only get that feeling if I was in a life raft 100 miles out or so by myself....got to put grease in your stomach, french frys etc.... You got to just not lay down if you feel it comming. Your missing some good fishing by being "non ocean".. Just stay up an and play poker or watch the xxx videos... they might have on the boat. Tom and I will keep you in mind when things start happening....

Early White Sea Bass could start as soon as the market squid start to show in good numbers at the Channel Islands. Late next month sometime the 'but bite should start to move into shallower water, 10 fathoms or less, depending on the water temp. April is usually the best time for major WSB and halibut action with the bite peaking in May. But being fishermen we are by our nature optimists.

You guys are killin me here LOL I'll give it another try someday, maybe sooner then later. One thing i'd love to catch is a yellowfin.

I love the sea it's my favorite place to be one regret I may end up with at death could be that i never lived by the sea it's been a secret dream of mine for years.

My people on my Dads side were sea people they were from Sicily and lived in citys of Trabia, Termini and Caccomo right on the coast .

I love sea food probably more then any food we have ( other then salmon unless its in pattys:smile2: ) .

Are those giant squid your talking about Tom and what are WSB's?

Guys got my oil pressure up here:tounge_out:

Vini,
Market squid are the small ones like you get when you order calamari rings.
Those giants are called Humboldt squid.
All S. Ca. big water anglers wait for the Market squid to start showing in large numbers because the White Sea Bass follow them, it's their favorite food and they are dependant on them. Yellow-tail also feed heavily on them so when they get going good, it can quickly turn into a wide open bite (WOB). There is a reason squid is called candy bait, everything eats it.
And while WSB will eat anchovies and sardines, nothing makes better bait for them than squid.

I've only seen pictures of the humbolt squid there enormous. I love the stuff myself especially the tentacles fried up in olive oil and garlic and the bodys stuff with garlic stuffing and dunked down in spagetti sauce thats how my grandmother used to make them Unnn mmmmm

That certainly sounds good to me. The steaks from those Humboldt's are called poor mans abalone. You just tenderize them a little and then bread them and pan fry them over a high heat til the breading starts to brown. That's the best way to eat calamari steaks.
