While driving north over the Kaw on 435 I noticed some work being done on the low head dam.
Does anyone know what might be going on down there? Are they increasing the height of the dam?
It looks like they are building some type of structure on the north side of the dam.

Wade,
I've heard that they are building a water treatment plant for the City of Olathe. Supposibly it will cut off all bank fishing access to that spot as well. I'm sure if that happens a lot of people will be upset as that is a favorite bank fishing spot.

Yeah, I had been wondering about it myself. I bet that is the most heavily fished spot on the river, it will be sad if they block it off. There is a pretty good highway department right of way that we could build a new path through, but somehow I doubt that they will let us get too close to the water intake when it's all finished.

I read on water1.org that they are preparing to bore a tunnel under the river for two 60" main water lines. The treatment plant is going to be on the missouri river. There is a map of the whole project on that site that explains where everything is going to be. Fishing access should still be good once the construction is done.

Trevor, It’s good to see you back on. What you are saying sounds promising – once the pipeline is laid, things should return to normal.

Jason , if your going north on 435 , its the exit before the river. That side of the river is Johnson County Waterworks property though. If they see a car parked along the road down there on Holiday Dr. , they have been known to bring the cops down there and escort people out of there. The best way to do it is to have someone drop you off , and come pick you up later. If they dont see a car, then they probably wont know your down there. At least I believe that would work in the daytime. If you do it that way in the night time, I would use as little light as possible. :cool2:
