Ill talk to you George ... I dont bite ... lol

i havent fished the Delaware ... but my dad and my uncles used to fish for eels in a town called Equinoc ... (i think) thats how its spelled ... but that was years ago

any how ... most of the fishing I do is Pond or bank fishing ... thou i got my largest channel in a fram pond on July the 9th this year .... the one in my profile pic ....

My nephew caught one on the 26th of July but his was weird looking .... it had black spots all over it ... it looked like it rolled around in ink .... they were not mud patches .... it was actuall spots .... do you know what this might have been ... is it something we should not eat ... i skinned him out and put him in the freezer .... but i have never seen anything like it in all the years I have been fishing ... the fish was caught in a farm pond ... he seemed healthy ... by this i mean he was 6.1 lbs 25 inches long .... maybe some one out there knows what these spots were ...

thanks for the help

mike

Not bein a country boy I would have to ask the question. Does the pond have things like fertilizer and what not washin in to it. I know that up here there are consumption warnings about the fish caught in the various bodys of water.

bull_head
08-15-2005, 10:45 PM
there are no feilds that have run off into the pond George ...

I dont have a picture of the fish to show you a closer look

like i said i have never seen this before ... but he looked healthy
for all purposes .... it was kinda like he landed in a well of ink
and he had a good time wallowing around in it ... it wasnt a
couple of spots he was plastered with spots .... the meat dont
look any different than normal ... but it got me thinking what could
it be ?

I thoguht maybe that he might be picking up a color of the dirt
or gravel in the pond .... i dint ask the farmer what kind it had in
the bottom ... but this pond is regualry fished by local people and
the farmers family of course .... it just puzzled me i geuss

thanks for the help

mike

caught a nice cat tonight in a weird way. the sun was just going down and after a few hours of great smallmouth and panfish fishing i had about 10 mins to try for a catfish so i cut up a gill that i caught earlier, cats out and started waiting a few mins. there was a hatch of mayflies and i could see a bass taking them then swim around and take some more so i decided to take my chuck of gill and cast over there and jig it like a lure, i took of all the weight and let let it sink slowly then i had a tap and i went hook it and missed it so i started to reel in when this big bass came up from behind a slamed the gill but to my surprise it was a nice 5 pound catfish when i caught it close enough to see.

Haven't been doin much cattin but been doin real well with smallies.
Haven't seen a stripper in a week now,but tried trolling fer em out around Bordentown, gave it a good 2-21/2 hours with no luck.
Water temp was still in the high 70's,hopefully that hurricane will biring a cool front or 2 with it at least dump some rain to cool thew water down some.

Man thats ashame what happened to them folks out in missouri and new orleans,i feel pretty bad for them folks down there. That was a big big hurricane that tore threw there.

did you guys hear about the pollution spill up my way just north of easton? well i guess the ppl power plant had a problem and it was dumping sludge into the river! this was in the set of river that i fish in! but they have the sludge going down over 25 miles now. well in this sludge is lead, mercury, and aresnic so i would not be eating any fish or swimming in the delaware for some time now! its a shame what happened but aperently there have been no fish kills yet and i can say the same thing because while a set of people were cleaning up sludge on the beach it came from i was fishing about 15 yards away and catching a bunch of smallies. there was a big school of shad in the area and the smallies were gorging themselves where i was, when i was catching them i could see the baby shad in the mouths that there stomach was so full. i caught over 25 smallies off that beach with the biggest being about 17 inchs. the trick was using a small spinner or spoon that look like the shad and casting where the current met the slack water. bam nailed 4 nice smallies on my 1st drift on the 25 yard beach. i was in a kayack with an ultra lite so i did take a minute or 2 to land a fish so you can tell the bite was hot! im going up all weekend and trying some catfishing and more smallmouth. ill try to get a link to that story with the sludge

misterwhiskers

Do you know the name of the plant?
I'm guessing its up river from trenton.
I never caught a smallmouth until this summer and for the past month I've been hammerin them!
They're feeding on the same baitfish that are workin their way down river.Caught a bunch of small ones and a few 3 1/2 pounders that were 19-21 inches.
The river has been really clear this past week and is somethin else to see em get a run and lunge and start floppin and twistin about 3 feet out of the water!
Really hope this spill doesn't mess up the fishin none,I'm still getting stripers,my first case of smallmouth fever!,and even got a few walleye a couple months ago!
Has been a real good summer for me so far.

delawareriver
09-03-2005, 01:19 AM
yea its a ppl power plant. its about 40 miles of river north of trenton. yes this has been a very good year for all the fish! had my personal best catfish, smallmouth, carp, eel, pumpkin seed sunnie, striper, rock bass, and walleye out of there this year! great year for fishing for sure. the small baitfish coming down the river is the baby shad. cant wait ill wanna get out for some cats this weekend.

misterwhiskers
09-03-2005, 01:17 PM
I thought they were baby shad and herring also but now i ain't so sure.
They don't seem to be going no where.they are just stacked up in the same spots for about 3 weeks now.
Whatever they are i know where they are and they are holding mnay sportfish in there with em!

The water is still pretty clear down here, just a bit stained with some algae/moss floating down. Can still see about 4-5 feet deep.

delawareriver
09-03-2005, 11:56 PM
thats good. outside of the sludge main flow you cold see about 5 feet down but all u saw was a layer of sludge on the bottom. normaly in low water like we had this summer we can see 12 feet or so you can see the difference there. in the channel where it was cloudy with sludge you could se about 6 inchs, no fish kills yet and hopefully going up there tommorow.

went up yesterday, its still a mess, clean up crew been working around the clock, people taking samples, shcoking fish for tests all kinds of activity. smallmouth bite is still hot. the people collecting fish couldnt shock enough big smallmouths so i caught a nice 15 inche one for them. alot of small stripers around, a few large mouth. then at night i casted out some chicken liver caught one small cat right away then only small stripers, river chubs, and other little fish were pecking at it but i couldnt hook them then i got a decent river chub which i cut up. casted that out and a few minutes later i feel asleep, when i woke up this mourning i had one pole with a nice 10 pounder that was about 27 inchs my personal best and the other pole had a small 15 incher. dang only if i could have stayed awake and caught a few more nice ones. cut bait deffinitly works beats liver any day. gonna try to get out this weekend to. hows everyone else doing?

misterwhiskers
09-10-2005, 12:26 PM
They was down here netting them last weekend, trying to get a shad count. They do it about three times a year. They was telling me they seen big stripers upriver well over 20 inches.
gonna get out there tonight and try for some walleye and if the tide is right(which i dun think it is) some stripers.Got 2 stripers wednesday and seen 3 smallies and a walleye caught.
Haven't been out as much as i like this past week, too much going on and the price of gas has been keepin me off the water.

Well its near the end of the summer. Ain't had no rain in a good while and the salt line is pushin its way up the river. I know some of yas won't beleive this but the river and creeks are filthy with little snapper blues. LOL! The Mrs. and I have been havein some fun with them. It kinda kills the cat fishin for a while but they will be gone soon. Those little terds can flat tear a piece of cut bait off a hook faster than you can say your name. LOL! This past sunday we just could'nt escape the little toothy rats! LOL!

misterwhiskers
09-13-2005, 12:09 PM
The rivers prettyy clear up here can see a good 8-10 feet deep easily.Am hopeing for a good inch of rain from Opheila to dirty the water up some and get back to cattin.
A good inch of rain will wake them channels up!

Them lil snappers on a whole lotta fun on light tackle!

delawareriver
09-14-2005, 09:18 PM
i cant beleive how great the smallmouth action has been, normally i only target smallmouth off and on since theres normaly a limit of fish availble and those fish tend to be shy but damn, all i gotta say, kyack, ultra lite, 4 pound test and a small soft plastic bait and bamn your in some world class fishing. went up sunday afternoon got there and landed 4 fish right away all of them were 15 inchs and better with one pushing 20! that was a nice 5 pound fish and what a fight on the ultra lite. action died down besides for a few small fish. went back up at about 6 to my honey hole and i was casting along this plastic frence keeping any more fly ash polution from entering the river, but it makes some nice current and for about a 1/2 hour i was catching smallmouths every cast. had about 15 in that time then nailed a few more on thew way back down to my grand parents house. they were hitting so hard they were braking the 4 pound line easily even with the drag set low. also had a big fish strip a bunch of line then spit the hook i think by the way it ran it was a big striper proably 25 inchs or so but it also could have been a nice cat or carp. maybe ill try another night of catfishing this weekend. hope everyone is having as much luck as me wether its cats or not. o yea bow season started 2 but i havnt gotten out yet.

