Post reports and Info about SARL here
Headed out to my favorite local lake aka the cess pool....SARL.
On friday me and the lil bro managed 6 cats.
We came back sunday night after a slow mornign at irvine and immediately started nailing them. Caught 5 the first hour and ran out of mack...they LOVED it and barely nibbled the shrimp. Managed 4 more the rest of the nite. Missed a few bites and farmed a couple on the flyine. The bro lost a nice one about 2 feet from shore, he did a last minute barrell roll and was successful.
We flylined about 10 feet out near the 3 rail spot. If we had mack the whole night, im thinkn at least 20 fish.
Both sessions were the 5-11 times.
The lake isnt anything to look at, but if your into some pansize eaters and a few 5#ers as kicker fish....then its worth your time.
Bring FRESH caught mackerell.

Its always cool to catch eaters. I have not been to Sarl all season long, but have heard of people getting limits there quite a few times this season. Good going on the catch.

Thanks fellas.
Yeah, ive seen a few double digits pulled out but not often.
I just find a hole and have fun, havent had the pleasure of slaying DDs like you Blue- so this works for me.
You should head out one weekend and fill your freezer up for a while.

I will. Definitely need some good eaters to cook. Those are the best tasting cats hands down. Ran out of my Hesperia eaters.

The Macks are wide open here at the Docks. It took me 3 minutes to catch 20 for bait. I caught 40 cats at the lake Wed. night, one big channel over 30. The fresh mack soaked in a small amt of Sodium Nitrate seems to be keeping the bait very fresh.

In a few weeks this big wad of mackerel will probably go south to escape the winter. The channels bit good at canyon lake last night, I caught a darn carp that I know went close to 50. The sodium nitrate solution of 1 oz per 5 gallons of water and soak the mackerel fillets for 10 minutes seems to realy keep the stuf firm as long as I keep it cold. It seems to keep the oxygen from solidifying the amino/blood propety of the bait.
Ever hear of using fresh pineapple juice to cure mackerel? I sure would like to get some info on it.

Where are these "docks"
I cannot tell you enuff how bad i need a SOLID mack spot. I would just take an ice chest full of fresh mack for cattin if i had em....no need for the other stuff. (at least for the kittys i catch)
My last two "bait fishing" outtings to a couple piers have been SKUNKS. Bad timing...
If your willing to share any info, it would be GREATLY APPRECIATED, even a PM is good. If not, i understand too

Just re read it and it seems like a private place- that would be sweet..or even if i could find somewhere that sold em half way fresh like the other fish :cursing:

I run 22nd Street Landing in San Pedro. The Mackelel are schooling at the docks, best time is in the evening but they are here all day. If you dont know how to catch them fast I can show you how. I will let you on the docks to fish if you do not bring a group of people and you leave my sea bass alone, no hooking or harassing my little sea bass pets.

Yes I heard of the sodium nitrate solution for curing macs as well Frank. I wish could hit those macs Frank but is going out of town for a week. I will be back next week weekend though. May come thru for A sunday morn for an hour or less to get the macs. I will check in with you to see if they are still around. If you try the pineapple for the macs, let me know how that goes.

Thanks man, thats mucho generous of you.
My dad works out in san pedro at the sav on. Its still a nice lil drive for me.
I actually went out to Newport pier last night and caught about 9 lil ones and then bought a half bucket from a kid for $8.
All in all it was a good trip, im heading out tonite with the family to SARL for the 24 hour session. I seriously have enuff mack to feed an army....of catfish that is
Edited- but if i do run out ill hit ya up! and i wouldnt touch the basses :cursing:
I usually just use the sabiki rigs or a split shot and a hook if the wind permits.

Mike
use a small calcuta lift stick, 1/4 oz lead head with barbless hook, 80 pound spectra and a small piece of anchovy. Spend 4 minutes cutting up the bait, 30 seconds chumming and you should catch a fish every 9 seconds. I will show you how it is done, even loan you the gear.
My sea bass are realy thick, we feed them peas every day, about half the nuts in the harbor want to sneak in here and catch them even tho they are 2 inches to short.
Hope you catch them at SARL

The last batch of amino acid we tested was a flop, even the birds would not eat it. The sodium nitrate works well under refrigeration but solidifies and turns everything black after it gets warm. The pineapple juice thing sounds far out but so does garlic, ever hear of an Italian catfish? Maby Guava or Peaches or whatever is the key, just keep on trying for the ultimate perservative.

Ended up with 20 keepers total. Ill do a lil more detailed report later incase any local brothers head out anytime soon.
If you aint in the know on some specific spots...could be a loooong day.
Countless first timers skunked and a few overnighters carrying a stringer with 1 or 2 fish on it when it was time to go.....

Hi Frank! glad to see you posting again. I hope you are doing well. I was wondering about Railroad cayon; last time talked to you, you said BLM closed the lake down; could be I misunderstood.
Frank, are sculpin leagal to catch? are they supposed to be over 12 inches?
Hey Mike, look foward to reading in deatail about your outing at SARLS. I have ok luck, would like to know your spots if you don't mind sharing info.

So me n the lil bro decided to try our first attempt at SARL for the overnight thing.
We showed up around 615ish with a TON OF MACK, fresh mack. Headed over to our regular spot, the 3 rails. It was taken, so we set up about 20 yards to the right.
Was slow the first hour and the guys in our spot got one fish.
After about 90 minutes they packed up and left, we proceeded to take over the spot.
Brandt aka Cliffey07 and Drews from this board met up with us.
The bite wasnt wide open and the oens who were biting barely ran with it, at times they just took it a few feet and sat...couple fish i didnt know i had until i started reeling it in.
From around 7-11 in our spot, me n the bro managed 6 fish...all flylined off mack and shrimp. Brandt and is buddy took 4 fish home and left at 11.
Around midnite, the bite went wide open for a few hours. Most were hitting the mack but we did manage a couple off shrimp and one off a night crawler.
We used the normal set up, cast about 15-20 feet out and leave the bail open. The few 3 and 4#ers would grab it and just RUN, the others fiddled with it and the runs were small and slow.
There was an old man next to us and he couldnt set the hook if his life depended on it...from about midnite to 6am...we got 14 more fish and he managed one. Then the bite died again. They guy left around 7 am and we gave him a couple to take with him.
Around 8am we packed it up and moved to the docks, NOTHIN. Moved to the Net area...Nothin, then back to our spot, NOTHIN. Left around 2pm without a bite for the last 5 hours. SUCKED IN THE DAY TIME-
I wasnt pleased, but people were acting like we were stars when they seen our stringers. Offered to buy some, i gave another 5 away....no way im able to eat all those...so its cool.
When we went to clean them i noticed one of our bigger ones had came off the stringer, then another one popped off and i was sure the gill had ripped and he free'd himself. Word to the wise, dont use those crappy thin stringers with 16 pounds of fish on it. :o
Overall, it was a fun nite...i was disappointed in sunday not catchign anything at all from 8am on...but i guess thats why i always see the 24 hour guys leaving around 7 or 8 in the morning. Although, i talked to another guy who landed 11 that day....right spot, wrong time i guess. I didnt sleep a wink and now am paying for it with this 2 day migraine ive had. (please pray for me if you talk to God, it really is painful) ALso, one of the fish i landed had some sores around his mouth and a few worms coming out...obviously didnt keep him.
Our total was 33# of catfish, gave alot away at the lake and cleaned the rest.
Keybaits were Mackerell and shrimp again, had only one bite on M&M and nitro biscuits.
Farmed about 15 fish :o and lost a couple that ran like hell and snapped my 14 LB test line. These fish were actin weird and alot of times, just stopped runnin with the bait...therefor, the farming was kinda irritating at times.
Best times were from 12am to 5am- WIDE OPEN BITES.
Was very fun for our first 24 hour session, but i think the next time illbe alot more prepared and RESTED-
Most likely be heading back out this friday or saturday for a night session, Irvine still isnt hot enuff for me. Id rather catch 20 stockers than HUNT all day for a bite.
If anyone wants specifics on the spot, send me a PM. Dont mean to be paranoid, but i posted alot of reports on a nother forum and since then my spot ahs been taken everytime ive been out. Luckily they dont fish it rigth and leave an hour later.
Hope this helps someone
-Mike
PS- took some pictures of the last couple outtings...as soon as i get em scanned ill post some.

