Well I am sitting here looking at the local paper and a 76 year old man has broke the world record channel cat. The state record was 44.5# and the world record was 58#, his channel wieght in at 63#. He was caught on a bush hook and cut bait. He was caught on the Chatawhatchee river, just miles up the road from me. What a trip, and I thought there were no big cats in there. LOL.

MAN THAT'S A MONSTER! My goal has been to catch a 60+ pound blue, but now i want a 60+ pound channel! our state record is only 33 so it might take a while.

Got any pics of that beast?

I dont mean to be a party pooper but I'm pretty sure it turned out to be a blue cat. They say it took a long time for the biologists to find out but they confirmed it to be a blue. This is not solid evidence but there was alot of talk on another forum about this and thats what was said.

Well the article said that the wildlife commission said it was a channel, I guess the best thing to do is look on the net at the records.

I'm pretty to sure to be a world record the fish has to be caught on rod and reel.

Thats correct, but if it is a channel its still a trophy none the less.

chris,
if that was a wells catfish it would still be a trophy for me, I'm still struggling with the 40lb mark targeting blues and flatheads. Santee cooper didn't get it for me in the 3 years I was there so now I'm hoping to hit it on the Altamaha.

Thanks for sharing I was wondering if any other state could hold the record as SC has held it far to long.

I read that it was a Blue catfish.
Also according to the article in The Herald, it was caught on a "bush hook", so that would have negated it being a world record anyway.
I'll check if my friends at the FWC here in Orlando know anything about it.

A bush hook can still get a world record, its just not an IGFA type record. World record sized fish, not "world record caught on rod and reel" or "caught by alternative mothods... i.e, noodling, bowfishing" I beleive.

I feel pretty retarded for asking this but what is a bush hook? is that a limb line?

Yeah, I think it's about the same as a limbline. Too bad that fish had to be wasted on one of those.

yes a bush hook, limb line or as the rednesk up here call them bush-bobs all are the same. A line tie off to a bush or limb of a tree with a hook at the other end.

I just learned of this fish last week. I too was excited about a huge channel cat being caught right here in FL. But alas, it was not too be. I called around and talked to Dan Dobbins who is a good contact for flatheads also and he said it was a blue cat. Dan works for the state wildlife commission as a biologists. There has been some big channels caught from that river though and a 46 pounder was shocked up by a sampling boat owned by the state. Problem is though that flatheads are now in the system and the best days of huge channels for that river are coming to a close.

I agree it's a shame it wasn't C.P.R ed. But if it's a channel then it's a big one.
