I own a merc 15 and hit an underwater stump and broke the "pivot" on the motor. The engine mechanic charged me $400 bucks to get it fixed. Has this happened to anyone else, and did a get ripped off?

No but 400 sounds a little pricey?

Hank I had that happen in 1987 on a 9.9 OB I was using on a 26 ft sloop.I was on the intercoastal waterway on the east coast of Fla and was many miles to where I could use the sails so I had to lash down the motor to finish the trip.As for fixing the OB I just found an old junked out one and swapped parts at little cost.

$400 bucks sounds about right. Add the word marine, add 25% to the cost of any part or repair!!! My best friend did the same thing at a remote fishing camp in Canada a couple of years ago. It's the price we all pay to have a hole in the water we throw money in called a boat.

It just seems too easy to do, it's like Jim said he just swapped them out. They kept the dang thing in the shop for 4 weeks, this is why I try to keep everything DIY.