Nha man, no bad luc- just fishin, they just giot wide open hungry around 12-1230.
If my headache is Ok, ill roll. if not i have to pass. (see general section in the forum)
Tip- when macks are biting- try to buy some "Sabiki Rigs" they go from $3-5 and work like charm for bait size macks when theyre biting. You can put strips of bait on each one, or just leave em empty. I was catchin 2 one one cast the last time out.
When theyre not, u might was well jump in with a net...thats the only way youll get any ;)
O yeah, if u want any catfish to take home and eat..let me know i have a TON in the freezer.

I know very little about SARL,but doesnt the wind sort of blow straight across the lake all evening? This would make it a real pain to fly line with anything but light line??? If I ever escape from here I might consider trying an overnighter there if I could get away from all the TV and reporters following me for the last 2 weeks.

flylining the mac at sarl isnt hard at all, most the time you are catching the cats 10 to 15 of the shore, the only thing that sucks is getting it past the algae.

The wind at SARL can be a pain at times, but really doesnt affect the flylining. However, when its been real windy ive never done well.
As well as when its hot, ive never done well.
Went out this last sunday night and ended up with one catfish...things got so slow i even rigged up a small pole with a 1/4 oz carolina rig and a 2 foot leaders. put a half of a nightcrawler and started doin some bass fishin
the sad part is i actually caught about 6 or 7 baby dinks, biggest one around 7 inches...but was the only fun of the night.
had a couple runners on the flyline late around 1030 but failed to set the hook. also had a couple bites on mack casted way out with a carolina set up.
My buddy told me he did the overnight thing the night before and only caught 5 total...and he said he had to work for those ones. didnt listen went anyway.
was just a slow slow day all around...its never good when you see the same guy pass by you 3 times in 2 hours.
FYI- when theyre passiin by, theyre moving. when theyre moving, they aint catchin
O well, fishin is fishin.

Headed out to SARL this weekend on Friday 9-9 for the 5-11pm session.
Went out with pops instead of the lil bro. Got there about 530, guess everyone was broke from labor day becaus eit was EMPTY.
Bite started off slow, but quickly picked up and i landed my first on flylined mack about 630.
Then pops starts getting hit on a weighted pole but theyre just playing with it. Then his flylined pole (bail closed) goes bendo and then straigth again. Explained he needed to leave the bail open, kinda wierd teachin him since he first taught me.
He shakes it off, but leaves the bail closed again.......
I land 2,3, and 4 of the night. Was about 2 hours in and can tell hes gettin a lil frustrated. "Wanna try this spot? No, my pole is fine here!" LOL...
"leave the bail open dad. it doesnt have enuff string on it damnit" LOL
Then he finally gets bendo on the weigthed pole and lands him, skunk is gone.
The bite woudl pick up and then stop, then pick up again. Started using some hogwild dip on the mack and increased th ebite somewhat.
Pops farmed one, i farmed one too. Missed alot of bites, seems they were mouthing it and not runnin....liek theyre spose to :D
Grand total was 12, hid a couple
Ten biggest came out to 22.5 lbs on the scale, biggest around 3 pounds.
Got pops on some action and got a bunch of eaters for the freezer.
Gooood times.....

Same spot buddy, next to the whirpool in the big lake.
Flylined mack and mack n hogwild did the trick. Coulda been a lil busier but when they hit, they hit hard. About 50-50 split slow to biting on the time we were there.

Went out to SARL on Friday night for the 24 hour pass thing with "SoCal". Got there about 7 pm and set-up next to "SoCal". Got a couple of bites but nothing.
Moved to "Bubble Hole" at 11pm. Nothing. Finally moved to "Boat Dock" Cove at about 1am. Got alot of bites until about 3am. Afterwhich got bites after bites until landed first fish of the entire night. Fish was about 2-3lbs. You could hear the fish flopping on the surface feeding but not too many were biting. Alot of carp were on the surface flopping and every once and awhile you could see a big flop of a white belly, definetly a kitty.
Ended up with three kitties for the night. The bite turned completely off by sunrise.
I don't know about how "SoCal" did. I moved but he stayed in his spot all night. I would have to say this was the worst night at SARL I have ever had. :cursing: I would have to say I am going to have to redeem myself with a BIG-UN from Da 'Vine ,one of these days.
Hopefull the next report I post will be much more pleasing to the eye to read.

Yes, this was BY FAR THE WORST NIGHT AT SARL IN SARL HISTORY for me.
First, it was hot...the SA winds were bad that day and ive never done well in the heat there.
Second, they removed ALL THE ALGAE from the shorelines...and i mean there WAS A TON OF IT there before. I have no idea how they did it. There was a BRIGHT GREEN GLOW from the boat dock area...almost looked like a donkey kong sized crappie light.
Someone told me they may have "bluestoned" the lake to get rid of the algae. Whatever they did, they did it for the stupid new trout season..which starts on Wednesday and its SUPPOSE TO BE IN THE 90s all week.
Good luck trout..bring a net and catch as many floaters as you please :cursing: MORONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its going to be ROASTING.
ANyhow, i had the whole family there and like 8 poles out...so we werent moving anywhere, but it didnt matter. Countless cars passed complaining about the night, they werent anywhere. I got the only one and ended up using a couple rapalas to play with the lil bass by the 3 pipes in the lil lake. caught countless ones from 6-8" all released.
Slept for 2 hours, woke up to some pancakes and eggs...fished a couple more hours for nothin except another bass around 10" caught on mackerell on my sisters pole.
Cant beleive how focused they are on trout season already, i highly doubt the catfish were stocked last week like they said.
One cool thing, the dude Frank who sponsored the last tourney cruised by and recognized me and we chatted for a few minutes.
Called it a day and went home around 10ish...
Woke up at 5 and got to Irvine by 6pm  feinin for some fish.
Met up with Bruce from the FN and ended up another slow and CROWDED night. We did get on a WO bite around 1130 and nailed a few, but he wanted to leave because he was gettin pretty cold...he wore shorts
Still cant beat the free boat ride.
Until next time.......

The people that run SARL is really foolish to put trout in now and it only goes to tell you that they are in need of money. There will be a few that will camp out the night before just to catch a trout, but I am looking forward to seeing the die off from the water and the backlash that comes from it. One of the reasons that I have shyed away from sarl as I use to fish that lake faithfully in the past but have got tired of the hoopla sort to say. I will go there a few times for trout this season but no more than 4 times the whole season. And I save those trips for huge stockings of the loids. Not worried about the rats as I can get those close to home for cheaper at Guasti.

Its not going to be as early as last time. This time its going to be starting with the cook out at noon and also the sign ups and jackpot deposits will take place at that time. Its going to be the same as last with us chatting and eating until about 3pm and then off to fishing we go. Final weigh in will be at 1230am. If your going Jaime let me know so I can add you to the list.
Jaime I will call you later this eve about the skippies and bonita. I can scoop them up from you later this week on my way home or the weekend depending on when you get home. I leave work around 330 but I have to pick my son up from his day care provider by 6pm and with the traffic it takes me an hour and a half average to get home from L.A.

Hey Brian, my buddy brught back three bonita, from 2-3lbs apiece. My buddy caught 15 yellowtail from 20-40lbs! I believe the boat total was 300 or so yellowtail. The captain of the Searcher did not bother going to Guadalupe island for yellowfin tuna due to many Great white sharks. Instead went to Cedros Island and at times was wide opend on yellowtails.

Hey Blue,
What do you think is the best way to go? Do it during trout season or catfish season? I'm trying to plan it so the kids and family of the company have a great time.

I would suggest trout since all of the emphasis there is on trout now. They cat stockings will cease and they will focus on thr trout from now thru beginning of May.
