This lake is the catfishing giant of So Cal. It will be closing sometimes in 08 for a dam building project for about 5 years so I am going to put my time into the lake before that happens. Meanwhile my son and I went yesterday. I had opportunities but came up short about 4 times on nice blue runs. I will be back though they can not whip me twice in a roll. This is what we came up with. I got a 7 pound blue and my son got a 11 plus pounder. Both caught on fresh cut bonita. Also the slip bobber was doing well on this day. Until next time fisherman and fisherladies, Peaces!

Brian good job out there at San Vee and Congratulations to Little B too! That's one nice fish that young man is holding.
I've never been to San Vee but I think I need to give it a shot real soon.
I can't wait to see your next posts. I'm hoping to see you break your San Vee record real soon.

Thanks Terry. San Vee is indeed my favorite cat lake in Cali next to Irvine. Whenever you can make it or is going with trolly let me know and I will fill you in on the details about where to go and what to look for. Its a blast seeing those fatties sound the clicker. I hope I can get the record also. I may have had it already judging by how some cats handled me in the past there.

We may just give San Vee a try. We also looked at some promising territory at Castaic yesterday so we may seriously try that too.

Try Dixon lake..... got rental boats, excellent camping and they have an outstanding summer cat fishing with the rentals till 11pm....

Guess that I'll have to leave the beach, and go down and try "sanvee"

Dale I was quessing. I played around with the slip until I saw that the bobber was not laying on its side so it was close to the bottom not high above the bottom. Using the length of my rod for measure on my 7 foot pole it was at 21feet. I fished my usual spot so I know about that area pretty much.

Kyle, I've been a couple of times since the trout were stocked. We caught plenty of them on the troll. I was able to get one up to the boat that was easily 10lbs but it broke off before we could get the net on it.
Our main reason for going was the cats. My buddy got a nice one but they just weren't biting. I'm sure it was due to all the boat activity.
We may go back to Casatic this weekend for the stripers. I caught my first striper last Sat. It weighed in at 7.0lbs.

Also terry when you get your bobbers, get the ones that are 8 - 10 inches. I found out that the 6 inch ones do not hold large baits well. So for the size of the bait we throw, the 8- 10 inch ones would be the one. 10 being the one for the giant baits and 8 for the moderate size ones.

It was a good day on the water. Could have been better without a few mishaps but nevertheless I'll take it. I used the bonita that I had laced for me from a bro. Started out with the slip bobber at 21 feet. Caught a 12 pounder around 7am on it. Then around 11 got another one around 14 pounds. Then around 2 got a ten pounder. 3pm finally got something worthy at 30.45 pounds. Then around 4pm I make a cast and get a backlash. I am fumbling around with this mess for a few minutes than all of a sudden something pulls hard. I grab it with my hand and it pulled hurting my hands so I wrap it around my arm but to no avail the thing was not to be stoped so it eventually snapped.

I was 4 for 7 today losing 2 to dropping the hook and one to a mishap. One of them was not to be stopped at all. The blues are running yahh. I am going to be up on them. The slip bobber got 3 and one was caught on the bottom. Fished around the infamous blue spot. It seemed that they were not on the bottom. Heres a few pics. God Bless!

Brian, my question is where do you get your fresh bonito? I catch a lot of them but after freezing them they always seem to fall apart when casting with them. I remember you stating that you prefer to flyline large pieces, but what weight line do you like to use? And do you use slip bobber rig at times? What length rod do you prefer? Any particular weight rod?
I ask about the rods because I just purchased two new reels on eBay, Abu 5000 and 6000 to try out Garcia's product and will have to purchase rods to go with them. I haven't used Garcia since the were Mitchel/Garcia but I hear a lot of people saying they prefer them.

I get the bonito from people that give them to me. I never have a problem with them falling apart. More so with mackeral than the bones.

I use 30-40 pound test at San V and 25 at Irvine. Sometimes I use the slip bobber but not all the time. I do better with the slip early in the morn. The weight class of my rod is 20-40 pound and 20-50 pound. I like the tiger rod and also the boss rods at 7 foot and also 7.5 foot. My reels are the abu garcia 7000 big game. Those reels do the job for me.

Hey fellas I went to the V today. It was a tough go. I sat in one spot the whole day because I used a row boat. Another buddy name preston was there as well. Light rain during the morning hours but it tapered off later and then remained partly cloudy for the rest of the day. No touched for me all day until 350pm. I had one run. A good run at that and I set the hook for nada. It poped out. That was the only touch I had on a mackeral head. Buddy preston had the same faith happen to him 15 minutes before mine and he missed his as well. Another guy at another spot we knew lost one as well so we were in te farmers club today. The one guy we know that ended up getting his was Dave and it was a 41 pounder at a spot unknown. Thats how it goes sometimes. My last two trips were skunk trips but I had at least one opportunity each time. San V is like that sometimes if you are fishing for giants you may get one run or no runs at all but hopefully you can make it count. The bluegill however are biting well as another bud Cody raked up on them in the aqueduct area some were even in the pound range. Nice fatties that we all would love. Later he tried for the cats but was nada on that as well. Well thats it, got the skunk trail and the farmers hat on. I will break that spell soon though.

I never been to Casitas I know of a few people that do go there but its always slow pickings there. I do know that the record there is in the 30's and its is a channel. They do not have blues there according to their information. The only lakes in so cal that has them is Vicente, Irvine, Otay, Sutherland, El capitan, Jennings and Diamond valley. And some of the private lakes like Hesperia sticks them in there. The ones at Diamond valley has not really materialized yet into often being caught, but they did put some in there when they opened up 5 years ago.

I had an opportunity at the V but thats how the ball bounces sometimes. This week I have to go to the Dentist and also my little Boy. I hate those co payments. LOl. Lausd has some of the lamest dental insurances out there. I went earlier and spent more than I anticipated as co payment. Thats cutting into my fishing money.

I got to get down to San V. before the bite stops. A couple of guys I used to work with that live down that way have expressed an interest in learning to catfish, maybe I can get out there with them.
Any suggestions as to where to fish?

bluehunter
12-18-2006, 09:04 PM
There are a few spots there depending on if you want blues or channels.

The blue spots are basically the dam. The Toll arm and also around the island. If you are targeting blues you have to be very patient and wait it out. The channels are higher in numbers there and can be found easier in kimball arm, barona, chimney, and Toll arm. Grassy bay also is known to put out channels. Those are your traditional cat spots there. If this is going to be a wet season than I say the bite will keep going throughout winter. San V cats can be caught year round there I have found.

I was flylining heads. The blue cats bite all winter long at San V through April eventhough some are caught summer there as well. But the bulk of them are caught Fall throughout the winter. So that date will be a good date still.

Was suppose to explore channel spots during the 1st half of the day and then buckle down for the blues from noon to closing. After the new years like on the 5th I know I will be there cause thats when I get paid.:smile2: We can go that Friday. Also prior to that during the week after the new year if you want to go get fresh dead for half a day I am for it as I am needing some new bait.

After tomorrow its a party scene till Monday. We may bring in the new year at a local casino I do not know which one yet (Pechanga, San Manuel, or Morongo.) We normally be in Vegas this time of year. New Years day I am bbqing and we are also having Gumbo.

So the next San Diego run will be on the 5th. If you can do that let me know. I could also do the 6th but that day is catchy because I have a trout derby at Santa Ana River Lakes to participate in on that Sunday the 7th and I also have to get ready for back to work for the 8th.

New info regarding San vicente for the 07. Due to the dam construction that is taking place at the lake, san v will be open on a Saturday and Sunday basis only. So after the New Year fishing will only occur on the weekends for fishing only. Still no private boaters allowed as of yet until the water raises.

This kind of sucks that it is only open on the weekends. Remember in 08 the lake is to close for the reconstruction project for an estimated 5 years.

We went to San V today despite the high wind warnings. What a beautiful day on the lake. Weather was great. No wind like expected as a matter of fact and the water was relatively calm most of the day. We arrived in the morn and came up with a plan to bounce around for the 1st half of the day and then buckle down in the eve for the blues. I had my panfish rod just in case we ran into some nice gills to put on the frier. We hit The Aqueduct, Toll Arm. and then the final blue spot.

First off at the duct we ran into some biters. I had a few. The prince capitalized on his and got his PB channel at 16.85 pounds. Thats a nice channel. After a while we bounced like planned in 2 hrs to the Toll Arm. I got one pan sized bluegill there on a crawler fished off the bottom, and missed on cat run that took me into a snag. Thats was it.

We then went to the buckle down spot and sat for the evening runs. I had one run that was dropped and that was it. It was a good run too but can not get them all thats how the ball rolls. Keith had a few channel runs as well.

Did not get the blue today but did come away with a good fish nevertheless in a double digit channel which does not happen often. Will definitely be back at the V soon. I have a feeling that 07 will have many plus 50 pounders in the ranking. San V is doing really good lately with 8 big blues landed from November to now. There was a 52 pounder landed from the chimney there on Dec 24th.

Nice fishing with ya keith! Here are a few pics from channel hood

We went looking for the cats at DVL and found that our favorite spot is now out of the water by a good twenty feet so we had to go looking. We found a spot that I think will produce but it is going to take some work. I was able to get four good runs but, like catfishing goes sometimes, I came up short. I really think the way to fish it is with the bobbers. I'm going to need a lesson from a pro.

I will be giving the D a chance one day. I think it has great potential. Sooner or later the hawgs will be coming out of there. as far as the bobber go, that is something that I will be using often as well. We did not get anything on the last outing with the bobbers, but I really do like using it. I am going to give it a good run at irvine as well when the cat season starts there because I see a lot of those cats in mid depth range on the scanner. I think the reason why a lot of the big blues are not caught during the summer months there is that a lot of the blues are at or below the thermocline level where the plankton and the baitfish are at. If we can present our bait at that level I believe we could see some good results. I personally like the 10-12 inch bottlenecks and cigars one. I been using the Cigars at the 12 inch one mostly and it cast far. I also collected a few other slip floats as well for testing but I am pleased with the cigar and bottlenecks I told you about. The 12 inch one sticks out of the water high enouigh where you do not have to strain your eye to see it. Plus it add to the cast it seems with distance.

One of the BOC members have a good read on slip bobbers. That should give you more insight.

Brian thanks for the post and link to the slip bobber infor. I use that system when getting macks in the harbor... when they are there! I use a small treble hook and push two of hooks close together and then bend them out away from the shank.. opening it up some.... Then I put 2 hooks in the back of the chovie and throw it out... I like straight fly lining too, but the float kind of helps with sticking them..

My boat is certified for the big D... we'll have to give it a go sometime. I agree that the thermocline is the key to this lake...I have been there three times... first was a boat ride "check it out cruise" with the wife, actually we were staying at Pechanga.. me in the hot tub and my wife on the "wheel of fortune". The other times it was D in the morning, and Skinner in the afternoon.... Not spending much time on either...Thats the key

Dale I talked to keith earlier and he said that one of the workers told him maybe next week.

The water level is raising most definitely and it is ready now for boaters to launch IMO. We have to keep up with the bulletin of san diego city lakes to know for sure or contact their number. No doubt it will be real soon for private boaters after the New Year.

Went fishing to San Vicente in anticipation of a fat blue. The blues have been elusive at San V the last month but Hey someone has to break the ice! I meet up with a buddy (Lowe) in the morning and went out on his boat. The plan was to target the channels and bluegill for the morning hours and then switch to the blues during the evening hours. We went to Kimball arm at first to look for channels but they were not there. Later we went to another spot around a point and sat. I put out a bluegill rod with a nightcrawler and soon pulled up a fat gill big as my hand. Lowe later pulled up a yellow bullhead at about a pound one of the biggest ones I seen. After a while decided to move to a few other locations with no luck so we went back to the guaranteed channel spot at the point and sat out until the eve time at 12:45. Lowe pulled up a nice 7.14 ounce channel cat on cut bonito. I had a run that came unbuttoned but did manage to pull up another fat gill at hand size. We than decided to target the blues and hopefully some more fat gills. Got to the spot and sat. The gills kept things interesting at the spot as I pulled up another nice gill. Lowe pulled up a fat red ear at about a pound. We got a few more small gills.

The cats were elusive for us today as I missed a good run and lowe did also. Still had fun and whenever you get into some nice pan fry of gills its a good trip. Will be back out there soon and hopefully get into some trophy blues and some more good eating panfish.

Good fishing with you Lowe!

Brian, it's good to see that your back on the water after the accident. I just got back from a run up to Pleasant Valley Reservoir. It was a long tiring weekend for me but it was well worth it. Trollmiester and I caught a lot of rainbows and browns at a spot Trout Only took us to. It was well worth it.
If anyone can come up with some good cats I know it is you and it looks to me like Lowe had a good day. Great Job Brian.

Thanks Terry. Sounds like a great trip you had on trout. I am looking forward to a sierra trip sometime this summer.

Brian, that trip to PVR was much needed and well worth it. We didn't catch any monster browns but the ones I caught were very colorful and healthy. Nothing like the stocker trout we're used to catching in So. Cal.