Well the Mrs. took me to school today. She cleaned my clock with a score of 16 to 1. OUCH! LOL! All channels with the biggest bein 5 pounds. The river is still chuck full of them dam little bait thievin snapper blues! LOL! We need some rain to drive them little turds back into the bay! LOL!

09-27-2005, 05:59 PM
She had an edge on ya with a very fragrant fish attractant!

Maybe you shoulda bring some of her perfume along with ya next time George,LOL

I bet they was all male channels too...

I picked up about a dozen channles Sunday most were 4-5 pounds and had 1 topping the scales at 7 was a nice change from striper fishing all summer. They was hittin pretty hard too!

Them snappers sound alot like the eels around here,no teeth but they can suck a hook clean.

BIG-G
09-27-2005, 06:10 PM
I sure hope ya are keepin them eels Joe. Freeze em and cut em up into 3 inch or so pieces. They will kill em! LOL!

delawareriver
09-29-2005, 09:15 PM
yea i agree the eels up here are horrible! at least this year there were some nice size eels in the river so they actualy fought alittle on the lighter poles i use.i think 2 or 3 more trips and my river fishing will be done this year. all i can say great year! landed a personal best in almost every species! had a 10 pound cat for a personal best coming in at 29 inchs, had a 19 inch smallmouth, 21 inch largemouth, 23 inch walleye (not bad for my 1st walleye), 34 inch carp, and 23 inch striper (biggest freshwater stripper ive caught) all of those were personal bests. i also had alot of fish! the only two fish i wish i could have caught more of would be the shad and i didnt catch any crappie this year but i never caught many of those anyways, to complete my full river i need a musky and a northern pike ive landed every other fish that i know of in the river, plus i caught 2 or 3 fish i couldnt identify doesnt sound that hard till you add trout, fallfish, river chubs and the other by catch fish that you dont see everyday.

misterwhiskers
10-01-2005, 12:49 PM
i tried the eel thing a few times with no success, cut and live. The livers seem to work best other than shad.Cut shad is the bait if you have it.EVen herring doesn't produce very well for me.

Hey George,
better be carefule down there.Them state police boys been following me up here.Twice in one week i got boarded and 2 yellow warning papers. LOL
Good thing they was two different officers.
Almsot got locked up wed.
I was without my fishing liscense, boat registration, and any form of ID.
He thought i was lyin about who i was but he was good enough guy to follow me to the boat ramp and check out my DL and allowed me to fax the fishing liscense.
Seems thereb was an issue about my weight when he got a description of me on the radio.

So if your out on the river be sure to have all your paperwork cause they're out there lookin!

Put me up in a hotel and i'm there!
I think all NJ participants should get a weekend stay at holiday inn,kk ok motel 6 would be just fine.

Them boys were workin hard all summer up here. They been out alot checkin people and makin their presence known.I like seein em out there ,gives me a bit of a sense of security especially at night.

Well, the big d is just under flood stage again.Drove by yesterday and the water was moving dirty and fast.Looked like the ocean in a storm.Lotta debris comin down with it too,so maybe i can go out and salvage some stuff.

Heard the bridge commission was thinking of putting motion sensors on the bridge columns for security purposes.Don't know how it will work but if they do move along with it,i think i'll be setting their sensors off night and day. LOL

My cells actin up,won't let me see the screen.I'm goin out tonight for some cats.River looks high an muddy was down there last night lookin.
Gonna go get me some adhesive and add some protection to my keel since they took the docks away.See how that works tonight.

Got me a new spincaster for that light actin rod and its been raining ever since!Only used it once at the pond down the road from me,seemed to work much better!Smooth and further casting but i need to catch fish not ragweed!

Talked to that weiner guy too,he seemed to be a nice guy but is very company minded, didn't appreciate that much but can tell by talkin with em for like 45 minutes he's a good guy!tell ya later about it.

HELLO, Is ANYBODY OUT THERE?

I know water levels are high due to all the rain but c'mon!

Needless to say all that rain put a stop to my bass/walleye fishing but was out cattin yesterday and did pretty good.Total of 9 fish with an 8 pounder toppin the scale.
Mark got 1(hehehhe) but was nice at 21 inches.
Gonna head out again in a lil bit and get back up in some creeks and coves out of the wind.

Hows everyone elase doin?

Things are rollin down this way real well. Took Butcher Mike and his grandson out this past Monday. Water is coolin down real good and the bite is on. We spent 9 hours out there one and a half tide changes. LOL! Got well over 4 dozen channels. Attached are a couple of pics. Used eel and my good old stand bye cut mackeral. Fished old structure mainly old piers and ones that have collapsed into the water. It costs ya a few rigs but its worth it. LOL! The biggest was a shade under 11 pounds.

misterwhiskers
10-17-2005, 12:46 PM
Whys that mackrel work so good for you and i can't seem to get anything off it?I'm guessing cause the salt levels higher down your way?Maybe or maybe i'm not workin it right hell i dunno still got half that box from last year in the freezer.

How ya like that rapal fish grabber?,been eyeing them in the store for the past couple months.I like the one with the scale also, can't tell if thats what you got or not in that pic.

Fishin has been awesome all summer for me and channels seem to be pretty active now too since i started going back after them now.River is still high and muddy after all the rain but don't seem to bother the kittys much.

BIG-G
10-17-2005, 01:20 PM
hey Joe. The one I use all the time is mainly for controlin the fish for a pic. It don't have a scale in it. I got a digital scale that I just hang the gripper on and knock off a half pound. Works for me. LOL! If I got a decent fish I always net em outa the water. Don't trust that lip grip for that task. Its a good tool and well worth the money. When I got mine several years ago it was close to $40. Hell now ya can get one with a scale in it for that ammount. They were over $100 when I got the one I have.

delawareriver
10-17-2005, 06:10 PM
yea the water came up real fast and was very dirty. thank god the water levels were low to begin with because we just finished my g-parents house a few weeks ago. we dont need anothe flood for a long time. they had the river in there yard but it was still about 7 foot under what it needs to be to get into the basement and a good 18 foot below what it was this spring so it was not to bad. ive been working working working and not to mention school with almost all honors classes and getting ready for wrestling season so i havnt been out, and when ive have been out i just been fishing for smallmouths with lures because i dont even have the time to get bait anymore.

I been bass fishin a ll summer LOL
Stripers and smallies with the occasional walleye

I'll be out all winter as long as the temp is above 40 and i have enough gas.Gettin back into cattin now with thecolder temps outside andall the rain we had.Pretty much shutdown the bass fishing but definitely turned on the channels.

I would have liked to been out more this week but the kids have half days and really cut into my fishin.Ah well will get out this weekend for sure.I know how ya feel,i get cabin fever rather quick and get antsy if i go more than a few days without bein on the water.

Kaleigh,I'm fishing the Trenton area on the Jersey side, from a boat.I'm fishing the Jersey side only because I'm looking for the deepest water, out of the channel I can find.I find the fish on the fish finder, put out a marker buoy and try to anchor on top of them. The cats in the winter time will school up in deep water out of the channel. The colder the water temp. the more thay school. The water temp. last Sat. was 33.5.Look for the deepest water you can find.If you are fishn from the bank and you don't know how deep the water is.Throw out a big sinker on your line and see how long it takes to hit bottom. The hole I was fishn on Wed. was 50ft. at high tide. The cat fishn will only get better as the winter goes on.

Get my work truck run into today.I was going down the st. and a lady was coming the other way.About 50yd. in front of me she started coming over on my side.I though maybe shes going in a driveway, but no.She keep coming so I got over to the right as far as I could, but a truck was parked on the side.I stoped my truck and waited,I could see here eyes she was looking right at me.She hit me on the drives side head on.Her little Honda was a mess.I was able to drive my truck home and looks like I can still use it to work.
The cop came to the house after everbody left. The cop said the lady had a seizure.
Will work on the truck on Friday then fish Sat. and Sunday.

We was getting Shad at the Power Plant this time last year.Don't count on the early run, we still have a lot of winter to go.
Haven't been fish'n for maybe 10 days. This warm weather has got me out of the mood.Still working on the boat trying to finish up the anchor project.I'll get so pics up one day, it looks good and works good too.
Order a new stereo for the boat, after I blew the old one up.200 watts C.D., AM,FM , you should heard me coming down the river now.
