Well after getting off to a slow start to the Fall fishing season because of the salinty level in the marsh, we finally got some much needed rain. And boy did it make a difference. I made a trip last week-end and caught 29 and I made a trip yesterday and caught 61. I finally got to put away some meat in the freezer. Here are a couple of pics.

You got that boat fixed just in time. That's a couple of good day.

You see anything of any red fish, or did the fresh water run them out?

Thanks guys. Bob I caught one Bull Red about 25-30 pounds and released him to fight another day. The Reds that I have been catching are either too small or to big lol. Would like to catch some eating size ones to cook on the half shell on the pit.

Oh and by the way Bob, the boat is running great. She's purring like a kitten. Thanks again for the help getting her back right.

Bud, we did fry up some catfish tonight and made a shrimp gumbo. Man you talk about dat was some good stuff ya lol. Wish I could send you guys some.

Talk to y'all later, Randall.

Hello all. My name is Mark and Im new to the Brotherhood so go easy on me. I am relatively new to the area (but not fishin) and have just in the last month been able to get out and go catfishing. A few coworkers got me goin to Lake Fausse Point State Park, which I have the last three weekends. I usually stay in the park waters due to boat restrictions. Last weekend the water was up and muddy but we caught 13 good sixe blues. Saturday I went back, the water was much better and I caught 37. THere seems to be alot of crabs there, Im not use to dealing with that, but there are alot of good spots. I used mostly nightcrawlers but seem to get larger fish when I add a piece of hotdog soaked in garlic powder. I got a few blues on shad.

WHat do yall use for bait and how big do the blues get in the basin?

Welcome to the BOC cannonball! I haven't been to Lake Fausse Point in forever, but last time I went, there were gar all over....now that I think about it, thats where I need to go once the water starts warming up again (and I'm JUST NOW DECIDING THIS while I had all summer?!?).

And I hear ya on the crabs. I fish the Vermilion River here in Lafayette and a while back was catching 5 crabs to every 1 catfish, and there wasn't any way I was eating those crabs from that river.

THanks for the reply. I was beginning to think I was being looked over due to my newness! I went back Saturday and didnt do to well. I caught 8, 4 of which were around 2 lbs, but it was hard fishing. Between the wind and the front moving through earlier that morning I think I was doomed from the start. In the next couple of weeks, I plan on getting a larger boat and Ill start goin to the Rivers (Red, Ach. and Miss.) Things should pick up for me there.

Welcome to the BOC Cannonball. I made a fishing trip to the marsh last weekend and did really well. I ended up with 52 cats, one Red, and one Speck. I also caught 15 hugh crabs. Hre is a pic of the fish.

Thats pretty awesome! I didn't realize you could catch blues and trout/redfish in the same area. Then again I've caught ladyfish here in the Vermilion river in Lafayette (cast net), and there are even stories of people catching sand trout here.

12-19-2006, 05:37 PM
What are you using as bait? shrimp?

scout
12-20-2006, 07:45 AM
Stu, I usually use what I can catch in my cast net, shrimp, pogey and mullet. This time of the year the bait is really scarce though.

12-21-2006, 07:31 PM
How deep is the area you are fishing in scout?
Im new to the site and, like stu, hadn't heard of marsh catfishing, which, like you said, seems to be an awesome concept....the ability to catch reds, trout, and cats at the same spot.

scout
12-22-2006, 07:40 AM
Hey Chris. The water in the marsh can be from inches to at the most 12 feet. This time of the year with the northern cold fronts the water gets extremely low. The local marine patrol spends alot of time pulling out stuck boaters with their airboat.

StuBone278
12-22-2006, 10:33 PM
That's interesting.. I've fished around the marsh at Big Lake with Chris, and everything seems very shallow except the shipping channel. When you fish these marshes, do you just find a hole or what?

scout
12-24-2006, 03:33 PM
Hey Stu. I always look for deep holes in the marsh. That is about the only places that I will fish. It seems the only places that hold cats in numbers.

scout

LOL, Joe is right, what I consider a hole is anything over my head lol:roll_eyes: . The marsh is very shallow and sometimes it is very hard to navigate. But there is no ather place I would rather be.

Scout,
I fish off of a OK Prowler Kayak and planning to visit your neck of the woods in the spring. I'm originally from Kaplan and I have some kin living in Erath. Any suggestions where I can get some good size cats. How about Ops. I tried out Lake Fause Point one afternoon, but was only out there for a couple of hours, with little luck. How is Lake Peigneur for fishing catfish? Any suggestions on good spots and put-in would be appreciated.

Hey there Randall,

I'm trying to "build up" enough posts to view your pictures. I know those have got to be some nice cats. I hope you and your family are doing well. Tell Tabitha I say hello.

I can't wait to get out into the bay. I'm really enjoying this nice weather. I also think it's fine time to get a fishing trip together. :smile2: Especially before it gets hot.

We've been catching a few catfish on jug lines and some really nice sac a lait not far from my house. We're gonna give them another try again tomorrow. Casey really wanted to to join us, but he's taking care of "business" to get married in June. LOL. Seeing pictures of these fish are gonna make him squirm. He'll have to settle for the fried version.

It's nice to be browsing on the BOC. Teaching has been keeping me really busy.

Take care.

Hello everyone. I had put the boat up for the Summer when the temps got into the 90's. Whoever thought we would get into the 50's in late may. I just had to go fishing. Me and my wife went and we winded up with 51 cats. We also landed and released a 30 pound Redfish and two 30 pound plus Black Drum. Man did they fight. While my wife was fighting the Redfish a Gator about 10 feet long got a hold of the Redfish. We pulled up the anchor and went to the Redfish's rescue. He held on till we got close and scared it away with the boat. The Redfish did not have a mark on him and was released unharmed. My wife said that Red really put up a fight with a Gator attached to it lol. Here is a pic of our catch.

The weather finally cooled off this week-end and me and my wife decided to go fishing. We got us a nice South Louisiana mix of Redfish, Catfish, and Bluepoint Crabs. We end up with just over 2 dozen crabs and just got through eating them. And man you talk about that was some good stuff ya lol:smile2:. Tomorrow we plan on eating the Redfish on the halfshell cooked on the pit. I hope everyone had a good week-end.:006:

Shane, those fish were caught in the marsh. It is right on the salt/fresh water line. So you never know what you will catch.

Dewayne, you are right about a seafood platter:big_smile:. We even had a few pounds of some very large shrimp that we had caught in the cast net. We threw that in with the boiled crabs.

I sure am looking foward to the next cool front. Good luck to all, Randall.:006:

If I count all the fish that I released for being too big I had caught over 100 fish. Here are a few pics of my trip. The biggest Cat of the day was 22 pounds and was released.I also had some Redfish go over 30 pounds which were also released. I also threw in a pic of my Catfishing rig. I've been looking at some satellite pictures and trying to determine where me and stu will go for the first marsh fishing adventure in his 14 foot boat. I'm debating launching out of intercoastal city and going south to some canal systems. Do you think that a 14 foot flat bottom can handle the intercoastal with the boat traffic? I'm fairly confident about the fishing aspect of the trip, but i'm sort of up in the air on if his boat will tolerate the conditions. I don't know if you are familiar with this area or not, but i thought this may be your fishing area and it wouldn't hurt to ask before risking something.

Hello fellow Louisianians. I hope everyone is having a good Summer. Man it sure is hot lol:ooooh:. Now that we are in August, I am starting to count the weeks to when I start my fishing season. Last year we had a nice cool front come through the second week of September. If that happens again this year I have about six weeks left:big_smile:. I am getting very hopped up lol:wink:. I usually fish till it gets hot again about late april early may.

I got some great news a few days ago. My good friend and fishing partner, Joe Ware (gofish) is moving back to his home state of Louisiana. He will be living in Baton Rouge which is about 2 hours from me. The man has brackish water running in his veins and he will be very happy living near the marsh again. He will also have near him a new very big Bass Pro Shops that just opened up:big_smile:.

08-03-2008, 09:57 PM
That tropical storm is really close to us. We are feeling a little of it's effects now. I work at PHI in Lafayette. We have a base in Galveston and it looks like we will have to bring our helicopters to safety in Lafayette because it looks like the storm is heading that way. I use to work in Intracoastal City, right near the marsh where I fish, but Hurricane Rita wiped us out. We had 7 feet of water in our hanger. We have sinced moved our base to Lafayette at the airport. It is safer there but I sure miss being close to the waters that I fish. I use to bring my boat to work and make some afternoon fishing trips.

Cooler weather is not that far off and I think I can hear the marsh starting to call me lol.

Hello everyone, I hope everyone is doing fine. I have gotton off to a slow start this year with my Fall catfishing due mostly to the 2 hurricanes that hit us recently. I scratched pretty bad my first couple of trips because of the low oxygen levels because of the hurricanes.

The fishing is starting to get better lately. Here are a few pics of some of my latest fishing trips. The pic where the built in ice chest in my boat is full has over 90 fish in it. Most of those fish were caught on Sickle hooks that I got from Pete at Wild Wolf Products. They work really well, thanks Pete.

12-24-2008, 10:47 AM
Hey Stu, I went last Saturday and boy the fog was bad lol. The fishing was terrible but the crabbing was great. Ended up with about 6 dozen large crabs. Caught them all crabbing off the boat. I would like to go back Friday if the weather holds.:006:

WildWillie
12-24-2008, 11:26 AM
What you using for crab bait? Chicken? Deep water?

We're down on the TX coast. Crabbing is a no go in the shallow water here this winter. Guess the water is too cold. We were catching plenty here last winter at this time; in fact, all winter. I've talked to some of the commercial crabbers, and they say the crabs are scarce this year. Of course, we didn't have much cold weather last year.

We spent a couple nights at Betty's RV Park there in Abbeville a couple summers ago. Wife was doing some genealogy, and we visited a cemetery there in Gueydan. Also stayed at Burn's Point, and Grand Isle State Park. We have thought of moving back to LA, but economics won't allow it right now. May be in the future though.

Merry Christmas

scout
12-25-2008, 12:19 AM
Hey Will, nice to know you. We use mostly chicken and it is mostly shallow water in the canals in the marsh. I always push my boat against the bank when I fish and I always hang a couple of crab lines off the back of the boat while fishing. The deepest water may be 6-8 feet.

I live probably about a mile from Betty's rv park. She sure gets some nice rvs at her place.

I have lived here in Abbeville my whole life and love being so close to the marsh where I fish.

I work in Lafayette and also work at our field bases in Grand Isle and in Galveston Texas from time to time.

Talk to you later, Randall Duhon.:006:

Hey Stu. That pic was taken at the game warden's canal. I am guessing it takes about 20 minutes if the Bay is not rough. If the Bay is rough you could probably double that time. If the water is high enough I go the back way and cut accross Mud Lake (little bay). I do not have to cross so much rough water that way, but the water can get pretty shallow that way.

It was really foggy Friday and I got a late start, but the weather was nice after that.

I ended up with 22 cats and 4 and a half dozen crabs. I have been catching some nice crabs lately just crabbing from my boat. They have been very full. Talk to you later, Randall.:006:

Took the day off last Tuesday and went fishing. It was a beautiful day. Ended up with about 40 cats and 2 dozen crabs. Here are some pics of my trip. The pic of the old houses in the back ground are of the old game wardens camp at the refuge where I fish. The hurricanes wiped it out. The pic of the open water is the Vermilion Bay. It is 12 miles across and I have to cross it to get to the marsh where I fish. My truck and boat are in the parking lot where I land my boat.

Great pictures! Makes me want to go home right now. I may try to fish this weekend, do an oil change and I should be golden. Will post if I go, and now that I see this it definitely makes me want to hit the water.

I know how you feel Stu. I just love the marsh and cannot wait to get back. I really would like to go this weekend but it looks like I may have to work:confused2:. Won't know for sure till later in the week. For some reason we have been having helicopters that only need work on the weekends lately lol. I spent last weekend working at Grand Isle. I really need to get back to the marsh lol.

I hope you get to go fishing soon. Talk to you later, Randall.

Here are a couple of pics from my last trips. I have been trading some of the big cats with my friends at work for deer and duck meat. It works out great for me because I do not hunt and they do not fish lol. They also like them uncleaned so they can skin them themselves. That saves me the trouble of cleaning them, it's a good thing because I haver skinned a cat before. I fillet all mine.:006:

Nice catches, and I wish my friends would want to trade catfish for duck! haha! You're throwing shrimp on the bottom? I can't wait to go out there and try, but I'm not sure when I'll be able to go. Finally on spring break and what do you know, have been sick for a week now and I get diagnosed from the doctor with mono today. :sad2: Post some pics for me as I go crazy over here, becoming a lazy bum is driving me insane. :ooooh: I'm gonna have to try to go fishing tomorrrow at least from the bank somewhere.

Hey Stu, sorry to here you are sick. My fishin seasson is coming to a end soon. As soon as it gets too hot I quit and start dreaming about the fall lol. I am glad we are still getting some cool weather. It is in the 30's this morning lol. I still have a few fishin trips to make.

I was using pogie and mullet that I had caught in my cast net. I ended up with 32 cats with the biggest going 16 pounds Friday. And the pic of the trip before that I ended up with 19, with the biggest going 24 pounds. I am getting close to 400 cats so far this season.

For the few remaining trips I have left this year, I will probably take vacation and go during the week. There are too many nuts out on the week-end now that the weather has warmed up lol. Last Friday was one of the most beautiful days. I left early and was crossing the Bay as the sun was just coming up. Man was it awesome.

I hope you get better soon and could do some fishin. Talk to you later, Randall.:006:

Here are some pics of my last fishing trip. The weather was awesome. I thought the pic of the sunrise was great. I was taking the one photo when I saw the pole was hooked up. I put the camera down as soon as I could and it ended up being a 16 pound cat.

Stu if you are reading this, I posted these pics for you to remember what home looks like lol.:006:
